BTW, with 16GB of memory, I've turned off my paging file and have had no ill effect whatsoever on my system.

Ditto.

8GB is the correct answer, agreed. The question was way too easy

But again, as it has been mentioned at least 24937 times before, do NOT disable the pagefile, not even with 512GB of RAM!

There is a reason for this file to exist on Windows machines, keep it enabled!
Totally disagree.

The pagefile does more than only swap out data which doesn't fit into your RAM.
True, windows does lots of legacy operations on data in RAM and puts data out to page regardless if you have the room in ram. They think if it ain't broke, reuse it... so old ways of dealing with RAM are still at work.

It also untrue that the pagefile will slow down your system if you have plenty of RAM.
I know from experience that it is in fact true. Thankfully I don't have to because someone else did
In summary, in every case a page file was quicker... although in almost every case the positive difference was considered "statistically insignificant" I know for a fact that the minor differences add up very quickly over time. The benchmark also didn't use the system for 8+ hours switching programs or startup and shutdown of those programs repeatably. This is where the most noticeable difference is and shows whats going on with windows.

This is true. I've been waiting to replace my 4x4gb sticks that I got for $100 a couple years ago with a 2x8gb setup, but the prices are hovering around $30-$50 more than what I bought my current setup for.

You should really keep a small 1GB page file for rogue applications, bad drivers and so on that would otherwise cause issues.

$75 for 8 gigs, maybe high vs some other point in time. I don't find that expensive though.

I remember when ram was actually expensive.

RAM is not cheap right now. Historically it's pretty high actually.

Or that your browser and other apps can be eating up ram without any performance issue if you have the ram to do so. Then I use a 4 gig ram cache file. Sure you can get away with 4 gigs, but 8 - 12 - 16. It's just gives you so much more headroom for a few dollars more.

16GB is minimum for me but more often than not, I run 32GB. In the laptop, the desktop workstation and in my gaming machine. Combined with a fast CPU, SSD and decent GPU, the systems are always responsive.

What they fail to mention in the conclusion of the ram article is the decent improvements in load times. 4GBs is fine, but with ram so cheap might as well go 8GBs for another ~$30. I mean for game performance the order is GPU>CPU>SSD>RAM, but if you just want to shorten loading screens or smooth out area transitions (an MMO issue), on the cheap, more ram isn't a bad idea.

That site also fails to talk about games that are in the works or some of the higher end games that do run much better with 8GB or higher of Ram. And future games like Star Citizen will require 8GB and higher of Ram to run.

I personally run 16GB because I know that not only do the games require more ram and run better. The back end system Windows uses a big chunk of ram to. The system will auto allocate ram so many times just because you have 8GB of ram does not always mean the game is using all 8GB of it. Windows will always reserve ram for the system. That is what these guys fail to include In their testing.

And let’s not forget that the Video Card plays a big part in this testing too, something they also failed to include in that test. The GPU takes on a big part of those load times and performance.
