Out of the Blue

In the past I've expressed my unabashed love for the Rock Band series, so when Rock Band 4 was announced with the ability to import your existing song library, I was set to take the plunge and get an Xbox One to play it. Unfortunately, Harmonix has indicated RB4 may launch without online multiplayer support, though they are being quite vague and confusing on the topic. Anyway, since all I do in the game is play online with friends, absence of online multiplayer will cause me to lose interest. That interview says they could add this with a post-release patch, but given their history of not being very active at patching their previous games, and the implication that his project is being developed on a shoestring budget, I will wait to see if multiplayer support materializes before making a commitment. They have a history of multiplayer misfires, as Rock Band 1 had no online career mode and Rock Band 3 dropped competitive duel modes that were part of Rock Band 2, each time (mis)-stating that not many players wanted them (the odd part of this is that all the videos I've seen have me convinced Rock Band 4 is a port of Rock Band 2, and if that's correct, I'm surprised it won't support all the same features). This still seems up in the air, as Harmonix's most recent announcement includes a FAQ saying: "We’re always listening to our fans. We know that online play is important to many of you, and we we’ll have more to say about our plans in this area in the coming months. Stay tuned!" That was three months ago and the game is due in three weeks, so I'm glad I didn't hold my breath (or preorder).

Ya shame on people shooting video of pod of whales feeding. How dare they.

And seriously, ignore the elitist losers when it comes to city names.
Its like an idiot ex I had claiming I wasn't from Vancouver because I didn't go to school in the city. Yet I was born in the city and she wasn't.

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth DLC opened for preorder today, release date is 30th October and it's 40% discounted until the day of release I think. Isaac's art style is so simplistic it's a bit off-putting, but it has a unique setting and is the most replayable modern reoguelike I've played by a country mile.

Incidentally are you guys aware of the VDC mod for Master of Orion 2? I don't recall seeing it discussed here. I know how much admiration and recognition that the Vampire: Masquerade mod gets for superhuman commitment... I don't know who the VDC guys are but their balance / overhaul mod for MOO2 is still in active development to this day too. I recently got it set up again on a 10 year old laptop now running linux and it has dated amazingly well.

San Fran?!? Ah, the language of the non-local or 'never been there'. Don't get me started on 'Frisco'.

Sorry pal, the non-local and 'never been there' outnumber you by a pretty wide margin, which means they decide the common vernacular. Which sort of snob are you, do you call it [City By] The Bay as if there aren't a thousand bays in the world, or just The City, like you're holding on to the glory days of the 1800s? Or maybe something else so inside, that only people in your zip code get it?

Apparently they're all like that there...

My brother lived in SF form many years. Made the mistake of saying "Frisco" once and he went on a 5m diatribe.

Never understood any of that. I mean, I am a northern California native who has lived all over the world but has called the Bay Area home for the last 15 years....and if I know what town you are referring to I am good. Call it whatever you want as long as I know what you are referring to. How in the hell is calling it "frisco" a bad thing? That's just stupid.

My time with Rockband has come and gone. Not enough evolution of gameplay, and most people I know lost interest.

Though on the upside I managed to sell off my old Rockband instruments with the upcoming release of Rockband 4

Yes and no, it's a very niche group of players after all, and the money spent on better hardware didn't provide any return to Harmonix either (they made 0 cents off the $2500 I spent on a Roland e-kit).

But I totally agree that anyone who would have invested in better gear would have likely been buying DLC on a semi-regular basis.

Also disappointed that even with MadCatz making the hardware there's no support for the midi pro adapter either.

Exactly. No advanced drum kit compatibility, no sale! What's the point of having a "pro" mode for drums if you can't use anything but a cheap plastic kit?

From the Harmonix Rock Band 4 FAQ:

Q: I play Rock Band with my ION Drum Kit. Will the ION Drum Kit, as well as other MIDI drum kits, be compatible with Rock Band 4?

A: The short answer is “no, not at launch.”...

It seems like a strange business decision to abandon a group which spent the most money on hardware to play Rock Band, especially since they probably bought more than their fair share of DLC as well.

Count me as another Rock Band fan who's passing on the new title.

Online play was a definite factor in keeping my interest up for a long time. One thing to note with the 'existing song library' thing is that it doesn't support exporting the RB3 disc content 'yet'. The new setlist is also kind of lame, I can only think of 4, maybe 5 tracks off the top of my head that I'd buy as DLC. Also disappointed that even with MadCatz making the hardware there's no support for the midi pro adapter either.

And while Harmonix has been crappy at patching their product (PS3 has persistent crashing issues when connected regardless of whether or not you're actually playing online) they have been clear in calling RB4 a platform and implying future development. Though I think most of it is based on hope that it'll hit like it's 2008 again and that people are really into the party angle.

Speaking of party gaming has anyone here submitted a clip to be part of the Rock Band Road Crew thing?
