Path of Exile Boasts 7M Players

Grinding Gear Games announces a milestone for Path of Exile, saying their action/RPG has attracted more than seven million registered players since it launched over the summer. They cite a recent influx of new players following their launch in Taiwan and a positive reception for the Forsaken Masters expansion. Here's word: "Much of the game's ongoing success is due to the acclaim of its latest expansion, Forsaken Masters, as well as Grinding Gear Games' steadfast devotion to keeping Path of Exile updated with new content, which includes a new expansion every few months. Boasting a wealth of new and engaging content, Forsaken Masters has been "extremely well-received" by both new and existing players of Path of Exile, bringing the worldwide total of registered players to well over seven million. Path of Exile also saw a record-breaking number of concurrent players within the past month, reaching a peak of 154,000 players online simultaneously."

Oh ya, they have a timer that resets the zone if you don't enter it for 8 minutes.

It does take some familiarity as there's certain zones you'll wanna pop back in asap, others that have portals that it doesn't really matter. But that was something they tweaked much in beta and 8 minutes is more than enough (as long as you know the timer exists).

I'll give it another shot, but 8 minutes is awfully short to portal back to town, sell your shit, and get back. I was up to level 20-something, and it happened to me 3 times in a row, and I just didn't relish the thought of having to replay each level 2-3-4 times in order to progress.

Yeah that was really lame. I would get interrupted by the kids and then go back to have the entire level reset. It was something ridiculous like 5-10 minutes. I couldn't stand the desyncing either, last time I played they still hadn't fixed it over a year later. Between the generic combat and those things it just wasn't a good game. They got the build side of things right and everything else was just meh.

Blizzard should hire those dudes though, they just need access to better QA and programmers.

Put 30 hours into the beta but haven't been back. Was too annoyed by being gone from a level too long to sell my stuff and having that level reset.

Not sure what you mean JD. The vast majority of PoE's population are in the 4 month leagues, the standard and HC leagues tend to be used as experimentation and something to do when the 4 months are in transition.

I have all my wealth and high chars in HC, but only ,load them up on new season tree resets to get a feel for how I'll plan the builds.

I like PoE. The materia system took some getting used to, but it does add a ton of depth and customization. My beef? The drops. D3 drops a legendary every 5 minutes, but PoE is 2x stingier than D2. At least low-mid level uniques/gems are obtainable through trading - they're very cheap in standard league - so the game is a lot of fun to someone who just wants to blast through the 3 act campaign on Normal and Cruel by themselves.

PoE's writing/story (or lack thereof) is also 10000000000000000000000000000x better than D3's.

2x? Try 50x

Plus the legendaries you get are usually far below your level.
My level 71 Maruader has to rely mainly on generous friends who give him good loot and crafting to get anywhere. Thankfully, that crafting system is very easy to exploit, since I have a chest armor piece with 6 slots (4 linked and 2 linked) that has 1200+ armor thanks to OCD-leveling tweaking.

Were it not for that crafting system being so beautifully broken, I don't know if I'd still be playing since the drop rate is so abysmally bad.

How is it broken? Crafting seems like one of the game's stronger points.

Path of Mehxile. Great build depth but boring combat. It was free so no complaints but not going back any time soon.

That's how I felt about it. Haven't had any urges to play it in a long time. It's just boring and, honestly, it lacks any kind of character. It feels incredibly generic.

I find the combat pretty interesting now. Good variety of monsters, and lots of variations of rare mobs and totems and such that convey all sorts of different powers to packs. Low level may not be terribly interesting, but once you're dealing with maps that have a variety of effects on them, with monster effects on top of that, the combat can be pretty challenging.

I'd like for there to be better combat animations and such, but that stuff takes a lot of work. I'd rather they keep focusing on adding more interesting content and new mechanics to the game since I really doubt they have the resources to do both.

The game has improved massively since beta. I picked it up again during the last 4-month league, and I'm playing the current league now as well. It's really the best ARPG out there right now IMO.

So we see 150K was hit recently, has anyone come up with some dirty math in how you can somewhat figure out the active player base based on concurrent users?

As we know the 7 million is a joke, I played and enjoyed the game in beta, so I'm one of 7 million, but come on... Tons of crap FTP can say numbers like that.

Played it a bit in beta... and it didn't float my boat, although I did find their skill system intriguing. (I can't really get into ARPGs like Diablo, where one constantly kills waves of mobs)

That said... I'm glad they are doing well, and wish them the best, especially over sell-outs like Blizzard.

Aside from the rocky start of the new season with the op beyond mobs and terrible rewards (which made people think "Invasion" all over again), they fixed it well enough that this season is turning out to be one of the best with all the other improvements and additions - strongboxes, map drops, forsaken masters/crafting, build diversity back in style, etc.

As a long term player it does get frustrating getting dozens of characters to high-level endgame and virtually never getting great end-game unis or drops (I get 99% of my stuff self-found or bought with farming for the chaos recipe), but it's immensely more satisfying when one does, and doesn't stop builds from progressing further - just slower.

As for the "get back in after being away awhile", I've built the builds int he offline skill and zip it up in case I ever need to reference it on the old trees.
Yours truly,

Axis
