Torchlight Burns Out Runic

Runic Games recently announced Hob, an upcoming exploration game, and during a conversation at PAX, IGN learned from the developer that burn out and a reluctance to compete with Diablo III are the reasons they chose not to pursue development of a third Torchlight game at this time. "We’re just burnt out," Runic Games President Marsh Lefler explains of the decision to eschew Torchlight 3. "Let’s admit it, Diablo 3 is killing it right now. Diablo 3 is a really fun game. Not that Torchlight 2 isn’t a fun game, it is, but it’s just different. For us to try to compete with Diablo 3? We weren’t trying to compete before."

So my counterpoint to your point: I could delete every post that every user in this thread has a problem with (which, as I say, is an entirely separate issue), and it would not solve the problem your username is causing. You changing your name back is a behavior that has consequences for other people, including me.

Is his user name really causing a problem? It only seems to be brought up by hostile posters (and yourself I guess). What's the downside to some temporary confusion, "Oh I thought you were Krovven/Krowen, sorry I see you're a different poster." That's the reasonable reaction.

The real problem here wasn't with name confusion. Axis knows they are two different names, his theory (even though he himself evidently finds it ridiculous) is that Krovven registered a new similar name to sockpuppet for him. Krovven called you (obviously a mistake) to just confirm that they're separate posters, he could have just linked to your post when you said it previously.

I don't think confusion lead to this situation, it was a user trolling that initiated it and I don't believe my name would have made any difference. I'm not making it a matter of anything but I do feel that you're punishing me for someone else misbehaving while that user gets off without consequences. If that's the way you want to run your site then I can't do anything about it but voice my displeasure so that's what I was attempting to do. Perhaps it was a bit immature to change it back and I do apologize but I was upset because this seems unfair. I think if you were in the same situation you probably wouldn't be thrilled about it either.

I will make your life easier though and come up with an alternative user name, I will refrain from posting until I do to avoid any confusion. I hope that is acceptable.

Sorry but I don't feel that's a fair or accurate summary. The user with a similar name posted numerous examples of that axis person attacking others for no reason, people who don't have the same name. It's clear that the behavior of that user is a problem and I don't feel that this would have played out much differently even if my name was Miley Cyrus. I posted once here and purposely ignored that user harassing me for no reason, expecting moderation to take care of it. I did exactly what I was supposed to and I don't feel I should be punished for it. The user who provoked the situation should be the one who has to deal with the consequences of his behavior, not the people affected.

I'm not trying to be an ass though and I'm not here to make anyones life harder, you also provide a free service which I appreciate. To make your life easier I added a clarification in the signature line of my user profile which is visible on every post. Is that sufficient? I could also add the letter of my first name to my nickname but I would prefer not to if possible for personal reasons. I can also just stop using the website entirely if you want but I do enjoy reading it and commenting for what its worth. I apologize for my initial reaction but I was a bit upset at the solution.

You got "unfairly attacked" because of your confusing name, and the solution is extra moderation for me.

Thanks for your help and understanding. Really appreciated. Golfclap

I am changing my name back. I made one post in this and it had nothing to do with anyone else. I got unfairly attacked and instead of punishing the person responsible you force me to change my name which is my last name. I had no idea there was another user with a similar name before registering and I've never deceived anyone about it. Why is it our fault for having a similar name instead of the user who goes out of his way to troll others for no apparent reason? Someone who is just targeting others for unprovoked personal attacks. Treat the disease, not the symptoms.

Ban me if you want but I'm keeping my name.

Sheesh. I made a whole post replying to Krovven thinking it was Krowen. What a nightmare.

Okay, I edited Krowen's nick, he can alter it as he sees fit, but the chaos here was not worth his freedom of choice.

Other than that, I explained why I did or didn't delete posts. Move on and just play nice.

So you removed posts (at least my two) that didn't have any attacks or insults, one which was a reply to InBlack...but you've left all the other bullshit in this thread?

I explained that I was not going back to try and triage that mess you guys left, I was just asking you to cut it out, and when you didn't, I cut it out for you. Everybody thinks they want the iron hand until it comes down.

And I have already explained once that as far as I know you are not Krowen... if mistaken identity is a big concern, you might want to consider another nickname, because that's going to keep coming up.

Like I said I never asked for moderation. Just you to explain that I'm not Krowen since Axis didn't believe it and just continued on.

If Axis is going to continue attacking me or people that he thinks are me over multiple threads, I'm going to say something if you aren't going to do anything about on your own.

All you have to do is look at the posts in those threads to see how it played out. I even ignored him at first until he kept it up. And his behaviour is not even unique towards me.

So it's okay for InBlack to make comments to me, but not okay for me to reply? There was nothing wrong with my reply that warranted a removal.

Blue, I asked you to come explain to him that I'm not Krowen. I honestly don't care about the rest of his vitriol, I'm a big boy and don't need it moderated. He has only received what he asked for with his attacks. It remains as evidence to prove my point, if nothing else.

Ima quote Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?"

As for Runic, I'll reiterate that they should just make a sci fi ARPG. It would be fun and new for them, they'd have carte blanche to do whatever they wanted, and it would be a hit since it's an underserved niche.

I can see where Runic is coming from, they were about at their limit in terms of what they could accomplish without growing into a significantly larger studio. It's also gotta be boring working on the same thing for years at a time, I know I would get burned out at the office if we didn't have some project variety. Plus as Marsh said Diablo 3 is finally hitting its stride, took too long to get there but whatever its there now.

I've been asked to step in here, but I'm at a complete loss. Please take a time out from attacking each other, in spite of all the great things it is accomplishing. Respecting other people's opinions does not mean you are agreeing with them, and disagreeing does not require such rancor.

I'm afraid I don't have the ability to lock threads that become too toxic, so if this becomes an ongoing problem I'll have to consider deleting entire threads to put out fires like this.

You should reread your own replies in many threads, if you can get past the 100's of *removed*, then compare them to others to gauge what an actual "insult" looks like. But I'm sure you know that, and are disappointed I'm not coming down to your level.

You are petty.

Lol, you are such a hyprocrite it's not funny. You started the insults in all of the examples. Going back to the Verno PoE discussion, you were the first to attack and insult him. See post #38 and #39 of this thread. You made the insult, not me, not Krowen. See the Diablo 3 Season 4 thread, Post #2 and #3. You again insulted Krowen.

NONE of these attacks has involved me. None of it. In the recent threads it's you insulting Krowen, thinking you are attacking me because his name is similar to mine.

Figure it the fuck out.
