Firefly Online Trailer

A new If I Were a Captain trailer offers a first look at gameplay from Firefly Online, the upcoming Unity-engine MMOG based on Firefly, the cult-favorite science fiction series. The accompanying description indicates they are accepting signups for the game, but that demand overwhelmed their host, and they are in the midst of transitioning everything to Amazon, so none of the included signup links work for now. Here's the refresher they offer on plans for the game: "Players take on the role of a ship captain as they hire a crew and lead missions, while trading with and competing against millions of other players like themselves. Much like the crew of Serenity, the Firefly-class transport ship featured in the original show, players must do whatever it takes to survive in the Verse: find a crew, find a job and keep flying."

I'm pretty sure any modern phone or tablet could run X-COM just fine.

In fact, it does.

Didn't anyone else notice the for PC, mac and tablets and phones. How on earth is anything made to run on a tablet or phone going to be deep?

A tablet or phone is just a device. Touchscreen interfaces are pretty limited, sure, but they work fine for specific genres. Fallout 1 and 2, for example, would work fine on a tablet since the mouse-based UI and gameplay translates well to touch-based.

how about them having small screens, limited memory and processors? I know they've gotten stronger but its nowhere near a desktop processor.

I feel like you're confusing "depth" with "pretty graphics." A deep game doesn't need to look good. Gameplay has nothing to do with presentation. The original X-COM looks like crap but has tons of depth. I'm pretty sure any modern phone or tablet could run X-COM just fine.

I explained it poorly the point was, please name a game that is made for tablets or smart phones that is "deep". That market simply wants quick simple games. When I hear a game is being developed to work on desktops and smart phones I generally assume its going to smart phone style of quick and easy but not too much to hold my attention.

KOTOR1 runs on my iPad 2 without any issues.

Honestly, that still doesn't mean it will be POS. Sure a POS from a technology standpoint. The "thing" is, they are getting the cast to do the voice overs, and are said to be hiring good writers.
Firefly Online will be more of an interactive episode story. IF they can keep new creative stories rolling out it could be an interesting experiment in a new medium of story telling.
Did you not watch the trailer? I'm saying it will be a piece of shit based on the empirical evidence. I mean, wtf is with the isometric bullshit? Most mods are higher quality than this.

I'm waiting for the Firefly mod for Star Citizen.

You really have false hopes if you think this game, with social aspects, based on a licensed property ten years dead, will need your desktop processor.

Also, ftl and xcom work wonderfully on tablets.

Maybe this would have been acceptable if they released it back in 2002. But seriously this is gonna suck. You'd think Fox would actually want to make some really good money off of this IP but apparently not. Goes to show you can't fix stupid.

Pre-purchase now to help Netflix buy the rights from Fox and start working on season 2.

It's been 10 years. Everyone's... aged... I'd be more on board with an animated series or something along those lines.

This looks better suited to a single player game. And this comes from someone who loves MMOs.

First thing that popped into my mind is "sci-fi survival". I mean, that's the entire point of the setting. It'd be kind of cool to roll with that.

Never quite got the obsession with this show some people have.
Sure, it was pretty good, and I enjoyed the movie, but man, some of the fans are worse than Star Wars or Star Trek fans. Or even Lord of the Rings fans, for that matter.
Firefly was not the second coming of Sci Fi.

Or it could be one giant POS. If I was a betting man I'd put my money on POS, but my hopes are dreams are on the former.

Let me guess, browser based and using the Unity Engine - complete POS.

Why would Fox let a bunch of idiots like this mess up a great IP?

I thought it was pretty obvious Fox doesn't think it's a good IP, considering they've shelved it for years now...

I love Firefly but this game looks utterly shit. It looks like something that would have been released about 15 years ago. Fuck you Fox.
