XCOM 2 Troubleshooting

There's a Basic Tech Troubleshooting FAQ on the 2K Games website with tips on getting better performance from XCOM 2, the recently released strategy sequel. They cover workarounds for some of the issues people are encountering, and say they are also working on fixes on their end. Word is: "We want everyone to have the best experience possible, and will continue supporting the title with upcoming patches." Thanks VG247.

I had the most awesome sequence just now. Standard mission, I forward my ranger, and he unlocks 2 groups of 3 aliens each, at 12 and 9 o clock, and 2 more turrets at like 7 o clock.

My colonel sniper activates Serial, which refunds all your action points if you kill something with your sniper rifle. He takes 3 shots at 3 of the exposed aliens, and kills all 3. This empties his sniper rifle, which he reloads with a free reload from an item, then I put him on Kill Zone, which is a cone in which everything that moves gets an overwatch shot.

Which kills the other 3 aliens. :-wheeee-:

6 kills in one turn by one character, not using explosives. That's gotta be a record!

I bet that was insanely satisfying! I've been trying to set up that exact scenario without success haha best I've gotten is a 3 and out with Serial and the speed reload thing

Normally, it will sit there for 30-45 seconds showing the stats and the crew before it pops continue.

Oh, okay, I thought they meant that you needed to have Caps Lock ON during the load screens. I'll try again tonight. Thanks for the tip!

(that loading screen is the frikking worst. The entire GAME loads in like 15 seconds for me, but the returning from mission load screen takes 40 seconds? WTF Firaxis?)

Had one CTD and one hard freeze yesterday on my brand new Zotac Steam machine (Win10). Seems to be a problem of the game, though. Other games ran just fine.

I'm honestly not sure what people are talking about. I tried it, and the loading times are exactly as long as they were before (ie, insanely long.)

The only thing it seems to do (I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like it is) is that it's auto-interrupting some of the small cutscenes and advancing you that way. (so it interrupts the cutscenes of the avenger flying over, and your squad rappelling down.)

I have no idea why -- that's something 2k would need to answer -- but it DEFINITELY speeds up load times.

As far as I can tell, so long as you have:

1 - loaded the avenger at least once and,
2 - loaded a mission once

Every time you return from a mission to the avenger for the duration of your session, pressing CAPS LOCK during the load sequence in the drop ship, it'll pause for 1-2 seconds and then immediately trigger the continue button.

Normally, it will sit there for 30-45 seconds showing the stats and the crew before it pops continue.

Pretty weird shit. Saw it on reddit, tried it, and about died when it fucking worked

And yes, dialing AA to FXAA and reducing or turning off ambient occlusion makes an incredible difference in all the rigs I've seen.

I got a pretty big boost setting "Maximum pre-rendered frames" to 1 in the nvidia control panel too. Smoothed out a ton of chopiness.

So, I have a strange issue happening now that I am on my 12th mission.

The game goes through the loading cutscene of the meat puppets in the delivery can and allows me to hit the mission start button fairly quickly. Then it shows the cutscene where the meat puppets drop down the rope and loads the world...and then pauses. From anywhere between 3-7 minutes. Just pauses. Disk (SSD) isn't especially busy.

I'm using the leadership, SMG, disable mission timer, and slower Avatar mods. Disabling them all and starting a new game exhibits the same behavior.

Anyone else seeing that?

I have pauses from time to time (and the game actually just crashed on me for the first time), but nothing that long...

The main problem I have with the XCOM 2 performance is that even while framerate is wildly dipping, my video card's fan is still at idle speed - it doesn't seem to be using the full capability of the card. Hopefully a patch or some new drivers will fix this.

My performance was pretty terrible until I switched from MSAA down to FXAA. Slight dip in quality, but INSANE performance increase.

You're asking your card to render 50% (for MSAA 2x) less, so that seems fairly logical.

Also, hitting capslock while in the sky ranger to speed up load times is hilarious -- AND it works.

I need to try that. The load times are very annoying. There's no reason it should take 40 seconds to load something from a 500MB/s SSD...

I'm sure it can be improved, but the FPS in a turn based strategy game is largely irrelevant. I suspect this factored in the settings their Autodetect selects.
I'm not giving them a pass, but the frame rate issues and hitching in this game actually doesn't affect my ability to play it well, while in an FPS it would cripple it.

And yes, dialing AA to FXAA and reducing or turning off ambient occlusion makes an incredible difference in all the rigs I've seen.

Excellent. By the time I get around to actually having the free time required to play this, it'll have dropped in price and be patched up enough to run well on my old desktop. Mwahaha!

I keep meaning to get to that. I kicked in money for it...I played some of it very early on and was really happy with the direction it was going...and than I got sidetracked and decided to wait for it to be "content final" before I would play again. It's basically there now and I have managed to get neck deep in a backlog over the holidays. Again. First world gamer problems. *sigh*

I only get framerate issues during the load screens showing the dropship. All other times it runs just fine. I've got most settings at max, but I have turned off Depth of Field and think I have shadows set to one below max. 970.
