Deadpool and Other Marvel Removals Confirmed

GameInformer has a follow-up to yesterday's news that the Deadpool game had disappeared from various online stores, confirming with Activision that the game's removal was intentional and permanent. The also confirm that several other games based on Marvel properties are no longer to be sold, suggesting that anyone who still wants any of them should grab up keys from wherever they can be found. The reasons for the removals are not revealed, though presumably licensing is involved, especially since this all happened at the stroke of the new year. Here's word on the other licensed games that have suddenly become scarce:
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, X-Men: The Official Game, X-Men Destiny, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine have now been removed from storefronts. If you have a desire for any of these games, it's recommended that you secure a retail copy as soon as possible. It's likely that no additional copies will be entering retail channels.

Does no one remember the incidents of Amazon removing books people purchased and downloaded to their Kindles?

I remember it happening twice, and in both instances it happened because Amazon discovered that the people selling the book actually had no right to sell the book to begin with.

So they removed it because they didn't want to be helping someone steal another's IP. In both cases, they refunded all the affected users.

I'm not sure why that's somehow some stark, bleak tale that needs to be brought up as a warning to society. In both cases, Amazon did the right thing.

It isn't similar to what this situation is (though there are enough posts implying as much), but people shouldn't be surprised at how things play out in an era where the copyright and patent systems, which were created to foster progress and protect culture for society in general, are used as weapons by corporations to exclude people from accessing the very culture they are supposed to have a right to.

And again, this is different because NO ONE had games removed from libraries.

There are still consumer protections in place on digital media.

Ten years ago, PC gamers scoffed at the idea of digital distribution and rejected the notion that physical would ever go away. Lo and behold, digital distribution now accounts for the vast majority of PC game sales.

Because a) PC games haven't had a retail presence in eons and b) there are a bunch of digital outlets. Who wants everything to be DLC when PSN and XBL and their shitty pricing are the only storefronts?

Like I said, console-makers need to provide incentives for consumers to switch over to digital. One of those incentives is lower prices like we see on PC. Steam has proven that great sales can significantly increase profits. There's no reason why console-makers can't convince publishers to do the same on their respective platforms. Publishers would love to go all-digital, as it would save them a ton of money on manufacturing and distribution, generate more profit per sale and create a potentially infinite shelf life for every game.

If console-makers put some effort into it, I wouldn't be surprised at all if consoles were all digital within ten years. We've already seen music go digital and movies and television are quickly following suit. The future will be all digital. It's only a matter of time.

Digital console sales are the lowest at only about 12%. More people (about 23%) still buy used. It's even lower in Europe. If you think 100% of games will be exclusively available through digital distribution in even the next ten years you are hopelessly misinformed.

Ten years ago, PC gamers scoffed at the idea of digital distribution and rejected the notion that physical would ever go away. Lo and behold, digital distribution now accounts for the vast majority of PC game sales.

If console-makers provide sufficient incentive for people to adopt digital over physical, the same transition will inevitably occur in the console market.

I wholly embraced digital distribution more than ten years ago to save PC gaming. That's really not a long time. Every PC developer was moving to consoles because that's where the big money was while the PC sections in stores are practically nonexistent. It's the same today and not changing anytime soon. Look up the statistics yourself. PC gaming and console gaming are very different animals. And only 12% of console games are purchased through digital distribution. PC games have been almost completely pushed out of the regular physical market. Console games still have a long way before digital overtakes them. The only thing that will push them out of stores is if people stop buying, and that doesn't appear to be happening.

The point is that yes, they can do that but to what end? I hope folks understand that the day Steam starts removing games from libraries with abandon is the day Valve destroys the very reputation is has as the premiere digital distrubtor, not just from consumers but from devs/publishers as well. Millions upon millions of dollars it would cost Valve. I do not think it would be in their best interest to screw over customers and in turn, the industry.

Dude. Stop saying stuff like that because then we'd have no grounds for fear mongering and conspiracy theories about controlling the entire digital distribution industry.

Where would we be then, huh? HUH?? Mad

You do realize that before long you won't be able to play any games at all if you insist on not buying via digital distribution, right? I can absolutely guarantee you that before the death of the PS4 and XBox One we will see the death of game discs sold at retail. Everything will be sold via Live or PSN for their respective consoles.

I'd take that bet.

There's way too many people with bad or no connections and far too many download caps out there for this to happen any time soon, not to mention the stake that retailers have in the business pretty much guarantees it won't happen within a few years.

Hell, I have a good connection and actually prefer buying digital and just plain can't because of the download caps my ISP institutes.

Ohhh conspiracy theory incoming - maybe that's why the game installs on XBone are reported as so long. Maybe they are getting people used to waiting a long time before they can start to play to prepare them for only being able to download games in the future.

Or maybe I'm talking shit and microsoft haven't made an accurate status bar in their history

Why? If you bought it before it was pulled you still own it and can still download it anytime. They're just not selling new copies. And this isn't just affecting Steam. It was pulled from every digital store for every platform.

Steam has the right to remove a game from your library at any time, it's stated in the terms. we're only renting out games. it's been discussed in Blue's News comments sections on many occasions.

no, not from the xbox online marketplace. only get physical. and on Steam only games I play are Valve ones (because i have to).

On a slightly related news, the Fallout Collection seems to be gone from Steam as well, or at least you are unable to buy Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics anymore.

The pages are still there for the games, you just can't buy them. Which is a change from most games that get pulled from Steam. The Publisher has also been changed to Bethesda. I'd bet the games will be available again once Bethesda makes the changes they need to make to the legal title screens.
