Out of the Blue

As I already mentioned, my darling Hudson the wonder dog died in the wee hours of yesterday morning. We found her in the morning as if she were asleep, so we'll take comfort that she went somewhat peacefully, and, very true to her terrier nature, on her own terms. It's still sinking in, since we had a full day with Grandma Belle's funeral, which was quite touching and lovely, so this has all been a bit of a whirlwind. Speaking of Belle, I mentioned how the ups and downs of Hudson's and Belle's conditions seemed to match each other until they recently took turns in different directions, but them passing three days apart shows they were pretty well in sync after all. I am beside myself with grief at the moment, but I want to thank you all for your kind sympathies, as they have been a genuine comfort, and leave me overjoyed that I got to share with all of you so much of what made my baby so special over the years.

I had a sick pet that died in my hands as she was slowly losing her life. I had her for 19 years. We were best friends. I was devasted for months. It's an extremely difficult grieving process. My prayers to you and your family,

Well, I was going to ask, but glad you mentioned Huddy was home, I was concearned how Gunnar would take it - but pets understand death to - so I am glad everyone was home so Gunnar could also understand the absence and grieve.

She probably went an hour or so before we woke up, so Gunnar got to experience it first. By the time we discovered her, he was no longer even paying attention to her corpse, he just concerned himself with comforting us, he knew already that even though her body was there, she was gone.

It's amazing how clearly he understands what happened, and I can see the wisdom of the advice to let them have this closure. He was previously more attached to Huddy than to either of us, to the extent that he was starting to get mopey because she was doing poorly. He's already back to his happy-go-luck self, whereas in the past, if Hudson left the house without him, he couldn't be distracted by anything but waiting for her until she returned, so if she had just gone off to the doctor's one day and never returned, we would have had a difficult situation with him.

We are here for you brother.

Thanks, it's a great comfort.

They are our children, they are our family, and they become a source of love and joy in our lives.

Long post short, I don't think there is another creature on the planet that gives as much love back as a dog.

I remember that feeling. There's no words to describe the emptiness.

I also have a friend who just put both her dogs down about a month ago.

Sorry to hear that Blue. If there's one thing I could bet on, it's that Hudson the Wonder Dog would frequently feature in your OotB posts. I hope your household can find comfort in this trying time.
