Out of the Blue

I didn't realize the GRAMMYs were last night, as that's not something I keep up with. I'm happy to hear it though, as I managed to skip the awards along with the Pro Bowl, and there's nothing that helps make one feel more productive than doing two things at once. Or in this case, not doing. Multitasking for the win!

Multitasked Links: Thanks Ant and Acleacius.
Play: Idle Farmer.
Sheriff Lombardoo.
Link: Word games with the "make your own Coke label" promo.
Science: The Era Of Genetically-Altered Humans Could Begin This Year. Thanks HARDOCP.
Dogs Carry the Oldest Known Living Cancer.
Researchers detect cancer cells using olfactory senses of fruit flies.
Images: The Girlfriend Test. Thanks reddit.
That's one way to solve the overheating problem. Thanks reddit.
Media: Doug Stanhope On Lame Celebrities. NSFW.
It's So Damn Cute.
Follow-up: Rare NES cart auction ends at $100k, but winning bidder retracts offer.

Conan just presented on the Breakthrough Awards on the SciHD channel - used "begs the question" incorrectly in front of the smartest people on the planet......idiot.

Well, everyone makes mistakes. Comedians in general tend to be a pretty smart bunch.

Apparently complaining about anything that doesn't.

I don't know, maybe he takes part in fund raisers, volunteers, or nominates them for local media's community hero award. Or maybe he tries to sound good on Internet message boards.

Our local firemen are often spotted trying to horn in on EMS services so they can justify raises in their already absurd contracts. Volunteers I would celebrate, these guys I will not.

We get a lot of fires from the dry season. Firefighters are essential and save homes and lives. Celebrities .. meh.

Clearly you've never heard of HARRISON FORD!

Grumpy old man, possibly a pirate, and saver of lives!

I never watch award shows, I'd rather be watching the movies or playing games, activities for which I don't have enough time as it is. I suppose the awards are mildly useful as a list of movies that I can look into and see if they sound interesting. Usually though, I'm already aware of most of the good ones.

I don't care about music. Music is a very diverse field, and awards go to popular acts. Which makes sense, a band that sold 2,000 albums hasn't been heard by enough people to make a dent, but I have no clue who Imagine Dragons is and have no interest in finding out. I've heard them compared to Vampire Weekend, and having seen that band last week, I can say I have no interest in hearing more watered-down, kind of happy, dull adult music.

Movies are a bit different. They cost so much more to make that there's really only mainstream - even the small films are still mainstream. You have to be in order to open in theaters. So it's a smaller pool that anyone that watches movies has some kind of interest in. I won't watch the awards ceremonies, because they're usually the worst things to do at that time, but I'll read who won and be happy when an actor or actress I feel really killed it gets recognized.

Christ, looks at how many award shows there are for actors alone? Like they even need any to begin with. I'm with Blue. Judging anything artistic as a "winner" is ludicrous.

And holy shit, here comes Gattaca. Glad I won't be around for it.
