Path of Exile Launch This Week

The Path of Exile forums have the announcement that Grinding Gear Games' action/RPG will officially launch on October 23rd, drawing the game's extended beta test to a conclusion (thanks Batman). Here's word:

Path of Exile is being released at 10am Pacific Time on October 23 (this is 6am NZ time on October 24). It's available on our existing website and also through Steam (which connects to the same game servers). This article discusses a broad overview of the new content and major new features in Path of Exile 1.0.0. We'll be presenting more detail on each section as well as more specific game balance changes over the next couple of weeks.

That being said, the best parts of the game for me seem to be between levels 25 and 50. Anything lower than 25 you feel rather limited and gimpy. Anything over 50, and its just a lot of redundant gameplay due to how quickly diminishing returns and grind sets it.

The real problem is the combat is just too simple and a huge swath of the classes all play the exact same way. Diablo 1 + 2 was going in interesting directions with the combat. Too bad diablo 3 and other clones haven't yet got the combat right.

Path of exile would be a good diablo clone if... the item system and economy wasn't so fucked. The barter system is really fubar and so much shit you find you just leave on the ground instead of selling... like wtf. The cost to identify items is astronomical.

This game is alright, I don't know. There are times I'm really into it and times that I loathe it. They still haven't fixed the games numerous desync problems which makes playing hardcore pointless. Act 1 is still a boring slog that is a really poor intro to the game. The animations still need work. They still have not improved the display of the passive tree which is really dumb.

On the flipside its nice to make complex and unique builds due to the well executed interaction between skill gems, items and passive tree.

Not sure how long ago you played Verno but its pretty smooth lately performance wise (atleast for me). I play hardcore leagues exlusively and i can remember desync'ing once a few months ago for a split second and then hundreds of hours of gameplay since very smooth and stable gameplay. Recently they trimmed down the textures and gamesize as well. Although with the new content maybe that'll go back up.

This game is like an adrenalin rush for me. Its happens in quick, exciting waves, and then quickly dies off.

I dont mind the graphics, especially since they fixed the flickering shadows, and the skill tree is pure innovation.

That being said, the best parts of the game for me seem to be between levels 25 and 50. Anything lower than 25 you feel rather limited and gimpy. Anything over 50, and its just a lot of redundant gameplay due to how quickly diminishing returns and grind sets it.

Also, despite having the huge passive tree, and tons of skill gems, I still seem to end up pushing fewer buttons in this game than even in diablo 3. Its like people focus on one main attack skills, 1 backup, and then some utility. It just makes for stale gameplay after you reach higher levels. Its almost like the amazing skill tree is just TOO passive.

Lastly, finding loot in this game just isnt fun. I love the barter system, which makes trading more fun, but actually finding the loot yourself, for me, is just dull. Maybe its because loot all around, is boring in this game. It looks ugly, and the item mods are not at all exciting.

But thats just my opinion. Not everyone will share it, and the game is free which is a huge plus to those who wish to come and go as they please.

And if not true, we just uncorked a trolling D3 fan boy.

I had some fun with this, must have been one of the longest beta's ever. Sort of funny they release a huge patch the day of release... you would think they'd want to beta that for some time, so much for being tested completely as certainly this will introduce some bugs. LOL

I played it for a month or two this summer. It was enjoyable enough that I purchased some additional stash space just to reward them. Not sure I'll pick it up again after release though..

Yeah the currency system is a curious one but I think it works really well. It's definitely easy to burn through your currency with a few bad rolls and we've all been burned by RNG somewhere along the line, but the strong currency sinks have done a good job to stabilise the trade value of the various orbs over time.

I'm not sure about the sinks you talk about. I wrote a feedback thread which spelled it out for them. Fuse orbs always add a link(never remove one), color orbs(forget the name) change the color of the clicked socket in logical order etc. etc.. They can fail with maybe a skill to increase effectiveness(crafting). I can't craft until end game because I level to fast and even then I've blow through like 50 fuse trying to make a 6 link... posted in chat about it and everyone started laughing, told me to quit playing :s

Hahahha, you better quit playing son cos thats not how it works...

First time i tried this game i didnt like it at all, but then again i think i only gave it about an hour. I picked it up again a few months later and i'm really really glad i did. This game is really amazing. Its currency system is well thought out and works as intended (the earlier poster is just all kinds of wrong talking about fusings and chromatic orbs etc). This game is as close to diablo2 as we'll ever get. So if you were a d2 junky as i'm sure many of you were, then i really recommend spending a few hours in this one and learn some of its systems as it really reinvents so many aspects of the genre.

As for the release patch, its going to be huge. Completion of 3rd Act (with 5 planned), New class, lots new skills, new passive nodes & rebalancing, PvP, PvP Capture the flag! Lots of new races as well. Thats what this game is really about, is creating a new charactor and a new build and trying it out in one of the races. That really captures what d2 was all about.

Also if your not playing in one of the hardcore leagues, your doing it wrong!

Clusterfuck how, exactly? I haven't played in a while, but the beta was shaping up pretty nicely. Really just needed more content, which they seem to have added.

I agree, I've been playing it the past two weeks and its so much different then it was a year ago. As for the money. I see nothing that prevents anyone from playing this game from start to finish without spending one dime.

The only thing I see that may kill this game is that the devs allowed the player to go up to level 99. I'm not sure how much life you can get out of this game after leveling that far without any add-ons coming out. I would have thought the smart move here would be to limit the leveling up to around 70 then bring out add-ons giving players the ability to level up 10 more level per add-on.

You're not going to reach the max level (100) unless you spend months on-end grinding for extremely small amounts of XP. There are diminishing returns at the high end that make maxing out your character very difficult for everyone and only achievable by the most dedicated (and masochistic) of players. This is why just about every build you see online plans out to only level 80-85, because that is what is feasible to attain with what content is currently available. And even that is based upon an end-game, following completion of all story-related content through several difficulty levels, wherein you farm randomly-generated dungeons starting at around 70-75. I hear only a handful of people have reached 100 since the start of open beta, literally only 4 or 5, when they have several million registered accounts.

The replayability from this game comes with trying out the other classes, as well as building out each class in different ways. They're going to keep adding content on a consistent basis (small updates every two weeks with larger expansions every few months), so that should be more than enough to keep any ARPG fan satisfied (all completely FREE, no less). If your sole purpose in playing this game, is to reach the level cap with one character... Good luck, lol.
I never have had much interest in getting anywhere near level cap. I find some new interesting build to play by the time I hit around 60 usually It does get pretty grindy going forward from there, and I don't have the patience for it, and haven't been interested in multiboxing for farming decent gear.

I'm looking forward to the additional content coming up as well. Lots to keep busy with for a while in this game.
