I am a long time daily lurker myself, still am for the most part as I don't post often. I also didn't create an account until 2003. I believe I started hitting Bluesnews in 1997 when I got my Voodoo 1 card and I used to hit other sites like Operation 3DFX and VoodooExtreme and they were always linking to articles posted on Bluesnews. Now only one remains.

This was one of the first websites I had bookmarked probably back around 1996. I lurked for ages before making an account but I've had it for 14 years - so long that I can't update it because my email address is now considered invalid thanks to some change Frans (probably) made some time ago

I'd happily pay a subscription fee in exchange for an ad-free site, even if this was just in the form of Patreon and guilt-free Adblock usage. I have Blue's whitelisted in AdBlock but Ghostery blocks the ads with frighteningly large numbers of trackers, which is most of them. I'd be very surprised if I couldn't easily top what ad revenue I could ever potentially bring in, that must be sod all per visitor.

Those are some good memories Blue, thanks for keeping an archive like that! This is the oldest website I can recall regularly going to, and it is still the first thing on my bookmark bar!

Speaking of Voodoos... I won a Voodoo 3500 (the one with the TV tuner) at a Quake 3 Arena LAN party. That was the height of my lifetime achievements, and it's been all downhill since then.

is anyone here under 30?!? i think blue's traffic numbers will probably remain stable until we all start kicking the bucket as we're reading Blue's in our retirement homes.

First started lurking here to get the skinny on Quake and Quake II mods... looks like I made this account in 2007. I'm wondering if I made an older one at some point. I find it hard to believe I lurked for 10 whole years before even posting a comment. Then again I did primarily discuss games on IRC in the early 2000s, and stayed away from forums.

Speaking of that, considering I've made my way onto pretty much everyone's ignore list over the last 8 years for daring to disagree, I should probably just make another one. Feels like I'm wasting my breath posting about most stuff when I'm really just talking to myself and users like JDreyer who don't use their ignore lists.

Same here, I started coming daily in '98 or '99, but didn't create an account and start posting until 2004. Man, I wish I had my web history from back then. I have no idea how I found Blues in the first place, but it has been a daily visit in my life for almost two decades.

Blue, if it comes down to brass tacks, and you're not making enough ad revenue, please consider doing a Patreon. I know there are lots of people here that hate ads but want to support you in that way. Hell, last week, the ads from another site were bogging down my laptop so much that I am considering installing an ad blocker and whitelisting Blues. I know, I know, what the hell is taking me so long. I just believe that the sites I visit deserve the ad revenue so I put up with it.

I think I got linked to Blue's from one of the other old Quake sites. Maybe Stomped, which I believe shutdown almost 15 years ago.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

HBO To Netflix: Bring It On.

I find myself more often than not watching the shows that Netflix produces over the ones they acquire. They're that good. Next on the to-watch list: Daredevil and Bloodline.

Shows made for cable are often just annoying: it's obvious that they're made with specific commercial breakpoints, and they're often made for the lowest common denominator and lack a lot of intellectually or emotionally stimulating content. The original Netflix shows are just usually better in that regard.

I've heard Marco Polo is good as well, but I've not seen it yet.

All I know is that had to be one of the most obnoxiously pretentious introductions to an article I've read in a long time. I hope Mr. Plepler enjoyed Ms. Laporte's BJ afterwards.

I don't think HBO is in any real danger from netflix so long as they continue to offer quality shows and make changes, like they currently are, to severe complete reliance on the cable co.'s they'll be okay.

Yeah, I was working for an ISP at the time as a tech monkey and all the tech guys went out at lunch and bought a Voodoo card. We came back and set them up on the office LAN and ended up playing Quake the whole night. It was Ahhh-mazing! I still the biggest thrill had to be a few years later when Everquest launched. Finally a graphical MUD in 3D!!!

I bought a SECOND Voodoo2, just to play Unreal in whooping 1024x768!!!

I was on a voodoo rush (the combo 2d/3d board) and while Unreal ran, it wasn't great. So I immediately ran out and bought a voodoo2. That was such a great time...

Hell yeah, I remember seeing the translucent water surface for the first time and being amazed. I remember a friend had a Riva TNT card at the time and the two cards would render games in completely different colors and lighting schemes.
