Out of the Blue

Happy birthday DOOM, as the game that so many of us love first launched on this date 21 years ago, making it legal to drink in any state. I was just fooling around with the seminal shooter recently, but was frustrated by the inability to shut off vertical mouse movement, a standard feature of DOS mouse drivers that we've lost over the years. A little poking around lead me to this thread with a procedure on how to address this in DOOM II which I am going to check out and hopefully wipe out some cacodemons.

I still remember heading over to Floppy Joe's Software RENTAL in College Station, seeing the shareware Doom on display (which had just come out), going back to my dorm, getting floppies, then going back to get a copy of the shareware to play. Rockin' on the 386-33MHz. Good times!

What are you using as the client Blue? I doubt the original .exe works with Windows, but thats just an assumption.

For convenience I picked up a copy on Steam, which seems to work fine, except for the vertical mouse dealie. I may get inspired to pick up one of those more modern ports again though, as while I am not a graphics whore, the 320x200 resolution of the original is pretty horrible on a big monitor.
I can't stand the pixels anymore. I like Doomsday Engine: http://www.dengine.net/ ...

I love the higher resolution, dynamic lighting, mouselook and all the other things that perk it up, but I seem to have a real problem with various incompatibility issues and glitches adding on model packs and the like.

That said, I still own my copy of THE ULTIMATE DOOM, so happy birthday, game that gave me so much pleasure.
Yeah. I still haven't seen any other projects that are better or the same so far.

Holy shit, what a fucking tool. Over four fucking dollars.

I mean, I'd have complained too, but after they offer to give you the four bucks back, what more do you want?

Even completely useless and "we have nothing to do anyway" city officials would go "What the fuck is this dude whining about? Four fucking dollars??"

As the number 3 ranked Doom player in the greater DC area (well, for a few weeks anyways and mostly due to luck) let me tell you, you want that vertical mouse action and you need to make that forward and backward mouse movement work for you. It makes you considerably harder to hit when you're zigging and zagging all over the place.

I don't have a woman and baby goats (oh, the human type -- children). I just don't have the time and energy like I used to. I am struggling to keep up online. I need to retire, but have a long way to go (hint: I was still in high school when DOOM 1 shareware came out and couldn't play it on my IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 10 Mhz desktop PC!). DOOM got me addicted when I got my custom built 486 DX2/66 desktop PC. I even made two/2 DOOM II mod(ification)s: http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html ...

I just learned about Brutal Doom a few weeks ago! It's an absolute blast to play, I love the "fatalities", the death animations, all of the enemies are far more deadly, the pseudo-3d improvements, the Duke3d kick and the F-key. Great mod!

Any of the new ports should be good, although Ive always prefered Zdaemon to anything else. As for the vertical mouse dealie Im not sure I get what you mean. You are not talking about mouse look but 'moving' forwards and backwards when pushing or pulling the mouse right? (If thats it that is easily disabled in Zdaemon)

Yes, that's what I meant... Old DOS mouse drivers had separate values for vertical and horizontal sensitivity, and setting the vert to zero was how to stop unwanted forward and back movement when aiming left and right with the mouse.

I thought I remembered that was an option in some of the ports... that's probably the way to go.

It's well worth it to grab jDoom or whatever the other one(s) are. They just play better as well as looking better.
