Elite Dangerous Premium Beta

Frontier Developments announces the premium beta for Elite Dangerous begins today, allowing access to a single-player build of the space combat remake for those who have backed the game on that level, saying a full premium beta build with multiplayer support will come on May 30th. For other preorder customers, they are also selling upgrades to the premium beta, but they do not bandy the term "premium" about lightly, as this carries a $150.00 price tag. They also describe plans to release one additional alpha to test travel and trading, confusingly saying this will precede the premium beta release, which we presume refers to the May 30th "full" beta. Those who wish to access the alpha can still buy in for the next two weeks, which will set you back $295.00. "The Alpha process has worked well for us. We have gradually built out the key elements of the game, first locally, with single player combat, then with a few thousand players across the internet. On 30th May the Premium Beta extends this to many thousands of players worldwide, with an increasingly rich game," explains David Braben, CEO of Frontier. "I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have played such an important role in Alpha testing, and I’m very happy that we will continue to benefit from their valuable input as they test Beta builds approximately 2 weeks in advance of release."

Man do you guys not understand the ED has been in development for years off and on? braden has been waiting for his in-house engine to caught an and the right time to show the game and that Frontier is an old studio. Plus they hade a team already set up. An That CIG a brand new studio and was hiring as they worked on the game IN pre-pre development. They have only 2 to 1 in a half year of development under way. This is not even a comparison.

Its one people need to stop. ED is in Version 3 and SC DFM is not even in any version yet to release to the community. In 3 weeks.

Need better informed expectations up in here. If no one believes me then I'll post some facts.

Ok, so it's official then, Star Citizen sucks and Elite: Dangerous is the best game ever. So why are they selling a $150 beta now where you get treated as a second class citizen for the next 6 weeks? I see these awesome videos but they're not quite $300 awesome...

Watching that Star Citizen/Chris Roberts video reminded me of the opening safety form the superbowl .... what a mistake to make.

So, when is the DFM out then?

He didn't know shit about his own game. And then they had to spend 15 minutes apparently just getting it ready to go.

Sheesh, that was just about the most inept reveal ever.

But hey, 41 million dollars sure buys a lot of pretty powerpoint slides!

Yeah, that worries me A LOT...he didn't seem to know what to say even, a lot of 'Uh's and 'Um's like he just got there, they gave him a quick cheat sheet of the slides and kicked his ass out on stage. Either he got stage fright (which is always possible though highly unlikely) or he wasn't prepared, and that does not bode well for the project.

Younger gamers should study this well as a lesson in life, really. You can have the best of intentions and big dreams, lots of money, even tons of talent bought with the money, but if you don't actually have a plan, know what the hell you're doing, actually have a plan, pace yourself - don't bite off more than you can possibly chew, and actually have a plan, then you find yourself in situations like Chris and others like Lord British, John Romero and Peter Molyneux have - promising the world and hoping that by throwing money and people at it, everything will somehow all come together like you want and like you said. The world, unfortunately for those great, self-esteem-boosting fairy-tales you were told when you were young, doesn't work that way.

Chris has been in this exact place before, with Freelancer. I know because I followed it's development very closely at the time. And back then, he had roughly the same kind of vision he has now - large, open world sandbox space sim/game/virtual life, with lots of interesting places to go to, dynamic situations happening with or without the players involvement and a huge MMO-type second release, after the single-player release, to tie it all into a big bow. For years, we watched preview after preview come out with all the same promises, the same goals. But when it came to the actual release...well... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer_(video_game)

Here's hoping against hope that history doesn't repeat itself...

When this game is done, it will be a pretty incredible game. But No one should be making a judgment call on a demo that is in very early development.

I didn't watch the whole stream, so I didn't see the crashes. But, isn't the DFM supposed to be released soon? Wasn't it supposed to be released back in December? If so, why is it not in a better state?

Not trying to nitpick, but I'm getting the perception that this project is behind schedule.

Ouch. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong. That said, the game is still a long ways off and I'm pretty sure they'll fix most of the bugs.

This was on my "watch" list until I watched that live stream. 30 minutes late starting, no ability to skip the cutscene at the beginning (when he crashed the ship and had to restart) which wasted time showing something we'd just seen again, hard-locks, windows popping up...

At this point, CR just looks inept. You always bring your most stable build, even if it doesn't have the latest bells-and-whistles, when you go to show your software off. Which means this IS their most stable build (or all they have). Not encouraging at all...

While I agree with this sentiment in general, I have to disagree when the prices are this high or rather higher than retail. In fact the high price ensures that only people who want to see the game succeed and are passionate about it apply, which would in turn mean that they would also be passionate about reporting bugs and problems.

See, I go the other way on that. If they're fanboy enough to drop that sort of change they're not going to be critical where they need to be. The devs could shit in a bowl and they'd still call it ice cream. Oh sure, there will always be some who will, but most are ponying up the dough to drink the kool-aid.

This is the problem with AoW3 atm. It's terribly unbalanced. So what the hell was the beta for? Oh right, it was the fanboys they picked from the forums to give feedback. And nary a one was critical of this stuff whereas everyone else now is. I'm not even playing the game until this stuff gets addressed.

Betas dont work that way. By the time a game hits beta, if it has any remaining major design flaws well thats that then. Its too late to save the child, as Lazarus was so fond of saying If the game sucks well then it sucks. But if its unpolished and has bugs that need ironing out, well then thats what the beta is for.
