Homeworld HD Becomes Homeworld: Remastered Edition

Gearbox Software announces Homeworld: Remastered Edition is the new title for the project previously known as Homeworld HD. A new Homeworld Remastered Edition website is home to the game, and it includes a poll to vote on which Collector's Edition of the space strategy remake is more desirable. Here's the latest on the game to explain the name change:

Crafted with the assistance and guidance of the original creators as well as the help of a passionate fan community, Homeworld Remastered Collection introduces Relic's acclaimed space strategy games Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to modern players and operating systems using the latest advances in graphics rendering technology. Homeworld Remastered Collection includes updated high-res textures and models, new graphical effects, and support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions. Homeworld’s original audio and video artists have also recreated cinematic scenes in beautiful high fidelity.

Homeworld Remastered Collection uses Homeworld and Homeworld 2’s original source audio to create a stunning new mix of effects and music. On top of that, multiplayer for both games has been combined into one centralized mode that will allow you to interact with other players like never before. This collection also includes archival versions of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic, preserving the purest form of the original releases with compatibility for modern operating systems.

Wrong. The one thing Gearbox is great at is buying old IPs dirt cheap and then squezing them for all they are worth and usually wrecking them beyond all hope in the process.

Well only if your memory doesn't go back more then a couple of years. I personally enjoyed both Half-Life expansion packs and also enjoyed the Brother in Arms games I played. Add Borderlands to the resume, pretty damn good track record if you ask me... at least on stuff they have actually made themselves.

I loved Homeworld.

I'm not paying for something I've already played though.

New ideas, new take, new IP. Yes. Repackaging old ideas and paying a second time? No.

I don't know how some of you can get excited about a cheap cash in.

I'm with you on this, or at least some options to tweak balance. This, combined with no difficulty setting, made it pretty tough (for me... admittedly I'm not very good at strategy games). I never was able to finish it, even after teaching myself to gather all resources before hyperjumping and salvaging enemy ships like crazy.

Like I said, not very good at strategy games I guess

I guess they're working on making this playable on consoles. Press "x" to win!
I remember being totally confused by Homeworld's 3rd dimension. Couldn't find the enemy in the beginning, but after adjusting to 3D battlefields, I loved it.

Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

This.

Homeworld was certainly a great game, if they make it in a nicer engine, ideally easily modifiable, and I'd be buying this.

All the hate for Gearbox notwithstanding, this sounds pretty damn excellent.

My only worry is that they're doing so much work on it they're going to price it at $30 or higher.

That's a reasonable guess given that they're having people vote on two possible versions of the collector's edition, one that costs $75 and another that costs $100. It makes me think the base price could be $30-$50.

I'm waiting to get excited until they show some impressive videos.

39 is young, you punk!

Hell, I recall 38, but not 39. 40 was like 30, anticlimactic. So I'm in my 40s now? Ok, now what. Don't feel much different from 5 years ago.

Surely they'll fuck it up some way, Creston.

You're too young to be this cynical.

I'll be 39 in a few weeks.

Playing through BL2 right now. Lovin' it. It's like BL on steroids. Great franchise.

I need to give it another try then. I loved BL1, but I couldn't get into BL2 after a couple of tries. It's been quite awhile since I tried it, so maybe I am ready now.

I bought the GotY version, and am playing as the Mechromancer on my first run through. Love that character.

BL on steroids about sums it up. I recently just finished BL2 and I swear at least three times I thought "this has got to the end" and the game just kept opening up more and more awesome levels. It should be called the 'energizer bunny game' because it just keeps going and going and going.

I think my one complaint is of course the console saves. I need a good 90m or so to rescue Roland, and twice now I've started only to be interrupted an hour in, had to quit and restart at the beginning of he Bloodshot lair. PITA.

It says right there it includes the "archival versions" of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic with modern OS compatibility. Hopefully modders can take apart the remastered versions unless Gearbox continues with their anti-mod track record as of late.

Overall it sounds a lot better than the joke that was Beamdog's Baldur's Gate "Enhanced" Edition.

Homeworld was notoriously hard to modify. HW2 was a little better but not by much.
