Stronghold Crusader 2 in Beta; New Trailer

Stronghold Crusader 2 is now officially in the beta testing phase, as Firefly Studios prepares for the recently announced September 2nd release date for the siege warfare sequel. There's a new update on the game's official website with the news, along with the E3 2014 trailer "with fresh footage of the game at beta, including many of the new features that set Crusader 2 apart from the original game." Here's more on the game's beta status:

The game is essentially finished with all our core systems in place including co-op, unit abilities and dynamic events like the tornado and locust swarm. Self-publishing comes with its own set of challenges but one of the great advantages is that we can release when we are ready, when the bugs have been squashed and the game is worthy of the Crusader name. After taking the game to several public shows over the past nine months we are very happy with the game’s feel. The team has been tweaking areas of gameplay such as unit balance and castle destruction in direct response to feedback received at these shows and it has made a huge difference. Players are telling us it feels like the original Crusader in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay and just hearing that is hugely encouraging.

The whole team feels as though we have managed to make a game that expands on the original Crusader without changing what people found so enjoyable about the original. It is mission accomplished on that front and we still have time for a lengthy beta period to polish everything off before launch. Having to be so vague about our release date, at least until recently, was frustrating but we only wanted to give a specific date once we knew the game would be finished and up to the kind of standard players expect. Soon there will be a great Stronghold game available on Steam, one we can’t wait to get into the hands of players.

Seeing the video above, I suddenly remembered Rise of Nations was out on steam...although checking the boards, it sounds like it's a bit of a mess right now.

Stronghold was awesome when it was sprite based. Unfortunately Firefly Studios has not gotten the 3D graphics department down yet and it lacks just about everywhere. Honestly, Age of Empires 3 still looks better than this with animations and physics.
It's like Firefly Studios has yet to acquire a "modern" graphics engine to build their games off of.

I think after they made their f2p game they completely forgot how to even make proper games anymore. Lets look at the thumbnail above... what do we see... same old Castle gate system that is a single point of a failure (Destroy it, huge hole...), same old tower system that creates completely illogical tower constructions atop walls (no door on wall level, no cover, no wooden elements to protect archers and troops, no roof on the gate tower....), still no control where the tower fins are on (which side) so you can not create multi level wall defenses without severely gimping yourself if the outer wall falls. Still same old "military building" integration in walls and the same resource storage system that does not sit in a proper building with proper management and logistic systems. And still a single granary....

Seriously, look at the video and tell me, what is different to previous Stronghold game? Everything looks identical except for the textures... and the walls even have the same glitches for gods sake (huge clipping issue in the THUMBNAIL ,p)

Sigh... so much hope I had for Firefly Studios, but this.. this is just so lazy.

All I see is the same gameplay from all other Stronghold games... to put it in kind words... this game seems incredibly boring.

To be more frank
1) Horrible animations (AGAIN?)
2) Still build 5 of one kind buildings instead of 1 large one with upgrades and modular structure
3) Still grid based and still everything in orderly 90° rotation steps aligned (which destroys immersion imo ,p)
4) Fights lack any kind of impact or oomph, same for catapults and wall collapses. You want to see how to do it right? Total War: Medieval 2 . If a piece of wall collapses it's an event you can not overlook or not notice, if thousands of tons of stone crumble the earth should quake, dust should form.. everything should be in chaos.

Or basically, yeah, it's stronghold crusader 2... and it does nothing better or worse than Crusader 1.. and that's not enough to get my money anymore. And I was a HUGE stronghold fan once

I was a fan of the original, but between the poor reception of SH3 and their attempts to make a F2P model, I will have to take a wait and see approach. Video looks good though.
