Capture Added to Star Citizen Arena Commander

The Roberts Space Industries website announces that they've expanded the Arena Commander multiplayer module for Star Citizen with a CTF-inspired Capture the Core mode. Word is: "This mode is very objective based, and players will do best to focus on protecting their core, escorting their-core carriers, and taking down anyone who has stolen their core. When choosing a ship, it is not only toughness one should keep in mind, but a ship’s respective speed. Different ships can serve different roles." Thanks Massively.

Stupid Chris Roberts can't conjure anything starting from scratch.

Not to mention dragon age 2 was not an action game, the physics and combat in that game is simple by comparison to any space shooter or FPS.

RPG's tend to have easy to engineer combat systems compared to real time games because the combat is mostly scripted/automated. Using RPG's as a benchmark is awful because they are one of the easiest genre's to make in terms of combat style because it's passive and non interactive 99% of the time.

Because that's how long the hangar has been out now. Instead of progress we've seen the opposite where more stuff has been broken than fixed (like multi GPU support which actually used to work fine and has now gone with the wind and no comment by the devs whatsoever when it will be fixed). But, yay, we got towels and fish! Awesome!

And more ships. And another (somewhat) playable module.

No. I'm using the objective observation of past and current module releases as a prediction of what will happen with regard to future module releases. It's what we call empirical evidence.

And again you undergo a personal attack because he has more patience than you. If you feel burned by the project then next time don't invest over $1k blindly.

Well, you bet. Chris Roberts is never ever going to get any more money from me up front. Only for finished product releases. I have quite considerably contributed to help this project get off the ground. Now it needs to fly on its own.

I'll easily get my money back by the way. I've recently eBay'ed one of my lesser LTI ships as a test balloon to see what kind of money I would get. Well, I got almost twice than what I paid originally and this was only an add-on ship, not a package of which I will also eBay some when the time feels right.
So my $1K was a great investment and I'll end up with more in the bank than I had before I backed. Cool beans.
Thank you, Chris Roberts for all the retarded hype!

Popcorn

I hear the 100 million goal will be for civilization to start refuring to time as pre-Star Citizen and post Star Citizen, fuck all this silly BC (before Christ) and AD (after Death) shit!

That would require way more than 100 million. Also, it would be called BCR and ACR, as Chris Roberts would obviously have it refer to himself rather than SC.

Finally, AD stands for Anno Domini, not After Death. Christ did not die in the year 0.

As for the update itself, CTF in Space might be cool, but it honestly seems like one never-ending escort mission from the description of it?

Arena Commander looks to be shaping up similar. Another half-assed module that will shortly be abandoned for the "next big thing" (= reveal) a.k.a the FPS Module, Planetside Module and Social Module, each of which will also be abandoned half-assed for the next following one.

So in the end we're gonna have a bunch of HALF-ASSED modules to "play" with for what will then be considered the release version one day. I can hardly wait!

The hangars are being remade using PBR, just like a lot of the ships are currently being remodelled to improve their fidelity. Physics have been improved several times and CIG is working on the flight controller.

Your expectations for an alpha are clearly unreasonable.

Probably but when they release something then that's what I judge something by... and first impressions are everything. I know alpha.. and I know i shouldn't do it, but my brain refuses to listen.. first impression is what I remember, and my first impression of a game being "vomit inducing FOV and flickering" are what I base my judgment upon...

It's alpha. Let me enlighten you on what that means....oh hell, I don't want to bother explaining it to you so I'll just give you the wiki page so you can read it yourself. Make sure to read both the Alpha and Beta stages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Alpha

But if you failed to comprehend, I'll break it down for you.
Alpha = features.
Beta = bug fixes.
Therefore, Hangar/AC not fixed because they are in alpha.
Is every bug complaining moron seeing the connection here?

I've implemented it myself for my own 3D engine/application. Took less than a day, and I had to deal with substantial obstacles that these guys would not have to. For them it should take one programmer a few hours if he knows what he's doing, otherwise a few days tops. Dealing with bounds issues should be trivial given the extent they've modeled everything.

But then again we are talking about guys who, more than 3 months after the release of their massively delayed DFM/AC/POS still require users to 1) manually disable SLI and 2) hand-edit XML files if they want to use a TM Warthog. Oh, and nevermind that it controls like crap, walking around in the hangar is vomit-inducing, etc.

Maybe several months of programmer time would be a more realistic estimation for them. I predict TrackIR support sometime in 2016, assuming they don't switch engines.

I'm sure they have more important things to focus on than support for a niche device owned by a few thousand gamers worldwide.

What DangerDog said. They should really focus on a few very elemental issues like:

- Make keys rebindable goddammit
- Add multi GPU support - People with Crossfire or SLI are still SOL unless they disable one GPU
- Add TrackIR support
- Increase the default FoV of the hangar from the sickness inducing "55" to at least "75" or higher. I don't even want to know how many backers this project has pissed off so far because people were vomiting after two minutes in the hangar.
- Add at least some more basic graphics fidelity customization options. At the moment (without manually editing ini/cfg files) you can only change resolutions and set the game to 'Very High' or 'High' etc.
- Work on the shitty graphics quality of the hangar. The ship models look mostly fine but everything else in the hangar sucks. The lighting is way off, textures flicker due to a lack of AA and AF and so on and so on.

You know, polish what you have and don't dump new shit on the pile of old broken shit. Not a good recipe. One very famous game that failed because of this (among many other factors, of course) was Star Wars Galaxies where they kept dumping new content on top of a broken base game. Not good. Share this fate, you must not.

Count me as someone who got motion sickness in the hanger. And I was able to play Mirror's Edge without getting sick. I traditionally have a cast-iron stomach. There's something about the FOV and all the little rubber-banding physics views that just makes it too much for me.

I started hanger and got sick within 5 minutes.. and the hangar looks absolute SHIT to boot. Physics are crap, and flying in Arena feels shit. What excuse is "It's an alpha" .. this has been this way ever since the hangar released, and Arena is out for months too. Nothing was fixed regarding any of these issues. This game is like the opposite of active development. Everything takes forever and nothing gets really done.

There is so much still missing here that I am starting to regret my pledge of 60$... I should have backed Elite instead.. ;/

Also the Irony of a "PC ONLY" game with a FOV of 55 is.. beyond words. Developers that do this intentionally need to be put in a dark damp cave for life.

Very true. I've heard of that from both Nvidia and AMD, but I'm unaware of any instances from TrackIR. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened; I've just never heard of it. Sorry, but adding modes to the arena does not seem to be moving this game closer to the very long list of goals that it has. I understand not wanting modellers to sit idle while you are programming, but is RSI seriously telling me with this that their programmers have nothing to do but add modes to the arena? Seriously?

I'm sure they would say something like "it was a quick and easy addition" I think they should focus more on making the basic combat simulation better like Elite Dangerous did. If they want to throw some resources at something how about TrackIR support, it adds a new dimension to these types of games where once you play with it enabled you can't play without.

Right now there are people trying to hack it into Arena Commander but it's just that a hack and you can only "freelook" you can't fire weapons while using TrackIR.

Maybe they're fighting against some brick walls in the CryEngine and it's putting entire teams in a waiting pattern. I think someone posted about how they seem to be more focused on making demos for the next game convention than really going head first into development.

They probably only have a handful of people that are really capable of working at the code level of CryEngine.

Shouldn't that be the responsibility of the good people at TrackIR? I mean, if they want to sell the things they should be supporting them in every game they can.

TrackIR has a SDK that developers can use to hook their code to the TrackIR hardware. The SDK has been out for a long time, and no software company lets TrackIR people play around in their raw code (unless they are total buffoons). So the implementation of TrackIR must come from the RSI programmers imbedding the code hooks provided by the SDK into their code to allow functionality. That's on them, not TrackIR...
