Oculus Rift $599

Oculus Rift preorders are now underway on the Oculus website, finally revealing pricing for consumer versions of the VR headsets, which will be $599.00, though as previously announced, credit cards will not be charged until these are shipped. Word is these will ship in March, and the bundle includes a wireless Xbox One controller along with the headset. There is some backlash over the price of the units, so it will be interesting to see how that impacts orders.

Ridiculous price for a dumb thing. Knock on my door once all games support it by default and it's not just a lame headpiece but an entire body piece, with some sort of treadmill tech included.

This is just so meh, so overhyped. Imo.

Tell me you've played it, like the DK2 or something, because seriously, anyone can call something overhyped they've had absolutely no exposure to.

Coming from someone who has sunk hundreds of hours into titles like Euro Truck Sim 2, Assetto Corsa, Project Cars and Elite Dangerous with a DK2 on my head, it was a no-brainer. Expensive, granted, but sure, I'm in. I could never play a game in which I'm in a cockpit again without it being in VR.

To those that haven't, think things like triple-screen monitors and trackIR get you there? No. It's not even *close*.

Valve support.

LOL! Do you mean like the downtimes of Steam without explanation except weeks aferwards? Or the games on Steam that don't run in the version sold? Or the quick deliverance of games like HL3? Of course Valve will probably sell cool hats for VR at double the price they do right now, because you know, you see them on two different eyepieces...

It'll likely be half the cost.

I'm thinking it will be a bit more. It has some additional features over the Rift and Valve is a PC only focused company. We'll need some hands on reviews to get the finer display details etc on how it all works out. Also if a gamepad is to be used, the Valve Pad to me is more programmable and usable in more situations than an xbox controller. Steam link and pad are quality products, those esp. link are priced to sell.

They priced it right I have to be honest and say. If people will pay $600 and they are ordering faster than they can make them, they didn't under price it. Once this wave of buyer is done, the product will start to come down and there will be revisions to those that we'll want.

I have no doubt that plenty of trust fund kids, one-percenters, and game whales will will jump on this, gladly putting up with the downsides of buying a first generation product, however I doubt game publishers will be willing to code in the support unless they add a premium to the game versions with it.

They do have some cool features, their touch controllers look very nice and having that camera means you won't have to take off the headset to see things around you. Room space VR experience could make for some interesting games too.

I suspect it'll be more expensive than the Rift by quite a bit, the "lighthouse" sensors and the touch controllers. Neither HTC nor Oculus have the luxury of discounting the razor and recouping their loss by selling blades. Neither company is going to require royalties for developing games / content for it - as far as I know.

Do you really believe that? You think there's that much margin for HTC to undercut Oculus while matching or surpassing features/specs?

When they were talking about a $400 ballpark Oculus, HTC was already basically saying Vive would be "slightly more expensive" than the Rift. So while they may be able to price cheaper, "half" or even close to half, is probably out of the question.

I'm expecting them to undercut them by at least 30% if not a bit more. That's the smart business decision even if it costs them money in the short term, not only are they going to capitalize on the demand for the product, but capitalize on it being cheaper while doing the same job. There's also a chance I could be wrong, if I am no big deal.

I had almost forgotten about the VR pr0n factor... I had been predicting a significant up-shoot in guys getting caught at the computer with their pants around their ankles, with their ability to detect someone getting home and entering the room being diminished with the headset on, -but at this price-point it won't be quite so dramatic, with far fewer teens and college kids able to get one...

its well underway already... you heard of this shit?

As of Thursday, the porn site became way more ambitious as evidenced by the Virtual Reality device attached to a robotic twerking butt it unleashed — starting at the modest price point of $499, currently marked down from the original retail price of $699. That sounds like a lot to spend on a glorified Fleshlight, but, hey, the butt does actually twerk, in time to music! The model with extra features is now knocked down to $799 which is an improvement over the $999 price tag. It also warms up to 98.6 degrees so that you can fool yourself into thinking you’re sticking your dick into an actual warm body for a minute or two. You can totally put it in the butt, too. What a great time to be alive.

Yeah...no.

Gonna upgrade my 3 monitor setup, something that gets used as much as the computer itself, before I would drop that much money on something that gets part-time use like VR.

As others said, this is one tech toy that other folks are going to have to be the test fodder for. Video card, monitors, and other things that you use constantly, I am right there at the front of the line. Highly specialized, part-time use devices? Not so much.

Also, XBOX controller? lol.

Can be used as a vr room, it knows where your walls are, allows standing up, full moving around, (think startrek holodeck). Reviews said its much "better" with motion sickness, vive is heavily pushing open market.
Also linked to steam and 100s? of millions of users.
Steam has Early access built in, and heaps of indi developers already building stuff for it.

Its about what I was expecting,
People line up for miles to pay more for a new phone every year that is only slightly better than the last one. Plenty of people have the money IF they capture the peoples interest and it FEELS worth it. Just wait for every day people reviews to come out and a couple grand for the experience will be worth it to many.

Seriously if it had an apple logo on it, and could only work with a top of the line mac people would be lining up for it.

An equivalent specced mobile phone costs about that much or more.

The biggest problem for me is throwing around 200-400 costings a bit pre-emptively and forcing inclusion of a xbox one controller.

And whats with the shipping costs.... holy shite!
