I understand waste, its annoying but is it really more than just annoying? There are plenty games that download 25 gigs worth these days. It's really the new "3 disc" game.

netnerd85, it's all about the size of the download because of the waste of bandwidth on uncompressed audio files.

Complaining about audio files. How great does your life have to be where that is the biggest problem you face during the day.

It's not hard to say if they were wrong. Try decoding MP3 or FLAC and watch how much memory and CPU power it takes. It's close to NOTHING. This uncompressed audio is total nonsense. Even on the best equipment, people who declare to have a perfect sense of hearing cannot tell the difference between a good mp3 encode (lame 320 kb/s cbr or vbr -v0) and uncompressed audio in scientific studies. It's been proven often, just check google. So this is total waste of space for no reason.

Holy smokes, they shipped 35GB of uncompressed audio??

That is just a mind-bogglingly epic engineering fail. Makes me wonder what other incredibly poor judgement calls they made in developing this game...

If they used any kind of sane audio codec, playing back the compressed audio would consume LESS computing capacity due to savings in memory bandwidth.
Ultimately they were concerned about the performance impact on dual-core machines. It's hard to say if they were wrong or not.

Eh, been looking to pick up Crysis 3. 12 bucks seems like a good price.

the uncompressed audio in titanfall isn't the issue. i wish that more games had uncompressed audio like the blu-rays of console games often have. it should still be an optional download, not forced, but having high quality audio IMO is never a bad thing.
Most console games use compressed audio, including the current-gen consoles. There's no reason not to compress; the overhead is minimal (especially since consoles get dedicated decoders), and the space savings are huge. Meanwhile no one is going to be able to tell the difference between a 256Kb AAC/OGG file an a raw PCM file, so uncompressed audio vs. smartly compressed audio is a massive waste. This is the same reason games don't ship uncompressed textures anymore.

Now to be fair it's possible to harm quality with compression. But outside of handheld games where they get a little too stingy on space, I can't immediately recall anyone who shipped a PC/console game with overcompressed audio.

the issue with titanfall is not that it's uncompressed, it's that it's all 5 languages of uncompressed. so 5x the space of just english. shitty thing is, i haven't figured out how to even change the language if i wanted to, hearing all the inane chatter in french or spanish could be cool IMO.

still a fun game if you like the oldschool feel of arena shooters, the wargames level in the new expansion is very tron-like

The audio is intermixed into the multiplayer levels, there's a bunch of background chatter of the cannon fodder ai soldiers. I agree though, it's insanely sized and I wish they would have a mega-compressed audio version to install as well.

Nice try, EA. call me when Titanfall is $10, or when you've shrunk the install to a reasonable size. They bothered to patch in 144mhz monitor support, why is there no option to rip out the uncompressed audio?
