Out of the Blue

Congrats to the Chicago Cubs, which is not something you say every day by any stretch. It's fun when rivals like the Cubs and Cards clash in the playoffs, so that's something to look forward to. Speaking of sports (I just made myself fondly recall Howard Cosell, as that was the name of his radio segments back in the day), the NBA preseason and NHL regular season are underway, and rounding out the four major American sports, there's an NFL game tonight, so pool participants should get their picks in. Back to baseball, I just want to comment that for me the champagne celebration has jumped the shark somewhere along the way. Now that they prepare for bubbly showers by covering the lockers in plastic and giving the players protective goggles, it's time to just give it up. The only way these celebrations could be less spontaneous is if they rigged the sprinkler system to spray champagne at the flip of a switch.

Anyone else just get an email for Amazon "Prime Now"? 2 hour delivery on items with a 20$ off coupon. Going to try it out.....(Appears Minneapolis just joined the fun, but other cities have been available for a while)

Interesting. Items appear to be same price as online, they didn't charge me tax (weird), but there is a "tip" amount included in your order. In this case it was $6.00, which I left, as the amount of the goods and the coupon made it worth trying. It also states the tip can be changed up to 48 hours after the order is delivered. There is a delivery time option which in the future time is FREE (in this case 4 hours from now), but if you want it right now it will cost you.

Interesting.....this could be a game changer. (It also appears to show a map of where the items are - which it seems there is an Amazon warehouse not far from my house!?)

I didn't get anything like that, but I might be getting same day delivery here soon. I discovered a few weeks ago that Amazon now has a warehouse about an hour from where I live. I placed an order on a Thursday and Prime shipping guaranteed a Monday delivery. I was worried Saturday when my stuff hadn't shipped yet. I got an email Monday morning saying it shipped with an estimated delivery the same day, and it was here less than 12 hours later.

It is weird, the item was supposed to be here between 4-6pm. He is a couple cities away, this "Ahmed" is driving all around I assume with all of his deliveries.....the program is like Uber, I can see where he is. But there is a warehouse about 16 blocks from my house in Minneapolis....so not sure where he got the goods from....

Bummer....was hoping this was a better product - not impressed.

//Dude showed up at 7pm. With 4 packages, but I only ordered 3. I called Amazon and they told me to keep it or throw it away, then added $10 dollars credit to my account. Not a great start for them....All 4 packages had my name and info on them. Why would you print 4 stickers for 3 items? Whatever.

Craig is the most authentic Bond yet - as falls in line with Fleming's novels. He's second overall, close behind Connery - who will never be topped. However my understanding has always been James Bond is a nom de guerre issued by MI5 in the same way that Jason Bourne is a nom de guerre. I've always gone under the assumption that as double 0's are killed they're replaced and the replacement simply takes the name and number and carries on.

Remember when M said, “Orphans make the best agents”. Why? Because they don't have strong social networks and are self-reliant and don't have a strong sense of self-identity. Therefore they can more easily be trained, molded and fall into the role of a new double 0.

Daniel Craig is the worst Bond yet. It's an interesting character that he plays but it's not James Bond.

Like Star Trek, it is now an action movie. Trek was thoughtful with some action but is 100% action now. Bond was intrigue with occasional fights. Fight fight fight now!

Let's not pretend James Bond has any kind of a cohesive or definable overarching narrative bent. Sure, a couple of the earlier films had tenuous connections to each other in the form of Blofeld, but beyond that they're standalone affairs.

Agreed. Thank you all for this very civil discussion on the lore and times of James Bond. Toff

You do realize that Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall chronologically happen BEFORE he became Bond.

What is that supposed to mean? The opening scene of Casino depicts Craig attaining 007.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381061/faq#.2.1.7

Is this a prequel?

The film isn't a prequel in the traditional sense, as it is not set in the time period before Dr. No; it is very much set in the present. However, it is a prequel in respect to Bond's life, as it depicts his career before the events of Dr No, in fact Casino Royale is his first assignment as 007.

The MI6 that we are all familiar with in Dr. No is where Spectre begins and James Bond is NOW the James Bond we're familiar with; the suave smooth-talking lady's man.

At least that's my interpretation of this films. I could be wrong.

I admit I've not seen it since the theater, but IMDB lists Craig as "James Bond" in all 3 mentioned.

The James Bond films isn't like the Bourne films where multiple people can share the identity "Jason Bourne". James Bond is James Bond, but he's not the JAMES BOND until Dr. No / Spectre. In other words Eon Productions spent around ~$525 million to produce three films about James Bond's backstory and what lead to him ultimately becoming the JAMES BOND everyone knows from Connery's Dr. No on-wards. You can treat Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall as prequel-trilogy.

Make sense?

Interesting article on Murphy's Law (AKA: Bill 2646). Another example of how broken part of our government is.

He's just doing his master's bidding (the NRA). Now, let's apply science to actual gun crimes:

Yet surprisingly little population-level evidence
supports the notion that individuals diagnosed
with mental illness are more likely than anyone
else to commit gun crimes. According to Appelbaum,25
less than 3% to 5% of US crimes
involve people with mental illness, and the
percentages of crimes that involve guns are
lower than the national average for persons not
diagnosed with mental illness.

Well, I guess doing something about the 5% is something Republicans are used to.

*Scratching my head* I don't quite get why he's so pissed and apparently done with the role? What got the actor to the point that he hates doing the movies so much? Perhaps they kept making his martinis stirred???

No, he isn't. It's just typical bad journalism. He said that NOW he would rather slit his wrists than play Bond again. RIGHT NOW. After filming SPECTRE. And this is understandable. Read the interview, he is fed up with Bond right now, but he is not talking at all about never playing him again.

No, not at the moment. Not at all. That's fine. I'm over it at the moment. We're done. All I want to do is move on. I haven't given it any thought. For at least a year or two, I just don't want to think about it.
