Quote of the Day

"Disc-based games will be around forever," GameStop CEO Paul Raines tells Fortune. "The market has seen physical music sales down 50% from its peak and physical movie sales down 60% from its peak, but even in a doomsday scenario, disc-based games will be around for a long time. I see a complimentary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will also likely follow this model." Thanks GamesIndustry.biz.

the real question here is:

"what's the last disc-based game you've bought?"

for me, i *think* it was LOTR:Conquest back in 2010 or so, only cause it didn't have a digital release. Also StarCraft 2

For me it was the Orange Box from Valve. Kind of funny since Valve is primarily the reason most of us don't buy physical copies anymore.

The answer is: "I can't frakkin' remember!!!"

I can.... Deponia That was early 2012 and the only reason was that it was literally not available anywhere else.

I'm not positive but I think it was Age of Conan.

Everything I own on PS4 not including PS+ freebies (which is like 16 titles right now) and Heroes of Might and Magic VII on PC....which just released on the 29th of September. (and I am really enjoying btw) My backlog is crazy and I prefer to have physical media so a while back I made a purchasing rule: If I can't get it on disc I can't pay more than 10 bucks. There are a few titles I have yet to play that I want to but I am waiting for the inevitable sale because they don't have physical media versions.

I desperately fucking pray for see a complimentary business where we charge you a markup just to hand you a Steam/Xbox Live/PSN game code sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will really be the death knell for our business also likely follow this model. Oh please dear God, let them follow this model."

I don't think so. They can hope, but unfortunately I don't think it will be around past maybe at most one more console generation. PCs are basically done with physical media. IIRC MGSV was released with only a steam client installer on the disc but no game files lol.

I bought a physical copy of the last Ass Creed because they were on clearance at Best Buy. Prior to that I can't recall the last time I bought a physical copy of game but it's been several years at the very least.

GameStop and other content providers will need to step up and put a stop to data caps for home ISPs if this is the direction he thinks they are staying. 250 gigs a month for some people.. and you think with as much media as we all consume, we aren't going to hit that cap?

people hit 30 gig in one game download.

In the short term, because of these ridiculous caps, disc games won't be dying out even for PC. My ISP starts a cap literally tomorrow, and with these games these days being easily 50gb, I may have to go back to buying physical copies, at least from Amazon, if not actually from a brick and mortar location.

Gamestop, Best Buy, etc. have no reason to campaign against data caps, really. It can only help them, in the short term of course.

For consoles more so, yes. These days PC discs are approaching novelty item status, although I always prefer them for 'must have' games in my collection. Also, for whatever reason when some major games come out on discs they are only released in other countries, but in the U.S. - none for the same game, which absolutely sucks for those stuck with the awful broadband in many areas of in the U.S. with its dilapidated infrastructure.
