Far Cry 4 Announced

Ubisoft officially announces Far Cry 4, saying the open world first-person shooter sequel is coming to Windows, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, and PS3 on November 18th in North America and November 20th in other territories. The Far Cry website is already offering preorders, which include a free upgrade to the Limited Edition. They promise more details at E3, and in the meantime, here's the announcement, which confirms the Himalayan setting revealed earlier this year by Eurogamer:

Today, Ubisoft announced Far Cry 4, an open-world, first-person shooter that delivers the most expansive and immersive Far Cry experience ever. Far Cry 4 will be available November 18 in the US and November 20 in the EMEA territories for PlayStation 4® computer entertainment system, PlayStation® 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system, Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC.

Development on Far Cry 4 is being led by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with Red Storm Entertainment, a Ubisoft studio, Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai, and Ubisoft Kiev.

In Far Cry 4, players find themselves in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king. Using a vast array of weapons, vehicles and animals, players will write their own story across an exotic open-world landscape.

“Following the success of Far Cry 3, we wanted to take the franchise to the next level and create a game that will surprise players and exceed fans’ expectations,” said Dan Hay, Executive Producer. “Given the unique setting, we feel Far Cry 4 will stand out as a top first-person shooter and we’re eager to reveal more about the game in the coming months.”

Customers who pre-order Far Cry 4 receive a free upgrade to the Limited Edition which includes Hurk’s Redemption, a series of three action-packed single-player missions featuring the popular character Hurk from Far Cry 3’s DLC. The Limited Edition also includes Hurk’s signature harpoon gun called “The Impaler”. The pre-order is now available at all major retailers.

I still haven't installed Far Cry 2 that I got for free. LOL. I also still need to resume Crysis 1!

Thanks jdreyer for the video link. It makes me realize just how "from the future" Crysis was at the time. I loved the game to bits when it came out and never understood how anyone could say a bad word about it.

Some of the closer textures look better in FC3, but overall Crysis looks better, especially water effects and distance detail.

Check out comparison screenshots here.

Check out video (watch in 1080P) here.

FC3 is truly an example of the compromises devs have to make in order to make a multiplatform game.

I was sorely disappointed in how consolized FC3 was for PC. The visuals were sub par and the controls were irritating. Which is a shame because the story and advancement system really had me interested. But I just couldn't keep playing.

Also, Uplay is now a deal breaker for me. I already have steam, thanks - I don't need steam AND origin AND uplay AND whatever the hell comes next to serve as yet another waste of resources "hoop" I have to jump through to get to my game.

Subpar visuals? What exactly do you consider "par"? FC3 looked and ran great on PC. It controlled fine as well with M/KB. What specifically did you dislike about them?

Looked great? Nah, good maybe. It's no Crysis (2007).

It sure was better (2014.)

Characters and textures are better in FC3, but the foliage is better in Crysis. I always felt FC3 looked like you were walking through an entire jungle made up of plastic plants.

Ubisoft is normally pretty good with their PC port regardless of the amount of platforms the game is developed for. Ass Creed, Splinter Cell were pretty good looking games on the PC imho.
Far Cry was awesome too however I was pissed they cut down on the graphical fidelity on the finished game compared to their E3 reveal gameplay video.
I fully expect the 2014-E3 Far Cry 4 reveal video to look mind blowing and than the finished game look a little less mind blowing when it ships.

Ugh, already sick of this 5-platform support crap. New generation of consoles comes out, and we're still being held back by 10-year-old hardware. What's the deal?

Exactly what it's been like to be a PC gamer the last 10 years or so. PCs still being held back even by this "new generation of consoles".

Ubisoft - Strike one.
Uplay - Strike two.
Multi-platform development heavily weighted to consoles - Strike three.
Know what else tends to hold back a game? Writing off half your potential customers. How are you going to justify a AAA budget without targeting add many customers as possible?

It looks to me like the Crysis 1 screenshot's detail settings are pretty low. Everything looks awful. The FC3 screenshot is from a cutscene too... It's not a very good comparison.

I don't have Crysis installed, so I can't take a better screen, but you know, it's my opinion. I was expecting that in 2013, we should be able to make way better looking games than in 2007...

And that's fair. Everything indeed stagnated. Consoles bear much, but not all, of that blame. Far Cry 3 cost a fortune to make, and no one said "let's not make it look as good as we can!" We're at the point of diminishing returns for graphics. People need to accept that.

In no way, though, does it look worse than Crysis. It's absolutely better. Maybe not much, and the big improvements come in little areas, but it's definitely a pet peeve of mine when people claim something today is worse than something a decade or more ago, and you're the second one to do it here today. At least you have a leg to stand on because the difference isn't huge.

Held back by 2 barrel last gen systems, would have been nice all next gen based.

eh, speak for yourself - i thought the FC3 engine was damn good enough.. ran super solid with a couple ini tweaks

its most likely unchanged for the most part, given this turnaround time.. used primarily if not exclusively as content creation only

Still be even better if it weren't bound by 512 meg of unified memory.

I do speak for myself.
