Also the shots dont look at all "gamey" imo, there is no hint that these are taken from a game (no hud, weapons, placeholders, items , signs of interactivity in the game world.) These look like renderings from some 3D/CAD program imo.

Update to Source engine is way overdue.
Haven't they been continually updating it over the years, adding new bits of technology to it? Get rid of the damn loading screens and I'll be happy with it.
The last major upgrade that I can think of was the "Lost Coast" level for HL2.
Is this sarcasm?

That pretty much backs up what DangerDog said, no? That only lists soft particles and hardware facial animations as new features, neither as big as HDR in my opinion. The other stuff, platform support, has nothing to do with how modern the engine is.
I just found it funny that you picked essentially the first update of hundreds and called it the last major one (it wasn't even on that list). I'd say the last major one was for Portal 2, that was the last one they were calling "Source 2".

Source has evolved but the last few Source engine games I've played stick out due to their dated graphics and interface. It's a solid, fast, and reliable engine and some really good games such as The Stanley Parable use it to good effect, but it doesn't look as pretty or feel as modern as games like Crysis 3 - which isn't entirely a bad thing, Source's dated menu is a lot nicer than Crysis's nonsense.
Maybe it would be nicer if it was used in a big budget game but I can't remember the last time such a game used the Source engine. Perhaps that says it all.
Titanfall is using Source. They've said they will consider opening it up for modding... They should just put it on the Workshop and allow for custom maps and such, that will make it a big hit on PC.

The last major upgrade that I can think of was the "Lost Coast" level for HL2. Left for Dead 2 seemed pretty rough around the edges in terms of detail.
