Out of the Blue

My time babysitting the guinea pig and leopard gecko is drawing to an end, and I'll miss visiting the critters. I'm not sure they'll miss me as much as I imagined, however. Yesterday I was visiting Buddy the gecko, and as always he seemed fascinated by me, coming over to where I pushed my finger against the glass and darting out his tongue to investigate. I decided to help satisfy his curiosity by sticking my finger in the tank, and he instantly darted over and bit me, so I think what I interpreted as friendly/curious gestures may have been him defending his territory (lizards are not known for their warmth, so this shouldn't be a shock). Whatever bitty little teeth the wee fellow has are inconsequential, so this did not hurt or anything, but I am saddened to have the illusion of our friendship shattered, and I am very sorry that I seemed to upset him.

Evolved yes, civilized no.

"Evolved" is kind of nebulous. Besides, evolution doesn't always result in something better or superior.
Humans evolved into social creatures. Our society, our civilization, is what set us apart from animals. Not to say that some animals don't have aspects of culture and society, because they do. Mammals in particular benefit from their social structures. Violent retaliation is a baser instinct not a more "evolved" one. But I'm sure you learned this in grade school like the rest of us.

He hasn't even been tried or sentenced but thanks for jumping to conclusions, I think you lost your club cave man. Your couch potato tough guy antics don't fool me, talk is cheap.

Back in the real world, he will be tried according to actual law and not some cave man era bullshit. He's already been tried in the court of public opinion and will likely lose his livelihood anyway which will prevent him from doing this trophy hunting again since it is very expensive. But hey no lets just murder everyone who commits a crime guys! Rolleyes

But some people are too soft for that.

I don't believe in capital punishment, but I agree that the penalties for killing any animal unnecessarily are far too lenient. Penalties need to be much closer to manslaughter IMO.

Also, trophy hunting in general needs to be prohibited worldwide, with vast swaths of megafauna put on the no-kill list.

Most hunting IS prohibited worldwide. Except if you are rich. If you are rich you can pay a shitload of money to hunt whatever the fuck you like. Protected animals are just more expensive. The only reason people are giving a fuck about this story is because a big pussycat got shot. NO one gave a shit when this asshole killed a white rhino last year, one of the most endangered species in the world. It wasnt an illegal hunt either. He paid a huge ammount of cash to be allowed to do it. This is how the world works today, it's actually a perfect allegory on how Capitalism allows those in power (or with means) to do whatever the fuck they like, as long as they pay their dues. I'm surprised that you can't hunt people for sport already.

The EMDrive stuff is very interesting, it freaks me out to hear some of the smartest minds in the field admit it can work but that they can't explain how.

The thing that blows me fucking away about this drive, which I've been reading about for about a decade, is that no one wants to front the fucking money to actually test it in space. Point it at the moon and turn it on and if it works, then argue about how it can't possibly work. It took NASA over 15 years just to test it in their lab. It took the chinese to actually try it out first and then NASA to say "Ok maybe it works". I realize that it costs a metric fuck ton of money to send weight into space.. but I also know that we spend so little on space exploration technology.

There isn't even a scientific paper reporting test methodology and results, as far as I've been able to tell. All of the articles on it are from pseudoscience/crank blogs that just reference each other in a big circle jerk. They need to show something before anyone's going to dump a bunch of money into something that violates one of the fundamental laws of physics.

The last time they actually released any data on any of their tests: the thrust was in the wrong direction. It continued even when the power was turned off.

http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20140006052.pdf

It's not exactly a fully published one but they are testing it with thrust output.

My Dad is a theoretical physicist. When I told him yesterday about this drive that has been gaining traction in the experimental physicist community he was interested at first, but once I told him that it appears to break the law of conservation of momentum he immediately said it's bullshit. He wouldn't listen to anything after that, even though I told him that they tested it in NASA, the JPL and recently in Germany. I don't blame him though, there is no theoretical foundation on why it works and when you build something that works but have no idea why it works, you can't expect the scientific community to take you seriously. Their whole community is built on the peer reviewed process, and for good reason. Too many crackpots and snake oil salesmen exist in the world today. I hope this doesn't turn out to be an elaborate hoax, like the cold fusion thing. I don't understand why NASA or someone don't scale the thing up like the Chinese have done and produce something that they can show to theorists.

I guess you don't need to worry about evolution given that you don't understand how ridiculous that statement is. What did the hunter do wrong? He shot an animal. What do you want to do him? Shoot him. Do you not see the irony there? You are no better than he is.

Even though he was very friendly, my iguana bit me plenty of times. He probably mistook my finger for food because I often fed him by hand.

It's great that you've completely lost sense of what separates us from the animals in the first place. If he broke the law then let him be tried and judged accordingly. I don't want vigilante justice nut cases like you running around enforcing the law based on your emotions. It's great that you looked at the news one day and discovered lions being killed is a problem, guess what this shit happens to many species every day, not to mention 599 other lions each year. That lion killer is a real standup hunter. From the article:

Palmer in 2008 pleaded guilty to making false statements to U.S. wildlife officials about a black bear he had fatally shot in western Wisconsin.

From the other article:

Cecil had been closely studied by researchers at the University of Oxford since 2008 as part of efforts to study a decline in Africa’s lion population and to better understand the threats the animals face.

Well, I guess they learned what one of the main threats to a healthy lion population is.

No there weren't. That was why it was such a clusterfuck and everyone was so pissed off. Bush was a useless tool as always and Jeff Brown and FEMA didn't even begin to show up until after the damage was done. Most of those people were on their own.

It's why there's a lot of credence to the theory that they let it happen to clear out all the poor black folk so the white developers could swoop in and buy up all that property for next to nothing - which is precisely what happened.
