VIVE Pre Changes

HTC unveiled an updated version of their VIVE Pre headsets at CES, saying the enhancements in the developer units will eventually find their way into the consumer edition of the VR headsets. Fortune has word that what's changed is everything:
O’Brien says HTC has designed every piece of the HTC Pre from the ground up.

“The headset has brighter, crisper screens with Mura correction, which makes objects feel like they’re right in front of you,” O’Brien says. “It adds to the presence value.”

The headset is smaller and more comfortable than the Vive design, according to O’Brien. Interchangeable foam inserts and nose gaskets make it easier to adjust the headset to faces of any size or shape, including consumers wearing eyeglasses.

New on the Vive Pre is the new front-facing camera, which is being used in two ways. As part of the “chaperone system,” the camera overlays real-world items like walls, chairs, and tables into the virtual world for a mixed reality experience to ensure users don’t walk into things as they’re playing games or exploring experiences.

The camera they decided to add was why they delayed.

VERY smart. You don't have to worry about kicking the cat or having someone sneak up on you and play a trick on you or worse, because you can see what's in your room while you are in vr.

That's a huge downside to VR knocked out. They've knocked out motion sickness with the 1:1 movement.

Space and comfort are all that are left. If the content is good enough, people will find the space. I'm convinced. Comfort is going to still be an issue. And content is still not quite there.

Still it's all gravy at this point. Oculus and Vive will both be modest successes this year that future models and developers will iterate on in the coming years to make a viable third platform. It won't be as big as mobile or consoles. But that kind of doesn't matter.

I'm glad they've improved the design of the headset, as it was heavy and hot to wear. Straps and other adjustments take care of factors like my big head and large nose. That's easy.

The problem for me is the giant (size of a squared-off coffee cup) PIR sensors. Now they've said these are now smaller and less noisy (noisy?!) and can be tripod mounted.
But that is hopelessly impracticable for anyone who doesn't have a dedicated VR room or a huge amount of space around their PC (which I don't).

Until they come up with something that doesn't require 15sq ft of space, or huge wall-mounted "lighthouses" then the Vive has to remain off my list.

It doesn't require 15sq ft (which isn't that much BTW), you can use it sitting at your desk. And placing something the size of a small coffee cup on or near your desk is hardly impractical (or huge). The speakers on my desk are larger than that.

How does Oakley making skiing googles? There will be more models in time, but for me, for me it just has to fit my head. Since I'm unspectacular in every sense of the word, it will fit just fine.

Cutter all you gravitate to is the complaints. Clothes have issues, cars, woman, you just have to go with it and see where it all takes you.

Oh go fuck yourself, I do not. Assholes like you just choose to see the negative in other people.

You are constantly told by many you are a chronic complainer here, how do you not get the message? How is that possible?

Thank you for the morning giggle (and cutter tantrum).

Cutter has a very valid point. One size does NOT fit all. I have a huge head, wear glasses and honestly my head has a bit of a point to it. It's nice that they are taking these into consideration especially with glass wearers.

Sure it's a thing as I alluded to in my reply as well. It will still fit most and in time there will be other models. What can we do? Not enjoy it because some heads might not work with it? But as I said, he just looks for anything bad in it, he's put a line in the sand a long time ago and he won't accept VR. If it does take off, I wonder if he'll ever be able to accept it or if pride will cloud his vision.

Face it, until we can jack into the interwebs ala Snowcrash it ain't gonna' happen.

Cutter declaring your project a failure before it even launches is a pretty solid sign you're gonna be a success. Oculus should be excited.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

And that's a HUGE issue right there. Not all faces and head sizes are the same, not even close. How do you design a one size fits all for that? Even beyond a whole host of other isssues I see this as being one of the biggest. I suspect you're going to hear a lot of complaints from a lot of people how uncomfortable and hot most VR gear is - which again will lead to its demise. Face it, until we can jack into the interwebs ala Snowcrash it ain't gonna' happen.
