DOOM III Announced

id Software Partners With Activision on DOOM III is the press release announcing both the official title for id's new first-person shooter that went by the "new DOOM game" label since it was first unveiled nearly two years ago (story), and a renewal of their co-operation with Activision to publish and distribute the game. As always, a projected release date is not listed, but the game will be shown at E3 later this month. Here is an excerpt:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- id Software(TM) and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - news) announced today that Activision will be the worldwide licensed distributor for DOOM III(TM), the latest installment in one of the most successful franchises in PC gaming history. Built on id's revolutionary new 3D graphics engine, DOOM III draws players into the most frightening and gripping 3D gaming experience ever created. DOOM III is currently in development for the PC by id Software and will debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision's booth #1224 in the South Hall.

"DOOM III will change what people expect to see and experience in a PC game," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "We couldn't be more psyched about DOOM III, and are thrilled to debut the title at E3 with Activision. Get ready to be terrified."

"We are excited to continue our successful and long-standing relationship with id," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. "I'm sure that id fans and action gamers alike share our anticipation for the latest incarnation of DOOM, which is one of the most important franchises in PC gaming history. There is no doubt that DOOM III will be at the top of every gamer's most wanted list."

Well that's your opinion on what there is to life. I could go on and on with how much I disagree with your vision of a prosperous life, but that's just my opininon.

Some of you guys are too damned pessimistic. Have you been that scarred by your gaming experience? I also love the get a life comments,(what exactly is getting a life, they are alive arnt they?) these people make themselves feel better about thier supposed "lives" by telling others thier loosers for being excited about Doom3, yet here they are placing comments about the same thing. Just keep telling yourlself you are superior, it makes it all better.

As for the game Ill remain optimistic and pass judgement after Ive seen more.

Yesterday, Fri May 4, I went to Rutgersfest, a concert held annually on the fields of the New Brunswick, NJ campus of Rutgers University. Man, you had to see the college girls there! Literally hundreds of 18-22 y/o ripe and delicious college coeds, of all different nationalities and fashion styles, wearing the skimpiest clothing imaginable (just to draw attention to themselves) getting wild after drinking heavily, grinding against ANYONE nearby. What a beautiful sight - a pervert's dream come true. I just had to share that to remind people that there's more to life than arguing incessantly over UT vs Q3 vs DNF.

Considering that Doom is the original horror action game, I'm inclined to agree, in that it will be much slower paced, and more sophisticated than Romero's "LET'S TOSS MORE NME'Z AT EM!" style.
The thing Doom had was atmosphere, and with newer technology (especially the kind they're using), that's much more now than "pop up a cyberdemon". And the style of Doom just wouldn't work in Doom 3.

id didn't make RtCW. They produced it. Gray matter made the single player part of RtCW.

id hasn't actually made a single player game in nearly a decade.

Doom was released before the term "level design" existed. It added atmosphere.
Quake was released before "good storyline" was even fathomable in an action game. It added 3d.

The precedents that Doom 3 has to follow will be evident in the new title. John Carmack is one of the most intelligent people in the industry (as id is possibly the longest lasting big-name development company in the business). Doom and Quake didn't lack anything that actually existed yet, and SET precedents.
This id's FIRST in-house single player game since Half Life's story form revolutionized the genre. There is no logical comparison for id's storytelling abilities, as they've never made, nor ever had to make, a game with an epic story. Now they do. There's really nothing for Doom 3 to actually follow, as it's predecessor was so simple. As long as there's guns and monsters, voila, it follows up on Doom.

Why did Doom and Quake do well? Because they took what was there and took it further. id's single player games tend to do that.

Will DOOM III run on its Own new engine or will it run on an existing one (Q3 or UW)?

Oh man, you're right about the 3D Pong. Talk about addictive. I used to play that all the time, my goal was to play the perfect game, no misses. Twice I've missed only on the last freakin' ball and both were complete chokes on my part. I might have to start playing again, if I finally do it I'll send you a screenshot.

Now getting back to the subject at hand... the reason I liked UT over Q3 when they came out was:

1. Capture the Flag - it's what I play and UT was built for it right out of the box. Q3 focused much more on deathmatch.

2. Speed - I had a Voodoo3 at the time and UT worked great with it. For Q3 I had to turn everything down to make it run smooth.

3. UT came out first - I played it since the demo, got pretty good, and simply stuck with it. I had reached a level of competence with Q2CTF and for whatever reason UT suited my style of play so I got better at it than I had ever been with any other shooter - and I liked that.

That being said, I'm still a huge fan of Q3 and will buy Doom3 the minute it comes out even though I don't really like single player games all that much.

Doom 3 will be cool. But its just another FPS. Other then some new graphic tricks it will be the same old shit and you loosers are peeing your pants about it. Grow up and get a life suckers.

77. Doom meets Resident Evil? May 4, 2002, 12:57 anon@64.229

Based on what we've seen and I've read here, I hypothesize that DOOM III is going to be a slower FPS designed to scare the living crap out of us.

This is not going to be the original Doom, the industry has evolved significantly over the years, and I'm confident ID has been observing keenly. I'd be shocked if we didn't see upgraded elements of other keystone FPSs like Half-Life rounding out an otherwise linear franchise.

Since they are focusing on single player (I'm not sure, but I thought I heard that they were now including multi) they can afford to spend extra resources on story development and level design, giving us a higher state of immersion.

Personally I don't know what I'm more excited about, the game itself or the engine powering it.

Id rules.
Its the best FPS developer out there. It always was
and it always will be. There is not a single person
in the world who hasnt heard about DOOM. Quake isnt far behind on that chart either. I for one cant remember who
developed UT, nor do I want to, dont get me wrong the game
is on par with Q3A, but therse somethin missin there. Thats
been the case with every single FPS that hasnt come from ID.
They all miss that unique atmosphere, its hard to describe
but I think anyone who's serious about FPS's knows what I
mean. I dont wanna get too hyped up about DOOM3 though itll
still take a looong time for it to come out and I dont wanna
lose sleep over it. But when its done, its gonna show that
once again id has no competition.

Well, I might be obliged to agree with your post....but...considering your defending a developer that hasn't released a serious game in 4 to 5 years I think you need to jump on another band wagon

Lol. Your Joking right? Ive been playing computer games since the Commodore 64 . It's like this. All ID games were awesome. But when it came down to UT or Q3, UT was just more fun.
It has nothing to do with being any kind of 'fanboy' or having a lack of gaming experience, of which I have more than alot in this room. I personnally liked the feel, the weapons and variety of UT better.
Hell ya I can't wait for DOOM! That game is just going to rock! Hands down. This is going to be the game that you upgrade for, turn off all the lights and pump up the volume. And thing of all the games utilizing that F'ing engine. OH YEA!!!!
I'm also looking forward to UT2003 and Ureal 2! Thos are going to be some kick ass titles as well. Damn, so many sweet games coming out.

UT is cool, but I like Q3 more since it has a more mature touch to it. UT feels like a plain shootem up game.

I was one of those who waited my ass of to get quake1 when it came out , ever since i read an issue of pcgamer with those DOOM VS Quake pics WoW that was chilling. Ive still got the mag somewhere it has Mortal Kombat 3 on the frontpage and up in the far right corner it say with tiny letters; "QUAKE" first look (or something to that effect) Kind of ironic now i guess giving MK3 that much more space.

Anyway I've always been a Doom/quake/id fan I did play a bit of Duke3d And of course Half-Life turned everything around, When it comes down to unreal though I did buy the game (unreal 1 , Not UT) almost the day it came out, but i cant say i liked it much, I mean the graphics where cool at the time , but well it just didn't convince me. Since then I've been sticking with the "Quake Rules, unreal sucks ass" sort of attitude, I did try UT a few times, but i thought the weapons were silly and stuff.. Then about two weeks ago, I saw UT fore sale for like 10$ or so (99 Norwegian kroner) so i figure I'd give it a chance, after all it is piece of game history. And I Have to admit it UT is A superb Game WOW it was COOL!, Come on Quake-only fans Give this game a chance, it definatly deserves it. the BOT campaign in UT is just MUCH BETTER than Q3's For real! , anyway they are both/all good games and worth a try in any case.

I'm looking very much forward to the new DOOM, oh, DOOM III , sorry . UT3002? Hmm, this game looks ALOT like UT with more polygons, and I'm not sure if that will be TheNextBigThing for me , and Duke 4ever, Year right ,By the time that game comes out all drugs will be legal, hell will have gone through 2 ice ages and I will be preserved in a head jar. And im only saying that because I'm optimistic

Well, after reading most of these posts all I can say is that there are some sad peeps out there. just kidding!

I own almost all of id's and id licensed games. I own Unreal, UT, UT game of the year and the Expansion pack too.

My point :o) Unreal was an excelent single player game. UT was a good multiplayer game. Quake, well Quake just rules the universe

RtCW.. now that was cooooooooooooool! everthing I was hoping for.

They are all great games.. and yes we have our favourites. Should we be slandering other games because they are "Good" but we can't say they are. That would be changing codes... Quake to UT so to speak.

Lets face it. These people give us hours and hours of entertainment.. give them all the credit they deserve.

Let me post a question

What game did you most want to get your hands on?, what game was it that stopped you from sleeping.. watching the hours go by..waiting for it's release? Mine was Quake1

Yep I am from the old school.

I first read about Quake 1 in a QA setup with John Romero at the back of the Doom Stratergy guide

I phoned every PC company I could think of at the time.. No one knew about it :o( this went on for months.. When Quake finally arrived, my system was too slow :o) 486 DX266 I think it was

Well I upgraded to a Pentium 166 the very next day

And so it goes on with each new 3d Egine.

I thought that there would be no other game ever to take that effect on me ever again, but noooooooooo.

I admit, I can't wait to get UT2003. It looks sooo coool. But the game that is driving me Spare is Doom III. Ever since the G3 Video with Mac..... (Feb last year I think it was)..
It has been driving me Bonkers

So what I am trying to say is..Yes we all have our tastes..lets stop trying to impose them on everyone else

Hey..Post your all time favourite top 5 games

Mine are:

1.Quake III Arena
2.Doom (I and II) not far behind I might add
3.Quake 1
4.Unreal
5.Prince of Persia II
