Out of the Blue

Today is a key day in determining the fate of Hudson the wonder dog, as she has an appointment for some follow-up testing with a cardiologist. This will result in a clearer understanding of her condition and how it is responding to medication, which directly relates to how much time she has left. I have mixed feelings about burdening anyone else with this, but so many of you have expressed concern about her condition in a way that makes you seem like family that I feel compelled to keep you in the loop, and am not above requesting you try to send out a little good juju for my baby.

Do you remember when it was mentioned on BN? I'd love to reread that again!

First mention of her coming to live with us:

First mention of her by name:

Wow, almost 13 years! Ha, I see I was submitting links back then too. I wonder when I started that on BN.

She had a severe reaction to the antibiotic, and began throwing up and having diarrhea.

Just a reaction to medication, definitely did the right thing Blue. Glad to hear Hudson came through all right, especially at that age. That's one tough doggie.

Glad to read the update Blue. It seems to me that you're being as thoughtful and realistic about all this as is humanly possible. Best of luck to you, Hudson, and your whole family.

Good news sir. Things progressed naturally and you handled it just fine. Nothing drastic and as he progressed you made more decisions. Glad everyone is home and better.

That's very good to hear Blue.

Yosemite Sam, I must admit I missed your comment about Blue being the only person here to make this determination. Sorry about that. I can understand your reluctance to bring it up but it's a fair point.

My cat likes hugs and some times walks up to me, stands up and sort of hugs my leg. He's not looking for food or anything, he's just being affectionate. You can look at it as a selfish attempt to get attention but you can break any action by any animal (especially including us) down to ultimately selfish reasons.

Good to hear, Blue.

And nin, why hug your cats? They'll just give you a blank look, or maybe scratch you. Cats iz not dogs!

And yeah, wish we treated people the same way. The 'life at any cost' assholes are so selfish and cruel not to allow people to escape suffering the same way animals are afforded it. Even in nature, if a predator doesn't get them there comes a point where that animal just lays down and doesn't get up again. If I'm wasting away, suffering in pain, be a guy and help put me out of my misery. Whose life is it anyway?

Hudson is home and doing much better at the moment. I'll provide more details on her future, but right now let me address the one that's come up about her present.

Yosemite Sam wrote on Oct 21, 2013, 18:03:
Hence my reluctance to say anything... and I'm not really judging Blue in my comment, as I said only he has all the information. It's just that in my lifetime I've seen too many people put their pets through living hell and hold out until the bitter end simply because they can't let go.

If I've made some social faux pas I apologize, and Blue can delete my post. I will take no umbrage if you do so.

Not at all, I understand your concern. I have not posted all the details of how all this has gone down, so let give a chronology that can help you decide if you would handle this differently.

  • Hudson went in for a routine checkup 5 weeks ago, and was prescribed an antibiotic for a hot spot from her allergies. She was otherwise fine, and the heart murmur she's had for years was unchanged.

  • She had a severe reaction to the antibiotic, and began throwing up and having diarrhea.

  • The vet advised us to take her off the antibiotic, and the vomiting ceased, but by then she stopped eating.

  • After almost two weeks of barely eating her weight loss became alarming, and I got her back into the vet's last week thinking she was through, and I was going to send her off.

  • The doctor determined her heart was working out of kilter, and while the prognosis for treating a dog with such problems after a history of heart issues is that she probably doesn't have a year left, a good quality of life could be restored by medication. She's 13+ years old, so we weren't sure she'd have another year anyway.

  • She saw the vet on Friday and was doing better, I had gotten her to start eating again and the doctor adjusted her medication.

  • Sunday evening she had several incidents where she had episodes of distress, which where hard to pin down to breathing or digestion or what.

  • She was scheduled for tests today with the cardiologist, and had an episode as he saw her, and he aspirated fluid from her lungs and put her on some diuretics, as it was due to fluid in her chest cavity, which is common in these cases.

  • She's home now resting comfortably, eating solid food, and peeing like a racehorse.

  • I don't know where along the way there I should have acted differently, with the exception of possibly taking her to a pet emergency room Sunday night.

I'll add there is only one time in her adult life that Hudson has resisted getting in the car, and that was for the trip where I thought we would decide to put her down. Earlier that day I thought she was saying she wanted it to end, but everything else she has shown me since has been that she's not ready to go at all. We know she's a stubborn Terrier, so we won't wait until she surrenders, but she seems very happy to fight this for now, and is certainly pleased be home and comfortable at the moment.

We'll gladly take whatever time she has left to give, but are determined not to make her soldier on when she's done. She's deserves better than that.

It's a bizarre feeling to have been a (mostly lurking) member of a community so long you actually remember when Hudson first arrived. Happy

Srsly Blue, we've seen a lot of personal news over the years and I think that's one of the things that keep me coming back, you actually respect your readers enough that you do share with us. Never feel like you can't.

With that in mind, all the best for Hudson. We'll all be here no matter what happens.

Sorry to hear about Hudson Blue... I wanted to reach through the screen and smack you up the side of the head when I read that post a few days ago, but I held my tongue. I'll put this as delicately as possible, are you doing what you're doing for your benefit or Hudsons?

I was in that position myself a few years ago. My dog had acute renal failure. I did what I could, even making her home cooked meals for such a problem which bought her another six months more then the vet thought I would get... but when she was no longer getting out of bed and had stopped eating for almost a week IE starving to death, I bit the bullet and had her put down. It was one of the saddest things I've ever had to do, but it was time, the dog was only suffering at that point.

Obviously only you can make that determination as you are the one who is there. I just hope that in your decision making the first and foremost and only consideration is what is best for the dog.
