Guild Wars 2 MMO Migration Campaign

ArenaNet announces The Great MMO Migration, a campaign to poach players into Guild Wars 2, while leaving to the imagination the game they will be leaving for this migration. There are free copies of the free-to-play MMORPG to be won in a contest asking for videos pledging your commitment to playing, or a 40% discount on the game for those who are camera shy. Here's word:

NCSOFT and ArenaNet, developer of the acclaimed Guild Wars franchise, today announces the “Great MMO Migration” enticing new players to join the millions of gamers who’ve made Guild Wars 2 and its groundbreaking living world of Tyria; one of the most popular MMO games of all time. The program invites players to enter a video contest for a chance to win one of thousands of free copies of Guild Wars 2 being given away. Everyone in this exodus wins. NCSOFT and ArenaNet are also offering new players the biggest discount ever, with a chance to purchase the award-winning game at 40 percent off list price.

The miniature pet guy is the only thing worth having. The heroic edition comes with some armor (which my wife is using) that has a cool look for transmog-ing. Other wise it's all useless junk.

I've always wondered with GW2 - is there any actual value to the items you get in the collectors edition? Sounds like mostly it's stuff that's gone in a week/one time use?

GW2, love how they handled the open world. However despise the way they handled instance dungeons. If they would have had say 100 nice dungeons in that game, I would have found a good MMO. The search continues...

Another hate... too many currencies. You don't play for months and you enter the game... so confusing to me. So if someone asks about playing GW2 for the first time, I dunno. It was still a nice romp through their open world until max'd.

Until they bring back City of heroes, NC$oft will never get another second of my time.
Slow and steady might not win the race at first, until you shoot everyone ahead of you.

There's also Wildstar. It's similar to WoW but with more tactical combat. There's a decent amount of hype for it.

Tactical combat lol. I remember seeing a video how one of their super innovative things was a icon when a mob does a don't stand in fire attack. Hard time seeing the guy able to say that with a straight face.

All the pvp stuff aside. UO had the most indepth crafting system i've ever seen in a game. Nothing has come half as close. I have a lot of fond memories in UO, mostly doing bad stuff like breaking into peoples houses, clearing dungeons of players, destroying great lords with impunity, and generally griefing my teenage ass off, but what sticks out in my mind the most was the crafting system. I dont even like crafting in most games but in UO thats what i did when i wasnt doing the conan thing.

Yeah ESO is really the only thing I've seen people looking forward too. Aside from maybe Everquest Next, which won't be out for at least a year.

Ugh, it's so WoW in space it makes me yawn just looking at it. I was looking forward to it until I saw the game systems at work. The setting sound fun, but the gameplay is going to be SSDD.

I actually never pvp'd much in UO. I was more talking about crafting, community, housing, ship building, player stores, customizability, etc.

Haha, yeah, exactly. I've played and/or tested every MMO under the sun, including some smaller independent ones (even worked on a few in my day). Whenever a friend asks me about a given game I'm like...yeah, they have these features, as borrowed from UO. I remember some loving the houses in LOTRO, for example, or wanting better crafting. Then my friends in the ESO betas with me engage the guild-oriented stores, or the politics. I could go on and on with examples but the fact is, no game has even really improved on UO. Here we sit waiting for a "WoW killer" when we can't even get to terms with a game over fifteen years old.

Whenever I log into a MMO beta - and again, I play a lot, I see the same shit. People asking how to find something or do something, people WTS/WTB/WTT, people comparing it to WoW, people dueling outside places, etc. These are things that started in UO, not WoW. We need innovation...I can't stand seeing these same events play out over and over again amidst bored fanboys. I think GW2 had some great exploration ideas, I think LOTRO had nice music capabilities and housing, and I think some games had great world PVP. UO had all of these a decade and a half ago...

UO was all about the pvp. No pvp game has been as successful as everquest, let alone wow. Your statement doesn't add up. I do definitely see a vocal minority in every mmo thread that wants pvp in everything however.

Now is a great time to get into GW2. Servers are heavy with people, World vs World is awesome atm, the Fractals dungeon just got a big update and a bunch of new dungeons.. which is content you can enjoy from an early level and well past max level.

As to ESO, it is a hot topic atm and while I'm not one to break an NDA. I can say that being in early beta for ESO and early beta for GW2 the difference in quality, attention to detail and general 'care' the devs show for their games is lightyears away from each other. Early beta is early beta and I've seen MMOGs in the past turn a 180 between now and release but rarely have I played an MMOG in any stage of beta that was this rough.

Frankly though I'm so happy with GW2 that I am not really looking forward to any other MMOGs. It's the first MMOG since Star Wars Galaxies (pre-NGE) where I'm not constantly jumping from new MMO to new MMO. Such a nice feeling to find a home.

I fall in the camp of players NCSoft won't ever be able to poach. As a fan of City of Heroes I was aghast when they shut off a profitable franchise simply to re-purpose servers for GW2. If they treated fans and customers that poorly once to cut corners they'll do it again.

So no thanks NCSoft. You can't poach an egg you already fried.

I think TC is full? I was headhunting that server a few months ago - it never went down from "full" no matter what time of day I tried.

Yeah. I had to wait till about 3-4am PST nearly a year ago to make it my home server. I think it's still possible.

I do find it ironic that the very first major MMO release had the most robust feature set.
