Star Wars: Battlefront to Support Dolby Atmos

Dolby Labs announces that Star Wars: Battlefront will be the first game to support their Dolby Atmos system for 3D sound placement (thanks ASLayerAODsk). Here's how this works:
What distinguishes Dolby Atmos from earlier sound technologies is also what makes it perfect for gaming. Dolby Atmos is object-based sound. That means that every object in a game scene – a speeding car, a rocket, a charging tiger – can have a sound associated with it. The sound moves precisely as the object moves. That produces sound that’s much more realistic and enveloping than older sound technologies, which could only assign sounds to channels, like your right or left surround speakers.

Star Wars Battlefront Key ArtGames and gaming platforms take a long time to develop, and it’s too soon to make any announcements about other specific gaming products with Dolby Atmos. But Dolby has a long history in gaming. Gamers know that for years virtually all the best games have been mixed in Dolby® surround sound. We’re excited about working with partners like EA to bring the next generation of sound, Dolby Atmos, into the best game experiences of the future.

I would hope that the bots will just naturally step in and replace players as they join/leave the server to keep the "battle" at a full 20 on 20... but I'm an optimist at heart.

Ideally that would be a dedicated server optional setting. But yeah, dedicated servers == wishful thinking.
I have a nifty blue line!

Have you ever played Battlefront? "Missions" are basically the only game mode. The only difference with "co-op" would be... one or two less bots.

bots will be available both on and offline

we'll see, they haven't detailed any of the game modes but it sounds like the bots will be specific to the co-op mode and not the 20v20 competitive mode.

Thanks. I pre-ordered this and will buy Premium too. It's Star Wars.

Uh-oh, your poor titties. You sure you're ready for the milking? Better stock up on bag balm for your udders, dude.
They're banking and relying on people like you though. Please don't come here and cry how buggy and shitty everything is. You get what you deserve if you preorder any EA game and even more so if it is based on a popular franchise.

I'm more interested in knowing if we're getting bots in the game. My PC doesn't have a Dolby Atmos setup.

No heavily-multiplayer games these days feature or at least depend on bots. Look at how Battlefield games dropped bots completely. We're in the day and age of fast, always-on Internet access. Multiplayer is the key. My only gripe is the proposed 40 player limit.

Bots will be available.

*for "Missions" which are the co-op portion of the game.

Yep. Used to get accused of cheating all the time in CS because I was using A3D and boost others used EAX. Occlusion and reverb wasn't great but directional was amazing.

A good third party reusable sound tech is so many years overdue. Actually excited about this if it does end up working on standard hardware

I still think Aureal A3D was the best HRTF spatial sound experience there was. 17 years ago, no less. Maybe there's some good reason why something similar cannot be done in modern games. Does anyone know if AMD TrueAudio is as good (I never tried it)?

Yeah, I'm definitely not seeing how this is any different than how things have been done in video games for years. As I understand it, it's been done in software lately and it would be nice to move it back to hardware, but it's not a particularly computationally intensive task, so the price of the equipment seems odd. Of course, I haven't looked into it, and I'm sure it does other interesting things, but they're not selling it with their description.

I don't get this... someone correct me i'm sure what I'm about to say is not 100% accurate.

Nothing about Atmos will improve anyone's gaming experience at home unless they have more than 7.1 surround sound speakers. Atmos allows for extra channels (in any dimension you wish which is really cool) and panning data, but it basically does nothing without the extra physical channels. Atmos at home is also completely different from the theater, at home they embed the "extra channel data" into the 7.1 streams. Atmos in the theater is live-processed 3D audio based on their custom speaker configurations.
