Halo PC GameSpy Fix Coming

A post on the Halo Fixes forum announces plans are in place to save Halo PC multiplayer support from the upcoming GameSpy services shutdown (thanks MP1st). Here's word:

I have fantastic news! It will get fixed!! You'll need to update your Halo install, but then the Lobby will work just as it always has! (Details on how to update will follow in another post when the update is ready.)

A small group has been quietly preparing for the shutdown of the GameSpy Master Server (which provides the list of Halo servers) and they are finally ready to discuss their work. The group consists of Roger Wolfson aka Sawnose (of Bungie), Btcc22 (of HAC2), Kornman00 (of OpenSauce) and myself, Technut (of PQ Clan).

As a result of their work, especially Btcc22 and Roger, Bungie will be releasing version 1.0.10 of Halo PC and Halo CE soon, which will include the fix for the Lobby!

Halo was pretty bad on PC. It was a game people had to play, especially after all the hype before it was announced it would be a console exclusive, but it was impossible to avoid the conclusion it would have been much, much better as a PC / Mac exclusive.

Not only does it still have players, it still has small but active modding and glitching communities.

It's a landmark title, I know it's not a popular opinion in these parts, but in the context of it's time and it's competitors on PC (there were none on consoles), it did a lot of things really, really well and was a coherent, solid adventure and multiplayer product.

It had some pretty cool technology and design around it. No it wasn't a m/kb railgun match like every other PC game of that era, but the one button nades/melee/zoom moveset on a controller is actually quite empowering and tactile, and with a weapon set and AI that was fun to fight and play with.

I don't think it feels great with the mouse, so still prefer the original game (Not the emulated one on 360) and thats not the ports fault, this is what you get when you tune a game specifically to one kind of input.

Well I'll be damned. Kudos to Microsoft and Bungie on this one. I'll genuinely surprised they're supporting a game this old (I wasn't even aware it still had players).

Still wish they'd port Halo 3 and Reach to the PC, alot of fun co-op.

Except that for every port of the Halo franchise to PC so far, they've somehow fucked up horribly and excluded any kind of co-op play whatsoever.

I agree, they should bring the games to PC - but get someone competent to do it please. Co-op's one of the only reasons I still dust off my consoles and boot the games up every now and then.

It's unfortunate but not that hard to understand. Halo 1 and 2 only local splitscreen co-op, on one machine -- they weren't passing any network packets around in co-op and nothing campaign-related really has to be synchronized. So putting in online co-op could easily be beyond the scope of a port job.

Well... OK, I'll give you that one. I'll admit I'm just personally pissed because (at least for Halo 1) they seemingly put a lot of development resources into making competitive online modes that I didn't care about instead of the co-op play I really wanted. I really thought it was a bad decision for the game and ruined a port I was really looking forward to ("at last - when it comes out on PC, I won't have to play co-op in split-screen anymore!").

And for Halo 2 I have no insight whatsoever into what their development mentality was for the port, other than just not giving a damn and trying to put it out with as little effort and investment as possible.

You're right though... there is quite a bit more work needed to get co-op play working over a network connection for a game that isn't designed for it originally. With Halo 3 and onwards all that functionality is at least already built in.
