Out of the Blue

G'day, eh? And happy Canada Day to all of you who celebrate, which may not be all, as a little poking around on the subject brought me to the Give us back our Dominion Day page, which points out the change of the holiday's name from Dominion Day to Canada day was not technically legal, nor do they seem to feel it has the proper aesthetics, going on to say: "As the national daily the Globe and Mail has said in it's editorials on the subject, 'So was born Canada Day, a name of such happy-face banality that only a bureaucrat could love it'. This would be like the United States choosing to begin celebrating United States Day instead of (Independence) Day on the 4th of July." So whether you are celebrating, protesting, or both, enjoy... and watch out for stray fireworks.

I'm a big Jack Lemmon fan, but I deliberately skipped mentioning his passing the other day because so many celebs have gone in such a short period that it was getting like the obituary of the day around here. Unfortunately, I didn't mention this to loony, so he commented on it the next day. Anyway, I figured I'd point this out, so that the next time someone like Chet Atkins passes away (yes, the legendary guitarist died yesterday-thanks theAntiELVIS), if it wasn't mentioned here, it isn't out of lack of respect, but rather an effort to break a pattern that was getting to the point that any obits we skipped would actually seem like we missed them.

Link of the Day: Cooties in my mailbox! Animated Cacodemons and Muzak midi Monster Mash. Pass the crack-pipe, please. Thanks Matthew Godlaski.
Story of the Day: MI5 records reveal gerbil spycatcher plan (BBC). Thanks jfp51.
Weird Science: Missing Radioactive Camera Poses Lethal Threat (thanks David Hall). You have to love that a camera with iridium-192 in it was left in a truck. These people are as careless as the US government.
Wild Science: Scientist Says Mind Continues After Brain Dies (Reuters). Thanks [MP] Wolverine [MP]. Possibly a glimpse at the after life. Or perhaps just an explanation for some Hollywood movie scripts.

You gotta admit the 2 1/2 year old boy who almost died was interesting... I agree it's not science, but it's interesting.

Because whomever did that "study" sure ain't practicing science. It hasn't been accepted to any journals, and its just silly. Keep your religion out of your science, and your science out of your religion, it cheapens both when they get mixed.

Typical knee jerk reaction. This isn't 15th Century Rome, and the scientists here aren't looking for evidence to prove something. So what if the hypothesis is a bit out there? Science is open minded, whether you agree with it our not, and let the evidence speak for itself, not your prejudices.

That reminds me of one of Jack Handy's deep thoughts.

If you're operating on a patient who dies, and their spirit is floating around above their body, place a $100 bill in their hand to try to lure the spirit back into the body, but be sure to take the $100 bill away when they come back. Either that, or place the patients hand on the breast of a nurse, yeah that would work.

Hi,
just wanted to tell you all that 'q' is a container that can be used for quoting things (because the postings in this OotB are filled with all sorts of strange quoting methods.. so you can use the 'q' if you want),

About the obituary problem.. well, Blue, sometime great people dies. I don't think we can do anything about that. "the goner of the day" got me dipressed too, but I reccon it will end sometimes soon... on the other hand, maybe you should stop it... donno...

I bet one of those crazy scientists from the Black Mesa complex stole the iridium-192 to power their flux capacitor or something.

"When you damage the brain or lose some of the aspects of mind or personality, that doesn't necessarily mean the mind is being produced by the brain. All it shows is that the apparatus is damaged,"

The mind is produced by and is part of the magic 'ether'. These guys are wasting their time, everyone knows this already. I mean, it's 350 B.C. right?

That link is neither 'wild', nor 'science'.

Most aren't. I was an industrial radiorapher's assistant for almost 2 years. Just be thankful that it wasn't a high intensity cobolt camera. Those can be dangerous even in the protective housings. Also it is common practice to leave it in a lead lined lock-box in the truck when sleeping at a hotel, eating at a restaurant etc. after a job out of town. Trust me, the trucks we had, nobody'd want to steal them...

Hey Blue, before you make something LOTD, make sure it isn't offensive.

And I don't mean morally <G>. SendAFriend is a big PITA, with pop-ups and exit pop-ups. Please don't make junk like that LOTD
