Maybe we don't NEED 1 gbps...

Speak for yourself. I can saturate a 10gbps connection running seedboxes alone. Seedboxes for legal, legitimate reasons. If we're going to put in all new infrastructure anyway, why not futureproof it as much as possible now with the fastest speeds we can get?

Think of it this way, have you ever said to yourself "Well, I don't NEED anything faster than a Pentium III"?

My all caps meant, "yeah, I can get by with less, but 1 gbps would sure be nice"

Nice combination of stories that the internet failed (article author using Verizon) and Verizon doubting anyone needs speed. So once Verizon gets a monopoly, they'll be going back to dialup speeds?

Maybe we don't NEED 1 gbps, but 100mpbs should be the bare minimum at this point.

We just got 30 where I live recently, and by 30 I mean 15. Or maybe 10. Usually not less than that, though, unless you use it at a time when other people are awake.

Maybe we don't NEED 1 gbps, but 100mpbs should be the bare minimum at this point. 10mbps is just godawfully slow for what the internet is used for these days. Most other countries get 2x-5x the throughput at half the price. It's ridiculous, and it's due to the fcking monopolistic positions these companies have in most regions. Then they have the balls to push through laws banning the only possible competition: muni broadband. Eat a bag of dcks, Comcast and Verizon.

Municipal broadband is the way to go. Most MUDs already have guys who know how to run and admin fiber.

I'm thinking that 2014 is the beginning of the cable tv industry meltdown. I really hope Comcast gets hit hard. Worst company in the US!

That's right. Lack of competition and consumer choice is the real problem.

Regulating ISP routers to be 'neutral' won't solve the problem but instead just perpetuate the duopoly and create government red tape to Internet services.
Perpetual debt is slavery.

What's the percentage of those people that don't realize there's no competitor to go to if they leave?

If mine up and left we'd be internet partying like it's 1995, assuming there's actually a dial up provider still around here to even do that.
