Elite: Dangerous on Steam

Steam News announces that Elite: Dangerous is now available on Steam, a few months after the launch of the space combat MMOG. This will entitle purchasers to the upcoming OS X edition, but Polygon (thanks nin) reached out to Frontier Developments and learned that this will be the case for all owners of the game.

If a friend has E:D is there any kind of discount for referrals? I really want to get this but I just can't stomach $60 when I'm not entirely sure, 1. My system can handle it adequately and 2. That it's something I'll play $60 worth of content out of it...

I don't understand why there can't be some kind of tutorial/demo mission or something. I mean, it's an ONLINE game (for all intents and purposes) so I don't get why they can't do something like that? Would help people to decide if they have the right equipment. I've been told by my close friend that he uses an Xbox360 controller and while a little unwieldy, it does work ok, if you don't want to shell out for an X52/HOTAS right now...

I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight, and it's a lot better for space games than the 360 controller, and should only set you back $50-60.

Target has it cheaper than Amazon.

I want to know if this game is going to get some story content or not. I asked around on the forums yesterday, my impressions at the moment are that the game is a interesting system with a couple of template missions, but no content as far as real story and characters go. That being said the appeal of this game with a Voice commands, Vive and HOTAS is... attractive.

I am now about 10x more interested in buying it [on sale].

And I'm now ten times less interested in it due to the added layer of DRM in addition to the PERMANENT ONLINE requirement.

I've been playing Starpoint Gemini 2 for a while now. Decided to get this instead of the Elite:D(RM) and having a blast. GOG version.

Well it is a full-price game, $60 in the US. If they went by the exact exchange rate, it ought to be $75 CAD.

Either way, that's why you wait for a sale!

And if I walk into a store here, I'll find the games priced at exactly the same as in the US. $49.99-59.99 so what's the excuse now? There is none, just pure fucking people.

Physical stores are slower to react to the fact that the CAD is only worth 0.80 USD currently?

Yeah, well GabeN seems to love regional pricing so wtf is our 25% adjustment?

@Dr. Squick

The new Galaxy S6s are 2,560 x 1,440. I assume that will be what's used in the OR CV1. That should help a bit with text blurriness while still being renderable by a mid-high end video card. 4K would be even better, but I doubt there are many PCs out there that could render 4K @ 90hz.

Anyway, if the OR CV1 is 2,560 x 1,440, I'll pick one up.

Text visibility can vary depending on a few other factors, including how the Rift is adjusted, IPD settings, etc - I should mention for my experience with the Rift and Elite: Dangerous I actually found the text pretty readable (but still blurry).

So I disagree that text is "absolutely unreadable" as a lot of things can factor into this - but it's true the tech does have a ways to go. When it hits final and the blurry problems are addressed, it'll be extremely awesome.

Was hoping for the full VR package on this one.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. Also, this is one of those games where the longer you wait, the better the experience will be.

FYI I got to borrow an Occulus DK2 to play Elite Dangerous with after playing on a 130" projection screen for a month or so, and even though I was VERY anti-rift before, it definitely won me over. I still think all the Rift demos that I played are awful. But the one to one matching of head movement, combined with the much larger field of view, is a completely different gaming experience.

Much needs to be improved through. Text is absolutely unreadable in the game through the Rift, and the resolution is just too low for such a wide field of view. But I was blown away by the experience. Just simple things like the game renders your joystick if it is one of the most popular ones. So you move your head down and to the right, and you see your virtual arm, exactly where your real-life arm is, and you see your hand on the joystick. When you press the "deploy hardpoints" button, your in-game thumb reaches up and touches that button. Then you move your head to the left and your other virtual hand is laying on the exact same throttle you are holding.

Give it just a few more years, and this will be a big game changer in gaming. If they can fix the resolution/blurriness issues and make it razor sharp, it will be a 100% buy at almost any price for me. It almost instantly became second nature for me to move my head way up and back when dog fighting to find where my enemy went; it was amazing.

At this point though I would NOT recommend anyone get the DK2 to play Elite Dangerous with solely. The text truly is unreadable, even with massive XML editing to change the color. That was very immersion-breaking for me struggle so badly to read what someone was telling me. Are they saying "carry on, you are clear" or are they saying, "I'm about to blow you into bits?"

Same, I'd be comfortable buying this vastly empty(still?) game at about $9.99 or so, just to see how it looks.
