EverQuest RTS Planned

This press release has the announcement from Sony Online Entertainment that a project is underway to combine the EverQuest universe with a real-time strategy game as well as plans for an EQ game for the PS2. Perhaps to be filed under the heading of turn-about being fair play (this is sort of the mirror image to Blizzard's announcement of an MMOG based on Warcraft), here is a bit from the P.R. that offers what few details on this plan that have been released:

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, today announced deals with Snowblind Studios Inc. and Rapid Eye Entertainment Inc. to create original content for the PC and console markets under the SOE label. Rapid Eye Entertainment is currently developing a real-time strategy, PC-based EverQuest game while Snowblind Studios is developing an EverQuest-based product for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Further product information will be announced at a later date.

I have a feeling #13 passed judgement on WC3 w/o ever really playing it.

That's kind of sad. WC3 is anything but boring. The single player campaign is really interesting (story wise and gameplay) and it *does* add to the genre with the "hero" characters who gain experience, levels, and hold and inventory of items.

If they added much more, then it really wouldn't be the RTS genre anymore, now would it?
