PopCap CEO Retiring

PopCap CEO Dave Roberts has announced his retirement after nine years with the EA-owned developer of Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, saying this will take effect on January 8th when PopCap cofounder John Vechey takes over the company. "We need to get back to the place where we used to be and not just in mobile," Vechey explains to GamesBeat. "PopCap’s mission right now is to create the greatest mobile game studio in the world, and we’re going to do that by only making games that are beloved by players. We’re focusing on our foundation in 2014 – talent, process, and most importantly, great products, around that mission."

It's really sad to see a sure thing like PopCap turned into a husk. Weird timed exclusivity crap with Microsoft, mobile focus, still no PC releases on the horizon and their release schedule is pretty poor.

Did Microsoft write this press release for them?

So I wasn't the only one that noticed that outright contradiction in 2 sentences? lol

Wait what? Says who? Everything I've seen is the complete opposite, including the class action lawsuits filed by employees for crap they've pulled with overtime.

I worked for EA for 2 years and it was terrible on the whole. Only good thing were the people there.

Now this just made me think about the old song, Pop Music.

I work at one of those type places as well. I can say it really used to be like that, but since 2008 and the constant chipping away it hasn't helped at all. However these survey's they send out that they say is anonymous but needs your EmpId to get into just can't be trusted and how things are worded, still shapes your answer towards being positive. Top management can still say "Great Place to Work!". However I do know of one person who worked at EA and loved it, all but the pay.

PopCap is mostly just a shell now. Almost all the creative force behind it left or was laid off soon after EA bought them. I feel sorry for the people left behind working for a zombie brand.

Zombie brand? Does this indicate EA is the plant in this game?

If we have to make EA a plant, it has to be the walnut - broken down and sad - and everyone wants it out of the way.

More like kudzu, constantly spreading, absorbing and destroying local fauna, itself uneradicable.

His requirement to stay with Popcap after EA bought them probably expired Dec. 31st so he is leaving now.

Whoo-hoo!

Considering he made out like a bandit, and he now has to work for EA, it's perfectly understandable.

I need to talk to my doctor (specialist) about it, he actually knows one of the Popcap owners.

EA is regularly lauded as one of the best places to work. So leaving isn't as understandable as it might be on its face. For the top people, who have lots of cash, though, I think it's a case of they want to have more control over what they do, which they don't have over at EA.

Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

Likely no requirement, likely just stock that vests. And I doubt it fully vested, it probably just wasn't enough to stick around.

Similarly 2 co-founders from Criterion have also left that company.

Sudden retirement (leaving in under a week) seems a little odd...
