I'm kind of proud of the fact that I have never heard of "Flappy Birds" (or "Fappy Birds"!) until just now. Although the idea of making 50 grand a day makes me drool.
I never heard of Flappy Bird too until this game got popular in the news on 2/6/2014. :/

I can see done well, but how was Angry Birds a new idea given the hundreds of physics based puzzlers you mentioned?

Exactly, thank you.

I've heard of GTA5 and Angry Birds, but until now never heard of Flappy Birds or Candy Crush. But then, even though I have a smart phone, the only game I've ever played on it was Chess.

Hard to tell from his tweets if he is just emotionally fragile or if it is a marketing gimmick, I really don't care which it is. What I do know is I need to sit down and create a cheesy, addictive game and get it into the app stores. $50k a day? $850k a day? Holy Cow!

Edit: This WSJ story indicates he was having issue with his sudden fame and the trolling that comes with Internet fame.

Except for the fact that Angry Birds is a well-designed game. It has pleasing graphics, decent performance, great audio, a fantastic difficulty curve, and in general fits the mold of what a mobile game should be. Flappy Bird rips off not only an entire game concept from Helicopter but also rips off artwork from Super Mario Bros. There's no comparison. One is a new idea done well, another is an old idea that only got popular because people are ADHD-riddled and generally incapable of gauging their self-value outside of a repetitively pointless activity.

You realize Angry Birds ripped off Crush The Castle, right?

I've always contended something along those lines... It's hard to claim that Crush The Castle was the first game of that style when hundreds of 'physics based puzzlers' were popping up at the time...

But it doesn't change NewMaxx's points... It was well designed, pleasing, etc... In essence, they 'Blizzard'd' the game type...

As for Flapppy copying 'Helicopter'... I hope he's not claiming it ripped off a mobile game, because I played that genre about 14 years ago.

Candy Crush earns about $850k/day, so this isn't really difficult to believe.

Well Candy Crush is someone addictive for bored people, Flappy Bird is not even a decent app. Oh and it does have in game advertising.

Of course it has in-game advertising, that's how it makes its money.
Candy Crush is a piece of shit beyond the piece of shit this is. "Sorry, you've used all your play time for today. If you'd like to play another 10 minutes please insert $10."

Flappy Birds, though shitty, is something you can literally play for 5 seconds or 20 minutes. Which is how mobile games are most successful - because people playing them are usually doing it on the bus, or while waiting for takeout, or while their friend runs into the bathroom, etc.

Angry Birds obviously had a lot more work put into it than Flappy Bird, but I'd rather play the latter.
Angry Birds is too luck based to be interesting to me.

Also Flappy Birds doesn't have interstitial ads, a currency system, arbitrary daily goals, please rate my app pop-ups, waiting periods and all the other things that make me despise so many mobile games.

Also, althought I know fuck all about this, is there not also claims of 'copying other peoples work' in a very direct manner?

Never heard of it before this. I was more keen on that little know game GTA 5.

This is the first time that I've heard about this game.
Can someone enlightend us please on what's going on?

Or is it just a case of "simple mobile game got popular for some reason which attracted a lot of criticism"?
If that is the case, what is the criticism then?

-Guy made a really "stupid" game that is also very hard.
-Game goes viral.
-People start calling the game a fraud and sending death threats to Guy, despite the game being free.
-Guy gets tired of receiving death threats and being called a fraud. Decides to pull the app.
-Guy receives even more death threats for saying he will pull the game.

Stay classy internet.

It was an ad supported free app not a F2P app where people had to buy into anything. It was number one in both the Google Play store and the Apple App Store. $50,000 a day is easily doable by such an app.

And the app is indeed gone from both store fronts now.
