John Carmack Leaves id Software

John Carmack has parted ways with id Software, a move that was once inconceivable when he was part owner of the Mesquite-based developer, but had become possible when Bethesda Softworks parent Zenimax bought id in 2009, and perhaps inevitable when Carmack joined Oculus Rift over the summer. John's twitter feed has his comment (thanks Paul): "I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging." IGN has id's statement: "John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," id's studio director Tim Willits told IGN. "Johnís work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on idís tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well." John later tweeted once more about this: "If they don't want me to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, we'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days. :-)"

Would be cool if Romero and Carmack got back together. Just saying...

Sorry your rocket garbage wasted your fortune and BTW if anyone wanted 3d glasses we would ask.

No one asked for doom, quake, etc. and we got some awesome games. Why you so angry? Did he not hire you or something? Epic nerd rage.

That writing was on the wall this past summer when he joined Oculus Rift.

Still, that's just about the end of an era in gaming. It's a shame he went out with Megatexture, which, quite frankly, is just not very good technology.

If the reports that the rift has issues with how long you can wear it before getting a headache or really messing your vision up are true then they need all the help they can get to figure out these technical hurdles.

lol, that "rocket garbage" contributed to him leaving ID Software because there's more money there than in games now.

I give John Carmack lots of props for his historical legacy. His programming skill birthed and popularized first person shooters. I hope the best for him. His career has seemingly been all roses until the technical issues with RAGE. John's RAGE implementation of virtual texturing aka "megatexturing" doesn't run so well on AMD hardware and the PS3 and the close up texture quality was better in games years older. That to me is the ONLY black mark on Carmack's otherwise glorious record. I hope the best for him and that occulus rift kicks ass and once again Carmack will be on the forefront of cutting edge technology and hopefully will bring virtual gaming to the masses.

This is a huge blow to id and it may not be an exaggeration to say that id is now a shadow of its former self. Prove me wrong id!

Thank god that we dont have to listen to another minute of Carmacks garbage .... blab on and on and on about stuff he knows nothing about.

Yah thats right he stopped knowing about video graphics in 1998. After that the rest of the world focused on GAME MAKING. If that idiot Carmack wanted to work on video drivers and low level code he could have got a job at NVidia or ATI. Everyone else wrote code on top of the drivers and focused on CRAZY STUFF LIKE GAMEPLAY.....JOHN EVER HEAR OF GAME PLAY??

Thats stuff other then shooting monsters that pop out of corners....

That pretty much sums up why all we got from ID after 2000 was garbage.

Last decent game id made was Quake. Sorry Carmack John Romero needs to make you his bitch.

Its game over...you should have listened to Paul Steed and the multiplayer game community after Quake 2. Sorry your rocket garbage wasted your fortune and BTW if anyone wanted 3d glasses we would ask.

I always felt that John made great technology for a very average game company. Imagine if John worked for Valve or Blizzard 15 years ago, the world would have been a better place.

What in the hell are you even talking about? DOOM? Quake? Hello?!? All possible because John Carmack formed iD Software!!! The world *IS* a better place because of what he did in pushing FPS gaming back in the early 90's to what it's become today.

Sad to hear this. As a genius game programmer, he no doubt will easily further his talents elsewhere.

Wow, that old design is so much easier to read... lol.

Check out the Hexen 2 screens!

Anyway, here's a salute to John Carmack for the huge positive impact he had on us all while at id, and to Blue for keeping us in the know all those years ago.

Ignorant troll comment.

He is/was an incredible technologist, not a game designer.

That is a knee-jerk ignorant comment. John Carmack essentially pioneered 3D/FPS gaming as we know it today, and was very adamant about sharing his code/technology for everyone to build uponÖand wow, look where FPS gaming is today. So, show some respect!

Iím excited to see his work and influence with Oculus Rift.
