Asheron's Call Future Updates "Limited"

The Asheron's Call website has details on a new content update that should be live at some point today for Turbine's long-running MMORPG (thanks Gamasutra). The post includes the news that this will be the final content update for the game, though they plan on continuing to run the game as they have for the past 15 years. Here's word:
Once this next update is in the hands of the players, the updates to Asheron’s Call will be limited. We intend to fix critical bugs and continue maintenance and support on the game. While there is always a chance we will put out a small update if time permits, players should have the expectation that updates will be limited to maintenance, bug fixes, and perhaps balance iterations of February content such as the new Coliseum.

Let me reiterate that we have no plans to close Asheron’s Call. We plan to keep the game open and the servers running.

Although this change of focus is necessary for our company, we love the Asheron’s Call games and we want them to live forever. We understand that players who have been enjoying our monthly updates will be disappointed at the change to Asheron’s Call. Our long term plan is to make the game free to all active accounts. We are working on a date in the not-to-distant future where all active accounts will be able to play the game for free. Asheron’s Call and Asheron’s Call 2 will be a gift to our loyal players.

In addition, we have been working within the company to start an initiative sometime near the end of the year to allow players to run their own Asheron’s Call servers. We intend to put the call out to tech savvy enthusiasts that love Asheron’s Call to create a community for players who want to run their own Asheron’s Call servers.

Still the best MMO I have played... by far.

Old xanthro / adnan alliance here. I still fondly remember all the town wars such as AB as well as the portal runs and dungeon contests.

If only WOW didn't come along with some kiddy MMO with kiddy PVP we may still be playing decent MMO's instead of all the failed cookie cutter mundane crap we are stuck with today (grind mindless pve, grind pvp minigames - yay!).

john, what was your name om DT? I also remember that game as pure skill, me and a friend could go into towns and take em all down, but higher levels didn't mean shit, we would take down full groups way higher than us. The game was pretty amazing.
my handle was Yossarian ans friend was Rabid Assault.

I think people missed the HUGE news. Personal Servers of the Game!!!

Yep that is what I read to. That is something that needs to become a trend.

There already are, and have always been, player run servers for almost every MMO in existence. I have been playing on Ultima Online and WoW player run servers off and on since the games were released. Many of them are even better than the official servers. This is why there wasn't much reaction to this "news"....because it isn't news.

I bought this the day it came out, and played 16 hours a day on the Darktide PvP server. This game was the only MMO ever where you actually felt like a god. I would run into a town and slaughter everyone in it, loot their most valuable stuff, run to a dungeon and do the same thing, run into the next town, etc. People would see me coming and literally bow down and swear their fealty to me so I wouldn't kill them, and then I would get a percentage of any experience they earned, making me even more powerful. Then if someone bothered them they would message me, and I would come running in and lifestone spawnkill camp their harasser into oblivion. The only person on the server a higher level than me was my best friend, so there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of, it was the ultimate power trip. Unfortunately I was obsessed with the game and had to sell my account *for a nice figure* before my life fell apart outside of the game, but I still remember the days fondly.

Other than Ultima Online, there has been no greater MMO. MMO's today are nothing compared to what they used to be.

Also they are going to re-release AC2???

I actually liked AC2 quite a bit but it failed to gain traction.

Yeah, Turbine is nuts for not doing a new AC, DDO, etc.

There was a new AC, but it shut down years ago. It's amazing the original has been going so long.

Also, Turbine is busy DDO and LotRO updates. And I think they're working on Infinite Crisis?

Played the original for a couple years at launch and had a ton of fun. Loved the exploration of it. I hadn't played UO or EQ or any MMO before AC.

I tried to get back in to this game a year or two (or three) ago, but just couldn't. It wasn't so much that the graphics were so outdated, but the UI. Not being able to use the mouse was a major hurdle. Can't remember if it just didn't work or if it was setup weird, but I remember being barely able to drive.

I really want AC3.

Have not played this game in ages and I decided to sub to it for grins again. Even though I had played it for at least a couple years, I seemed to have forgotten everything. Way too much learning curve to get back into it. Great game, even if the graphics are severely dated, but way too complex.

This game on the full PVP server "Darktide" was pretty amazing.. I played it for several years and it was SUPER fun. Seriously.

I quit when the hackers became too rampant with botting and such. Sad it came to that.

I remember playing this way back when they had a "free weekend". Didn't realize it was still around.
