XCOM 2 Invades

2K Games announces the release of XCOM 2 for Windows, OS X, and Linux, the highly anticipated sequel to the UFO infested strategy reboot. A launch trailer comes with the announcement, which offers all the details:
2K and Firaxis Games announced today that XCOM® 2, the sequel to the Game of the Year* award-winning strategy title, is now available worldwide for Windows-based PC, as well as Mac and Linux via Feral Interactive. XCOM 2 already has critics raving with IGN awarding it a 9.3 out of 10 and saying, “XCOM 2 is an amazing game”, along with PC Gamer writing, “We’ll play this forever,” and awarding it a 94% out of 100%. Game Informer Magazine also wrote that XCOM 2 is “one of the deepest and most rewarding strategy games on the market” and awarded it a 9.5 out of 10.

“Firaxis is taking the XCOM franchise to a whole new level with XCOM 2’s epic story and replayability factor, making it the most thrilling game in the series,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “XCOM 2 is a worthy successor to the award-winning XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and is already receiving outstanding reviews from critics.”

In XCOM 2, humanity lost the war against the alien threat that has established a new world order on Earth. XCOM, formerly a secret paramilitary organization, is largely forgotten and must strike back from the shadows to reclaim Earth from the aliens’ rule and free mankind from their evil plans.

“The XCOM 2 team strived to create a sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown that gamers would love and want play over and over again,” said Jake Solomon, creative director of XCOM 2 at Firaxis Games. “Adding in features that set it apart from previous XCOM games was important to us, like a unique new narrative, more varied and powerful aliens, procedurally-generated levels and modding support. The team is hugely appreciative and humbled by the positive response so far, and we hope that strategy and sci-fi fans will enjoy the game as much as we enjoyed making it.”

I've just modded all the values myself. It's pretty easy to find all the interesting stuff in the .ini files, as all options are very specifically named. I think I found everything I wanted in like 30 minutes or so.

Wheeeee

Feel free to post a list! Don't plan to get it right away, but I'd like to know what mods to look out for.

Thanks!

"could" meaning others could, but not me. My first campaign (non-iron man) took me 40 hours with plenty of save scumming and overwatching every turn after moving a few squares. I'm still assuming XCOM 2 is artificially shorter with the urgency of the countdoom doom clock thing.

The doom clock can be very effectively held back from what I experienced so far... 16 hours in it's at 4 bars... you can focus down the end-goal but it doesn't seem very smart to do that, since you can not do research while you do that. So you have to balance that vs research vs missions and vs squad health. Gravely wounded soldiers are around 2 to 4 weeks out. And this hampers your ability severly, higher ranked soldiers are extremely powerful (though I think you could win every mission with a rookie squad (that has full tech armor and plasma) too, you just need to savescum a ton)

Im playing "semi-iron man" mode for my first play through. I only load when I seriously mess up and am in danger of failing a mission. Wounded soldiers and even an occasional soldier loss Im fine with, I do a lot of rotations so that I can man at least two full squads at all times.

You will reconsider that stance on the Avenger Defense mission 37+ kills.. 6 injured ^^ The hardest mission in the game

So yeah, I beat the game btw, 28 hours on Veteran. The end fight was.. let's just say, special. Too bad there is so little real story.. it would be nice to learn a bit more about the actual aliens.

its just *ok* ... having been spoilt by JA2 back in the day - its really ruined me for TBS in general.. Silent Storm was pretty good, if fairly wonky

but this is more like a simple boardgame than anything else... 2 actions - if you shoot first you cant even move later.. i mean, come on dude

no aimed shots is lame, no prone/crouch/sneak is lame.. lame lame lame

its ok, but all this talk about "BEST THING EVER OMG!! FUCK ME THIS IS HEAVEN!! OOOH AAHHH EEEEH!!" .. just fuck off with it

I really don't like how harried everything is on the geomap. Everything takes 5-7 days to scan, and every five hours you get a notification about something else, and more missions, and the resistance council whining at you, etc etc etc. You never get the chance to do anything.

And then the Doomsday clock. It advances by one point every week, and I finally go do a mission to reset it, and it takes one point off the clock? ONE FUCKING POINT????

Ugh.

Time to mod.

90? I have 85... when flanking... standing NEXT TO an enemy... I got my ass kicked on the second fricken mission like four times. Didn't help I had two squaddies on 20-day DL after the FIRST mission and was rolling with a pack of rookies, but still. Commander difficulty is kicking me in the pants.

The worst thing yet was when Advent dropship came in... and I had everyone surrounding the drop point on overwatch... and not a single person hits anything. Are you KIDDING?

Like you, this is my reason for extreme agitation too (plus the fact that the game doesn't seem to give me a moment of rest where I can just do some missions and kill aliens without all the pressure).

I wonder how this is different from XCOM1. Somehow, it is.

Btw, if any of you are running into a "one or more components cannot be found. Please reinstall the application" error when trying to run the mod tools, follow these instructions: (Courtesy of nickkeane in this thread )

You need to install Visual Studio Isolated Shell 2013. When the SDK is installed, it fails to execute the included installer. There's also installation documentation in the XCOM 2 SDK folder in Steam that gives you steps to set up a basic mod. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=40764

There should also be a shell installer in the XCOM 2 SDK folder at Binaries\Redist\vs_isoshell.exe if you want to use that, or you can use the above download. Running UE3Redist.exe is probably also important if you don't have Unreal Engine 3 SDK installed.

Once you can get the VS 2013 shell launched, you need to go to "Tools - Options - XCOM 2" and point Install directory to the XComGame folder in your XCOM 2 (the actual game's) installation's location in Steam commons, and the User directory should point to the XComGame folder in the XCOM 2 Development Tools (XCOM 2 SDK) install directory.

I ran both installers, and the Modbuddy fired right up after that. Of course, I have no idea what the hell to do in it, but eh.

Exactly this. I miss so crazy often.. and enemies hit me even in full cover what feels like almost all the time. Personally I'm really annoyed there isn't a way to just restart an entire level. Some saves can be really nasty.

Wow, somehow the game is way less forgiving for some reason. Also, after playing for 6 hours the game hadn't managed to get me settled in. It keeps hitting me with new shit I should focus on.

First six hours are a mix of joy and agitation.
