Company of Heroes 2/Total War: ROME II Free Weekend/Competition

SEGA announces a second annual Make War Not Love promotion is now underway as an unconventional way to celebrate Valentine's Day. This will pit fans of Company of Heroes 2 against fans of Total War: ROME II, with the winning game to receive a free content update. In support of this, both games are playable for free on Steam for the duration of the event, and the strategy sequels are each on sale for 75% off as well. Company of Heroes 2 won last year's competition, and here's word on the rematch:
SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe, Ltd present the rematch of the heavyweight strategy gaming contest they said could never happen, with Total War™: ROME II and Company of Heroes 2™ communities going head to head in the second annual ‘Make War Not Love’ competition. This Valentine’s Day weekend, the two communities will compete in consecutive three hour rounds. Every in-game victory will count towards that side’s tally for the round and the community that wins the most rounds will earn some free DLC for players of the respective game.

Battle commences at 18:00GMT/10:00PST today and blows will be traded until 18:00GMT/10:00PST on February 15. During this time, both games will be available to play for free via Steam! Get involved in the pre-match trash talking on Twitter by following @totalwar and @companyheroes using the hashtag - “#mwnl”.

If Company of Heroes 2 wins, an assortment of premium skins and commanders worth around $20 will become available to download for free from 18:00GMT/10:00PST on February 16 until 18:00GMT/10:00PST on February 18.

If Total War: ROME II lands the knockout blow, the Black Sea Colonies Culture Pack will be made available for free from 18:00GMT/10:00PST on February 15 until 18:00GMT/10:00PST on February 17. The previously unannounced Longbeards Culture Pack for Total War: ATTILA will also be free for a day when it launches in late February.

To add some extra spice to proceedings, the winning team in each round will see their community manager take a shot on the ‘Make War Not Love’ Shooting Range, choosing from a selection of random historical weaponry and taking aim at offensive Valentine’s trinkets. Make sure you catch all the carnage in merciless slo-mo! There will even be exclusive Steam achievements to pick up throughout the promotion! Look out for “Company of Zeroes, more like…” and “Snore, snore, Total Bore!” along with several more.

Wow, thanks for this tidbit. Any desire to purchase this game is gone now. I'm not a big RTS fan anyway but I did enjoy COH1 when it came out. Grinding for unlockables is not my kind of game (well besides my addiction to WoW for a few months every new expac..).

I'm not sure I'd ever say you need to grind for unlockables, or even that it was a thing in the game honestly. They're there, but it's more like something you get sometimes rather than something you play to get if that makes sense.

There are even game tweaks and mods via Steam workshop that make your commander choice pretty much irrelevant, like the all units unlock mods, if you just want to focus on the game.

I can't say I really care for the unlock stuff they've done in the game though.

I just started running the Pepperidge Farm map with the Autohotkey script so you can leave it on over night, while at work, etc and get home to collect all your bulletins/commanders. Works alright, still dislike the whole system though.

Reddit has a post showing some bits added to the game files in the Feb 4 patch that suggest we're gonna have customizable commanders soon, possibly along with an in-game currency..
Thanks!

I'm finally trying out Rome... I've been holding off for ages. I still have Alea Jacta Est to play, which is much more up my alley, but I figured I'd give this a try. I can justify $15 if this is somewhat decent, but the truth is that Paradox and AgeOD have ruined all other historical simulators for me.

Yeah they finally patched COH2 into something enjoyable, it took awhile though. I just wish they would go back and fix the UI but I doubt it will happen. I will never log the kind crazy hours I put into COH1 but it scratches the itch once in awhile.

I can't say I really care for the unlock stuff they've done in the game though.

Well I will say that Rome II is a hell of a lot better now then it was at release.

So is CoH 2, actually. I was pretty down on it when it came out, but after picking it back up again recently I've had a lot of fun with it. It's got balance issues for people who play online multiplayer (fackin Germans might as well have battlemechs and lasers), but if you're just a comp stomp kind of person it's pretty good with the Western Front armies expansion.

Well I will say that Rome II is a hell of a lot better now then it was at release. Even the FPS problems have been cleaned up, and mods now work properly across the board. Doesn't have the same feel as Shogun2 which disappoints me still but it's good enough I'm on a domination campaign.
