Yea, there isn't a reason or game worth it to me. 360 and ps3 might be my last consoles....and I have owned almost ALL from NES and on.

The FOV alone on a 60 inch LED is reason enough never to use a console.....

The reason for FOV 50-60 (tube tvs) is no longer a reason to hold it at that. Put FOV sliders in console games. So stupid.

The newer SmartTVs have better integrated chipsets, Samsungs models from last year play Netflix perfectly fine and the interface/performance is just like on my Roku. Like anything the first generation stuff is rough and its considerably improved, more people will notice this as they upgrade TVs when old ones break and so on.

The Verge has an article about how Microsoft had a vision, and now the vision is dead.
It's somewhat lamenting that vision.

Sorry, though, but the vision was half-baked upon delivery. Yes, I think their actual dreams are great, and supposedly the TV software was actually significantly nicer than what cable boxes offer (low bar there.) It was the hardware that let it down. It wasn't easier. It didn't eliminate anything, it just offered another layer. I don't know anyone that used it, mostly because it was just a hassle. Controlling your cable box isn't fun, but controlling your cable box with another box wasn't worth the change.

First off, I hate Xbox live Gold. As a multi-platform gamer, it never seemed worth the cost. I had free access to Netflix on my Wii/U, PS3/4, smart TV, Blu-ray player, cell phone, Kindle, and PC, but I couldn't access it on Xbox because I wasn't a Gold member. Also, they went out of their way to make it a difficult process to cancel.

As for Xbox 180, they never proved the worth of the Kinect, it still does not work with a high degree of accuracy, it made inferior hardware cost 25% more than a PS4. Twice now, consumers have been made fools for buying the Kinect. Going forward, if the $400.00 unit picks up any steam, they have just fractured the installed base. Though woefully underutilized, I think it was the system's single greatest advantage over the PS4.

Unless MS can buy up enough exclusives, I still don't see this being enough. For $400.00, do you want the stronger or the weaker gaming system? Do you want the one that is (currently) restricting items behind a paywall or the one that gives you easy access to applications? Do you want the mediocre paid services or that one that gives you fantastic free games on all your platforms on a monthly basis? The system that will run at 1080P or 720P?

For a single-system gamer, I would still recommend the PS4. For myself, as a multi-platform gamer, I think I may entirely skip the Xbox 180 unless it comes down to a stupidly low price or it locks up exclusives (using money to prevent better versions of games from coming out.)

The Kinect was the system's greatest strength, but also the systems' greatest weakness, if never utilized. In that regards, MS just cast a vote of no-confidence on the Kinect. From here, E3 better blow me away because I have no idea why I would want to buy the system...
And I bought a damn Wii U after all.
Wishing the PC market wasn't so constrained by the consoles,
Ray
Everything is awesome!!!

Why is that? Among all the big corporations you should never trust, I think MS is the lesser evil at the moment.

I'm not sure by what metric MS would ever be at the top of anything, but it's more because of their humongous arrogance at E3 last year, and their subsequent arrogance afterward. See that Mehdi link that nin posted a few posts back. I mean, it just wafts off that fucking page.

The PS4 is just a tiny little part of Sony, that doesn't even really make that much money (especially not in the first few years of its life). The rest of them has been taking a beating for the past five years.

Doesn't surprise me. Their numbers were not great in the last couple of months. Can't imagine they are making a lot of profit with the PS4, material cost / retail price-ratio isn't that great either.

I don't understand this comment. If one is getting it's ass kicked, then it's by definition not healthy. So how can you have "1 console getting its ass kicked is fine when there are two healthy ones?"

He means Sony, MS, Nintendo. MS getting its ass kicked is fine, if Sony and Nintendo are doing well. But since the Wii-U is completely dead, MS struggling to sell units means Sony is the only one doing well, which is not great for the consumer.

Personally I don't think it's that immediate, though. It's good if they all switch places from time to time between generations. The PS3 was the redheaded stepchild last gen, and now they're on top of the pile, while both MS and Nintendo are tumbling. I think the market can bear that.

I agree they're likely to flip around a bit. The 360 destroyed the PS3 for years, but they ended up in the same spot, more or less.

It'd just be nice to have them neck-and-neck from the start, so neither side gets cocky and stupid. My guess is Sony is bound to do something dumb about 3 years out that lets MS catch up.

Here's the original Steel Battalion controller. They should have stuck with it instead of trying to make it work with Kinect. I was a huge MechWarrior player back in the day and would have died for a controller like this.

The Mek-Fu is a pretty interesting control interface as well, which I would have been amazing for mechwarrior. The razer artemis looked like a cool concept, but required PGI to produce a decent product with mechwarrior online for razer to actually ship the artemis. As of now MWO looks like a failure, and this one will never see the light of day.

I'm much less happy than you are. 1 console getting its ass kicked is fine when there are two healthy ones. We don't have two healthy ones. We have one DOA, one floundering, and one thriving.

Last generation was pretty ideal, to me. One kind of wasn't playing the same game, and the other two were essentially neck-and-neck worldwide.

I agree that healthy competition is necessary for a truly thriving console market, but Microsoft is now in a position where it is re-thinking the xBox1 platform and realizing that they have alienated their core audience. They need this wakeup call in order to (hopefully) get back on the right track. Just like pretty much everything Microsoft ships, it was somewhat of a disaster that will take them years to clean up.
