Truthfully, the only thing Half-life 3 would bring to the table is, maybe, something for the mod community to give us the better titles of the next ten years.

If you look at the top played games on steam, you'll realize they are all stand alone games based off modifications from 10+ years ago.

CS:GO
Team Fortress 2
DOTA
LOL
ETC.

it still blows me away that 28,000 people are playing skyrim at any given time.. this is because of modifications.

Well said.

If a developer looks at a game and essentially says "I don't know if we could do this and be sure not to fuck it up"...I got nothing but respect for them not doing it. We complain all the time about people cashing in rather than making a good game, it would seem weird to complain about Valve doing the opposite. I also wouldn't expect them to sell off or loan the IP out to someone else. If Valve is worried about disappointing people if they do it themselves it doesn't make sense to hand off the controls to someone else to possibly fuck up.

It isn't like the world is short on games to play.

There was a good video awhile back that made a good case against us ever seeing HL3. It basically argued that they have nothing to gain financially from releasing considering the position they are in with Steam, so it's not worth the possible (or inevitable) fan backlash if it is disappointing.

That's not how Valve works though and even if it were true, that same logic works for it being released. If they have nothing to lose because Steam is a money printing operation then it won't hurt to release the game either.

I just want to see anything with a 3 in it released. TF3, L4D3, whatever.

I know they won't, but I wish they'd at least license out the IP so that someone else could do it.

No. It's a myth like Loch Ness and Star Citizen.

Nah, just a whisper in the wind at this point.

Valve (or at least Gabe?) thinks classic gameplay doesn't sell anymore or for some reason their open ended development teams have no mass interest in simply rolling their chairs over to a HL3 section, even though classic style games made a heavy return in recent years. HL3 maybe could sell like hot cakes if it kept to the original formula.

"The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]." - Mr. Gabe
