DOOM III Announced

id Software Partners With Activision on DOOM III is the press release announcing both the official title for id's new first-person shooter that went by the "new DOOM game" label since it was first unveiled nearly two years ago (story), and a renewal of their co-operation with Activision to publish and distribute the game. As always, a projected release date is not listed, but the game will be shown at E3 later this month. Here is an excerpt:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- id Software(TM) and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - news) announced today that Activision will be the worldwide licensed distributor for DOOM III(TM), the latest installment in one of the most successful franchises in PC gaming history. Built on id's revolutionary new 3D graphics engine, DOOM III draws players into the most frightening and gripping 3D gaming experience ever created. DOOM III is currently in development for the PC by id Software and will debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision's booth #1224 in the South Hall.

"DOOM III will change what people expect to see and experience in a PC game," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "We couldn't be more psyched about DOOM III, and are thrilled to debut the title at E3 with Activision. Get ready to be terrified."

"We are excited to continue our successful and long-standing relationship with id," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. "I'm sure that id fans and action gamers alike share our anticipation for the latest incarnation of DOOM, which is one of the most important franchises in PC gaming history. There is no doubt that DOOM III will be at the top of every gamer's most wanted list."

great post number 25. Indeed, instead of lowering oneself to a degree that we only discuss with simpletons stuff like "it's gonna rock" or "it will never see the light of day"two things are certain:

Doom III will be released.
It will be the next step in graphics

I would far more likely see a discussion about what direction the game might take. That interests me a lot.

I'm 98% sure that #21 was being sarcastic.

Doom and the sequel (which was more of a great add-on or special edition then a real sequel IMO) are often touted as being the greatest PC games ever created, certainly the father of the FPS genre (I consider W3D to be more like the grandfather).

It's almost safe money that Doom III is going to be groundbreaking, I'm just not sure how they're going to implement it. Is it going to be an ultrafast nonstop scare and fragfest like the first two, or are they going for a more realistic approach?

Just play one of their Demos and you'll see what i mean, it'll will flop like shit. Except EA is going to publish it, but i dont believe so.....

23. Don't think id has trouble with budget ; May 3, 2002, 13:23 Flo

Are there really some people out there who believe id Software will "implode" and "fold in the next year"??!?! can you guys imagine how much money they are making with licensing their engines???
stststststs, some people are just too stupid.
Btw: Doom III's gonna rock despite the "innovative" title.

Christmas 2002. Id hasn't made anything completely in-house since Q3 in 1999. In March 2001 they showed the first demo footage and nothing since. I have a feeling this year's quakecon will be one for the books

Oh and the LAN sessions with doom2 were soooo funny. I just hope Doom3 will have a cool MP too. Shit on Unreal 03. give us doom3 NOW!!!

C'mon guys, waaaazzzup??? Y'all know that id always delivers super quality games... and in reasonable time too. Just look at their track record. So stop whining and be patient. Waddayawant? A rush job or a quality game?

Yeah, I know, "When it's done", but what do people think? Does this come out in 2k2, or do I have to wait until 2003 for it? Or does it go a more dukenukem4everish 2004 or later time route?

#10: As your attorney I must advise you that you'll need a very fast car with no top and after that, the cocaine. And then the tape recorder, for special music, and some Acapulco shirts. This blows my weekend, because naturally I'll have to go with you -- and we'll have to arm ourselves.

Is anyone from Blue's News going to E3? I hope so.

'fraid not, that would make it difficult to keep the news going, so we'll be here updating the site throughout the days and evenings, just like last year.

I'd be happy to be the official Blues News correspondant at E3 this year. All you have to do is cover my travel and lodging expenses, and toss in a generous per diem to cover incidental expenses.

9. Scared? May 3, 2002, 10:53 Efflixi

Doom 2 (i never played the first one) was the first and ONLY game to ever truly scare me. I can only hope that id brings back everything that made the original so groundbreaking.
