Star Citizen Status Report

A new April 2014 Monthly Report on the Roberts Space Industries updates us on the status of Star Citizen, RSI's space combat game. The monthly part may refer to how it may take a month to read it in its entirety, as it offers separate updates from each studio and outsource group contributing to the project. Here's an update from the folks at [Redacted] working on the FPS module:

Speaking of combat, we have also been implementing a cover system. Soon, Citizens will be able to hunker down behind objects or lean in from behind a wall to take shots at the enemy. All of these actions combined with the variety of weapons means that there is an absolutely huge amount of animation that needs to be motion captured… and it just so happens that we are doing motion capture this week.

Moving forward with the FPS module, the team is about to begin a heavy amount play-testing to ensure everything is coming together in a way that is fun, engaging and hopefully nothing quite like anything you’ve ever seen or played before. We can’t wait to show it off and we hope that you Citizens are just as excited as we are!

And that point still stands.

yeh but what you are referring to is SP stuff, where the targets/enemies have predictable, pre-programmed movement patterns

but anyways, now its like SC 3000 or something, i guess they gonna hire Dsmart to implement all this cool shit just like he did with his bad ass games

it's not stop and play FPS for a while.

It's when you are boarding a ship to capture it, you and your friends will board the ship and have to kill the current owners of the ship and then take control of it. Killing them in FPS, inside the corridors of the ship etc.

Also, lets say you find an abandoned space station or whatever, you land your ship on it, get out walk around to explore, and another person has also landed on the other side and all of a sudden a FPS firefight breaks out as you run into each other both exploring the same station or planet etc. (or groups of players exploring together)

Ok.. that's cool and all, but what game are your friends playing when you decide to board the ship? They will be flying their own ships most likely. So everyone will need to stop and come do the boarding mini-game. I'm just trying to think of how this plays out in reality.

The friends could also be in your ship. example: The Constellation is a 4 crew ship so 3 of your friends could be flying around with you manning the turrets etc. and you guys decide to board another ship to take it.

Oh yay. I will point out that the turret/rail shooter portions of FPS games are usually the shittiest parts of the game.

Now you're telling me I get to spend unlimited hours of playing that? Where do I sign up?

who put a gun to your head to play what you don't like? you must have some shitty friends.

most will most likely have npc as crew, and yes as a previous poster was asking, the npc's will be able to help you board etc. they probably won't be as good as humans though is my guess.

Well... seeing that the game I backed during the initial kickstarter and the game as it stands now are completely fucking different beasts, I'm going to say Chris Roberts.

That aside, my point was that claiming that rail shooting, one of the most reviled fillers of FPS games of the past 10 years or more, is a huge selling point is pretty stupid.

And that point still stands.

Why would everyone else need to stop? They'd still be flying their ships or doing whatever they want outside. That's half the point (and appeal) of the game - everything's seamlessly happening in the same general instance while you're flying around space, boarding ships, engaging in FPS combat, etc.

Don't think of this as a limited, linear space sim where everyone has to be stuck doing the same thing. If anything it's more like an FPS where everyone just happens to be using these ultra-detailed, ultra-customizable spaceships as vehicles that one can get in and out of at any time.
Exactly. It's like any FPS with vehicles - Half-Life 2, Battlefield 4, Titanfall, etc - in that everything is done from the first person perspective, only you spend the majority of your time in the space ships.

Speaking of which, I finally defeated the Rebel Flagship with the Zoltan Cruiser last night. That game is tough.

If the game mechanic allows for stealthy or aggressive hostile interior ship FPS, then aggressive interior ship defenses become a priority.

I hear at 300 million you get your own 300 Spartan warrior strutting around your hangar. He won't be nude, but I'm sure it won't take long before someone mods it.

That's what you get when using FPS engine in space sim
What a waste of resources ihmo. I see two outcomes of this - first one is a half assed fps bits that will never be played, second is fps module that's actually better then space sim part due to engine specifics. Both scenarios equally depressing. Glad I'm only funded minimum to get Squadron 42 out of it.

Yeah, it would be cool if there were boarding sequences as part of Sq42. For the MP game, I too might worry about how much this might be used. If you could have AI bot marines on your ship which would join you in boarding, that might be cool, especially the bigger the ship, the more marines. However, limiting boarding to real people might make it hard to organize enough people for a boarding/repelling firefight.

I understand that you can run around in 3rd person mode now.. but if people are flying and trading... how do they expect to get people to stop and play an FPS for a while? Is there an announcement or something? Maybe you just fight ai and can go into FPS mode when you want.
