Scrolls Closing

The Scrolls website announces Mojang's plans to close up their virtual card-based strategy game, a surprise revelation just a couple of hours after the release of an Echoes balance update. The Microsoft-owned Minecraft developer is committing to operate the game for at least another year, and they are continuing to sell it, saying they will use all future proceeds to keep it playable for "as long as possible." Here's word:
Hi everyone,

After much deliberation, we’ve come to an important decision that we’d like to share: Echoes will be the last major content patch for Scrolls. We won’t be adding features or sets from now on, though we are planning to keep a close eye on game balance.

Scrolls will still be available to purchase for the time being, and our servers will run until at least July 1st, 2016. All future proceeds will go towards keeping Scrolls playable for as long as possible.

The launch of the Scrolls beta was a great success. Tens of thousands of players battled daily, and many of them remain active today. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development.

We’ve had a great time working on Scrolls, and appreciate every last player who’s downloaded our game. Extra big thanks to the most dedicated members of our community; some of you have logged in almost every day since release and dedicated a large portion of your time to dominating the leaderboards and taking care of new players. We salute you, honourable scrolldiers.

We will do our best to answer any questions you might have on the standard channels.

Thanks for reading, everybody.

I liked Scrolls, this is unfortunate. I would like to see a good videogame version of Android: Netrunner. Much different than Magic/Hearthstone.

They should have done this long ago to concentrate on minecraft and sequels. Entering the crowded digital CCG market was a mistake, and was only done because notch told a friend he would.

They had practically no software for it, I'm not sure you can really call that support. Kinect was half baked, a solid idea that couldn't find a decent implementation and the third party market wasn't about to absorb that risk when even Microsoft wasn't committed to it.

As for Scrolls does anyone really care? I wonder how many people here actually played it as opposed to just wanting to give Microsoft a tongue lashing.

It's pretty clear that the Kinect was dumped by MS simply because the XB1 + Kinect at $500 could not compete with the PS4 at $400. I'm sure MS had every intention of continuing support for the Kinect, but they simply couldn't compete with the competition given the extra cost of the Kinect. If MS "clearly had no plan" to utilize or support the Kinect, they wouldn't have launched the XB1 bundled with it.

MS has a history of introducing services and products, only to let them slide away into obscurity. Why? MS as a company does what the winner of intense internal powers struggle wants. And this winner is determined every year anew, followed by dropping support on all projects his predecessor has introduced. There are only two constants: Windows and Office. Everything else is ammunition and expendable.

fuck you microsoft. you aren't throwing out the air freshener, you're throwing up the crumpled blueprints you found in the glovebox which is a secret treasure map which leads you to the ferarri factory.

I haven't played Scrolls, but "air freshener" didn't sound right. From what I've read, your analogy is much more appropriate.

And as someone mentioned, you've got an existing exploitable apparently well designed CCG that can be developed to challenge the giants of the genre and a closed platform on which to promote it. Why wouldn't you do that??

go play the free demo! and I think the full version is like $5? last year it'll even be playable, get em while it lasts! and if you want cards or gold let me know, I literally have more than I know what to do with in that game.

LOL K. I've been playing CCGs for 20 years. I've never seen anything like scrolls before. It's far from generic, infact it's not really a CCG, it's a CCG-tabletop hybrid.

but look at me talking as if you'd actually know what you're talking about. silly me. go play the free demo.

Used air fresheners don't generate revenue. This would, especially if it was developed and expanded to something like Xbox Live. You know that piece of shit Kinect device Microsoft forced on gamers and then forgot about? They could use that. It's better than it being a paperweight.

I honestly don't get Microsoft's strategy with the Kinect. It was bundled with the XB1 yet Microsoft clearly had NO plan to utilise it or support it. Microsoft is blundering from one abortion to another.

It actually had a official launch... sadly terribly timed on 12th December...

Also what do they mean with "last major content patch" this was like the fucking FIRST and ONLY content patch to begin with.

Game had terrible support imo and that is what killed it.. that and against Hearthstone... you have to be insane to make a card game that has (imo) terrible art and gameplay design. It's just boring.. visually uninteresting and has no proper random / tavern brawl mode.

This and only this.

Dean Hall, the guy from DayZ, recieves the same scorn after Bohemia took over the development for the DayZ stand-alone.

Heck, there are even people, who only hate CliffyB, because he made tons of money from "selling out to MS" and not because of his constant verbal dumbfuckery.

Im not sure why all the hate against Notch. He used to be this indy developer that scored a hit with one of his games, nothing new and unusual about that, and was also pretty hands-on and protective of his games, again nothing unusual about that either.

He joked once that he would sell his IPs for 2 Billion dollars. Microsoft didnt get the joke and shelled out the cash.

Im guessing people are just expressing their envy by ranting against Notch for selling out. He scored, and he scored big time! So all the best to him and the envious fucks be damned.

They'd be better off working with Blizzard to do the same thing except with Hearthstone. It sells their augmented reality shit into the mainstream a lot better than crappy Scrolls which no one's ever heard of and could be replaced by any generic card game.

When you're trying to sell a new tech, you need to use existing popular properties to give it weight... like hey... MINECRAFT.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I can't understand how Microsoft can spend so much money on the company and then not every bother leveraging the IPs. Surely this would be perfect for Xbox Live?

Then again, Microsoft's gaming strategy has been rather disastrous and the company has shown nothing but contempt for PC gaming so I'm not at all surprised.

Some IPs are not worth the effort it takes to utilize them man.

You're essentially calling Microsoft stupid for buying a Ferrari and then throwing out the pine air freshener that the seller left inside, calling it a waste of money.

Their strategy for PC is generally pretty lazy and ineffective, but this isn't exactly the best example to show that.
