PC Gaming Alliance Gives Up, Changes Name

A new Open Gaming Alliance website is live as a new home to the organization formerly known as the PC Gaming Alliance (thanks GamePolitics). The PCGA was originally formed in 2008 with a stated goal of helping to reverse a trend where PC game sales were falling, but in their explanation of the name change they seem be admitting failure and moving on, saying that "as the PC is no longer the most dominant gaming form factor" they will now also embrace mobile gaming. Here is word on their new mission:

As the market for digital games grows on a variety of mobile platforms and as the PC is no longer the most dominant gaming form factor, the PC Gaming Alliance, (PCGA), a nonprofit corporation dedicated to driving the worldwide growth gaming, is pleased to announce the name of the organization has been changed to Open Gaming Alliance, or OGA.

No no no no... The PC is the largest gaming platform for real games that are actually worth playing! If I wanted the childish, mind numbing boredom of mobile-based crap like Candy Crush, or the dumbed-down, button-mashing, repetitive tripe that is made for consoles, I wouldn't game on a PC.

The rise of other platforms only clearly shows that the collective intelligence of the Sheeple population is in fact devolving back into single-celled organisms.

PC is the Master Race, all others must kneel, motherfu**ers.

Yup, GTAV and RDR, certainly not "real games" nor "worth playing." Anyone that touches another platform must kneel in front of people that only have PCs.

Do you listen to yourself? Do you hear how ridiculous it sounds? Do you understand that it makes you sound like you still live with your parents? You accuse console games of being childish, but you make the most childish post I've seen here all day.

So you play indie games exclusively, and have never, ever bought a triple A title? Cause those start on the consoles and get ported over.

Millions of iPhone and Android owners took to the streets in celebration, all of them chanting a variation of "Gaming Nirvana has come! Rejoice and sing praise to the Open Gaming Alliance."

Oh wait, none of that actually happened, because the whatthefuckever gaming alliance has never actually done a single fucking thing.

I'm glad they're finally dead though, so Blue can stop reporting about this group of useless asstards. The guys who did the Areal kickstarter had more legitimacy than Epic's bullshit circle-jerk club.

What I really don't understand is why they don't claim success, and keep going. PC gaming has had steady growth since the PCGA started in 2008. Yes much of that has come from free to play, but other sectors of PC gaming have grown as well.

It's not a problem. The PC platform is anti central-planning and for good reason: central planning too often doesn't work. The very continued existence of the ~32 year old platform is testament to more or less free market forces.

The PC gaming market is a shining example of market capitalism at work and producing a wide variety of superior products. We've never had it so good.

Because 65M Steam users are not dominant enough? Sounds more like these guys are from the "Make PC's into consoles or make them die!" alliance...

Sounds like some neighborhood gaming group that tried to grow bigger than its small town roots.

Besides, since the NES, who really has thought that PC Gaming attracted more people than consoles? Sure, for a while in the mid-90's at the transition of cartridge to CD-ROM there may have been more for a while (likely due to the cultural phenomenon that was DOOM), but consoles have always been an easier entry point than computers because of their specific focus and simplified controls and attachments to large TV's instead of small monitors while promoting multiplayer much better before the internet came around, as well.

Exactly! They had a mandate and objectives and failed to meet those objectives. Now they will change their name and target another platform (mobile) with the same objectives and mandate but reworded and a new name that they've announced lol. Don't they realize what they did?! Since marketing was what was missing from the PC market, lets just say this PR blunder explains why they were'nt successful.

And anything but profitable... unless you make the most horrible mobile grind timer pay to win garbage possible, and those things aren't games...

Well, guess PC gaming is screwed now. What will we do without the PCGA?! Might as well shut down Steam, GOG, GamersGate, Green Man Gaming, Gamefly, GetGames, Origin, Uplay, etc.

I don't think anyone would really complain about shutting down Uplay.
