More on the WTC Disaster (Updated)

Of course this is not game related (we do not expect to be doing any further game coverage today), but with the legit news sites being almost impossible to access at times today, we've been getting loads of requests for more information about what's been going on. Here is the latest as of about 9:00 PM EDT:

  • President Bush addressed the nation 8:30 PM EDT. Here's a wire report: WASHINGTON (AP) - A grim-faced President Bush condemned ghastly attacks in Washington and New York on Tuesday and vowed to "find those responsible and bring them to justice." In the second Oval Office address of his presidency, Bush said the United States would retaliate against ``those behind these evil acts,'' and any country that harbors them.

To recap:

  • In two separate attacks, hijacked planes struck both main towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan this morning, and both of the "twin towers" subsequently collapsed.
  • A hijacked plane struck the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and part of it has collapsed as well.
  • A hijacked plane crashed in western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Reports indicate the hijackers planned to crash this plane into Camp David in Maryland.
  • 47 Story WTC building seven, one of the five (relatively) smaller buildings in the World Trade Center also later collapsed from ancillary damage.
  • The White House, the Pentagon, and the Capitol Building were all evacuated, all domestic flights in the US have been grounded through at least noon tomorrow.
  • Other closings include most federal offices, the stock markets, the Disney theme parks, and the cancellation of today's Major League Baseball schedule. The President's speech announced that all federal agencies will be open for business tomorrow.
  • Broadcasts out of Afghanistan showed evidence of missile attacks and antiaircraft fire, but what connection this has to today's apparent terrorist attacks in the US is not clear at this point. The US has denied involvement in these attacks.
  • In the first hints of any sort at the scope of casualties, the New York City Fire Department has estimated that as many as half of the 400 firefighters dispatched to the scene are missing. CNN has said that 78 Police officers are missing. Also, the death toll from those on the four hijacked planes has been placed at 266. The number of dead and injured at the Pentagon has been widely reported as about 100. No estimates of the number of victims from the World Trade Center have been made.
  • People throughout the United States have are being urged to donate blood to help offset significant shortages in New York and Washington. The American Red Cross in Greater New York or the American Red Cross are places to contact about donating blood or money, or both.
  • Some news sites seem to be back online. Here are some links that have been more reliable: CNN.com; CNET.com; Yahoo; The New York Times; washingtonpost.com; usnews.com; ABCNEWS.com; FOXNews.com; MSNBC; and BBC News Online.

All of our thoughts go out to the victims of these attacks and their families and friends in what must be an incredibly difficult time.

I'm in the DC area. I arrived at work around 9AM Eastern and told to evacuate around 9:30AM. We actually passed the still smoking Pentagon on our way home (which took four hours due to road blocks, immense traffic, etc; normally takes under one hour.)

Hmph. Give me a railgun (I suppose a sniper rifle will do) and I'll help deal with the terrorists. =)

I just saw two congressmen being interviewed on CNN. They agreed we are too lax on terrorism and demand changes now. Don't think down the road we on the internet won't be affected. I forsee a lot more domestic spying in name of anti-terrorism. With the people up in arms, anything might be passed in the near future under the guise of protection. I would rather see the military & overseas intelligence beefed up. Remember too, under the Clinton (I'm not blaming him) administration, we have ceased to operate our military to cover two fronts (east & west). My heart goes out to the victims today, but worry we all might be victims somewhat down the road.

I apologize if my logic was somewhat fuzzy.

I apologize if I made you apologize, I just don't want to see the US not helping Israel in the time to come.

shul tries (helplessly) to keep calm in this mad mad world

Do you really think Usama Bin-Laden bombard the US Navy boat because of the Israelies?
No, I believe Bin Laden makes planes crash in the US because he's an insane man, and it may have nothing to do with the palestinian/israeli-issue.

I apologize if my logic was somewhat fuzzy.

Yes, but not mindlessly. It is worse than worthless if the wrong people are punished. It would be the ultimate shame if the US does exactly what these terrorists want us to do.

Missle sheild? Still can't hit a real target. Look into just how accurate those patriots REALLY were.

And to think all of this might have been avoided if only airliners were required to have secure, bullet-proof doors leading to the cockpits. <sigh>

Forethought has always been in short supply...

108. I guess the WTC was built with GeoMod Sep 11, 2001, 13:13 anon@64.209

Oh, ok. So that was uncalled for...just trying to bring some levity to the situation.

I too live in NYC & I'm stuck on 19th Street. As I live in Brooklyn, I have no idea how I'm going to get home.

My heart & prayers to anyone who was in the building when that happened. My fiancee works 5 blocks away & was evacuated shortly after the 2nd building collapsed. I'm relieved to know she's home safe.

Until then, I'll play Q3A here at the office until some of the crowd lets up.

It's all about power. If someone will bent to the terrorists they will know that the US can be manouvered and trust me.. you don't want that to happen.

shul knows this is a very sad day

Palistinians kills jewish civilians..jews kills terroist...US helps Jews .....Terroist bomb US Civilians....
More like palestinian terrorists kill jews -> jews kill palestinians -> us helps jews -> terrorists bomb US

Note than Osama bin Laden is no palestinian, he's saudi-arabian.

then the Rage will begin, and the mosque's will burn for weeks and they too shall count the their dead.
this is what I fear will happen. If every American thinks like this, the world is in for a lot of pain.

a counter attack is probably what the terrorist want. this was not a wake up call like the ira used to do them. (plant the bomb, call police, let everbody leave, blow it so it makes the news.)

this was a decleration of war.

i feel deeply shocked and dont know what to say.

Hi,

I live in New York (27th St).

At the moment I'm in the Bronx (where I work). You can see the WTC from here, and I saw the damage and the collapse this morning.

My wife is in the house. I don't know how I'll get home.

It's comforting to know that the community is out there.

Man, I just managed to hit all of your wrong buttons. Ah well, it's one of those days, sorry.

apology accepted, and you're a lot more reasonable than most; i just hope people stop and think and qualify before they act. not every arab hates westeners and is out there cheering in the streets. some of them feel as numb and sick as you or i do right now.

like you say. it's one of those days. i just hope this doesn't end up being one of those weeks.

suggestion for blue:

take 'all the carnage that is fit to post' off. At least for a little while. Doesnt seem in good taste to have that at the top of the screen while reading about this.
