Next Car Game Makes $1 Million in One Week

Bugbear announces the Early Access to their Next Car Game offered through Steam and the Next Car Game website surpassed $1 million in sales in its first week of availability (there's also a free tech demo of the game available for those who sign up for their newsletter). They point out what a triumph this is for the demolition game which many publishers thought would crash and burn:
This is an amazing success for a racing game, especially considering our tough road to the success. Along the way we pitched the game to numerous publishers in the hopes that the game would eventually get released. Unfortunately we receive the same response all over again – there were no market for a game like ours. Come on, who would want to race and crash with such old beaters? Well, we would! Because of that we didn’t give up, but instead chose to seek crowd-funding on Kickstarter. However, we experienced another setback when our Kickstarter campaign didn’t reach the goal we were aiming for.

However, we still believed in the game, and we decided to release a playable technology sneak peek. We were literally awe-struck by the great response the sneak peek received. The pre-order sales skyrocketed, and we reached and actually topped our original Kickstarter funding goal in just week! And most importantly: the success showed us that the players believed in the game.

That's a pretty cool story. It must've been crushing to fail to get picked up by a publisher and then fail to get funded on Kickstarter. Good for them.

The problem with the kickstarter is they held back the 'real demo' once the real demo leaked via torrent (the pre-order preview). Then everyone got on board. So they kinda failed themselves unfortunately when they tried to kickstart.

They released a free tech demo that is pretty much the same as the Kickstarter one. AFAIK the only difference is that the free one lacked AI cars. Perhaps the physics gun too? The Kickstarter one is better but there's no need to go torrenting it.

Maybe this was added towards the end of the Kickstart. When I bought, I got a Steam key and could download the Early Access demo (laps, destruction derby) from Steam even though it wasn't on the Steam store at the time. I also got the extended tech demo from their site.

Well that is a common miss conception, but you see you are not paying for a beta you are preordering a game and for that preorder in return the developers let you play the unfinished version.

Meat... spot on. I figure we have about another year of having to repeat this over and over until it dies down. This is like Pre-Order + and it's all crystal clear on what is happening. Don't like it, wait. It's so super simple and there are many people that love buying into these.

Unless they've added to it, the early access honestly isn't as fun as the tech demo. Two small tracks, with less environment detail than Ultimate Carnage. I understand it's not final, so I'm just gonna let it sit. I spent way, WAY more time in the tech demo, as it oddly offers more to do than the early access game.

And I still believe they should allow for people to play the tech demo map in multiplayer as part of the full game. We'd invent our own weird game rules, they wouldn't need to do much other than tacking the map into the track list.
There are 2 race tracks and a demo derby stadium in the early access game. Each race track can be raced 12/24 or no car at all (practice mode)
I have been playing the demo derby mode with 24 cars and loving it.
The races are fun too to mix things up a bit.
I think ones it is finished it will be an amazing racing game.

I bought this in early-access on Steam. To be honest, the current offering isn't worth the approximate $25 they are asking for it. Yeah, you get a couple race tracks and a demo derby arena. There are two playable cars.

It's fun, sure, but you can literally play through all the offered content in 10 minutes, and then you are repeating.

Not sure what one would expect. you are helping them build the final product. The demo shouldn't be viewed as anything other than a taste while they work on the full game. Relax and be patient while the final product is on its way.

Well, make a spiritual successor with a name like "Badland Highways" or something. SOMEONE needs to remake that game. Oh, and while I'm wishing, a single player Mechwarrior campaign, please.

A. Well, no one is holding a gun to your head. If you know you're not someone who wants to participate in betas, then don't. It's that simple.

B. Early access makes sense for certain kinds of games, and I think this is one of them. Games where the engine is mostly done, you'll be playing the same tracks over and over anyway, and they're tweaking and adding content like cars and tracks, go for it and let early adopters give feedback. For a linear RPG like Project Infinity, it makes much less sense.

Come on, who would want to race and crash with such old beaters?

That's unfortunate to hear. One of my favorite games back in the day was Destruction Derby. And the Destruction Derby mode in the original Grid is a blast. I will say that Flatout 2 left me unimpressed, but I'll keep an eye on this.

Yeah I think that is where a lot of the confusion comes from. A lot of people look at Early Access the same way as you, even though it should be no different from Kickstarter.
Funny how getting less for the money seems more. When you kickstart a game you get nothing in return right away but still that seems like a more approved money spending practice then paying for early access but not getting all the game content and features just a taste of it.

Yeah, agreed, it is a bit of a double-standard.

In that same vein though, I would have never backed Next Car Game on Kickstarter, but seeing the product on Steam Early-Access was enough to convince me. So I feel like if you're going to offer a playable portion of the game on Steam, you should be held to a higher standard, as people are not only investing in you, but also immediately purchasing a product.

I bought Interstate '76 on GOG and built a Linux box for it solely because Play on Linux's frontend for Wine runs it so much better than the Windows version...and in native OpenGL support, too.

The only other game I've bought on early-access is ARMA 3 and DayZ, and both those offered tons of content right off the hop.
Got ya.
I got it because I wanted to help the devs to get this game made.
I also had Arma3 in early access and I know what you mean. Sadly though Arma 3 shipped without the single player element and a lot of people shit all over the game because of it.
For how much I've paid for this game if they add multiplayer support for the demo derbies I've already got my money's worth, because that mode is a ton of fun.
I am pretty sure the finished game will be a lot more than that though, hopefully they can add all the features they want and polish it up for release.

I guess I look at Early Access slightly differently. If I back something on Kickstarter, I am solely investing in the development of the game, and expect nothing in return immediately.

If I buy a game on Early-Access, I expect a certain amount of content depending on the dollar value. For "Next Car Game", I feel like there just isn't enough content to justify the $25 price tag. Still, though, I am happy to support the development of the game, as it is obviously showing promise at this stage.

It's fun to play already. Car handling could get a bit better, but as it's still in early access that's acceptable. The junk derby is a whole lot of fun, but handling makes the races a bit difficult (at least for me) Destruction is awesome in this game, stuff gets messed up real good.

Any tips for improving performance? I realise it's in an early state but this game runs real slow on my system. I'm running a 570m (equiv to a desktop 560). It's odd that Project Cars runs well for me nearly maxed out but this doesn't. It's so laggy I can hardly play it. I guess I need to run it on low.
It's the particle effects that cripple the framerate. There are a shit ton of physics calculations going on at once.

Turning them off makes the game look a lot less impressive, though

To be honest with you most Alphas offer very little from the completed game. People who pay for early access are not buying the game for what is currently being offered but pay early to help the development and get a little taste of the game being developed in return.

If you compare how much you've paid and how many hours of gameplay or enjoyment you got out of it, then clearly you do not understand the concept of early access.

In comparison Elite Dangerous Alpha currently cost 200Euros ~ $270US, what's being offered can be played though in about an hour, all single player.
I don't even want to mention Star Citizen with the $35 min price to get in the game and you get one ship sitting in a hanger and you can walk around and look at it.

So what I'm saying is, if you are looking to buy this RIGHT NOW for the content CURRENTLY BEING OFFERED, it's not worth it.
