Thief Gameplay Trailer

Here is the first gameplay trailer from Thief, Eidos Montreal's upcoming return to the first-person sneaker series. The clip is narrated by stealthy master thief Garrett, who says, "I've been away, but I couldn't tell you where." Here's the description: "In this gameplay trailer, get your first in-game look at Garrett's hideout, the dark alleys of the City, and your old friend Basso. See all the pillars of Thief gameplay in action - Infiltration, Theft and Escape - as Garrett enters the Baron's manor, grabs the shinies and leaves without a trace."

As far as I know Garrett doesn't have supernatural powers in this THIEF either.

Tis' true sir, Garrett has no powers. The various potions give him certain abilities, speed, slow-fall, invisibility, health and also his mechanical eye in T2.

I'm not saying there was nothing supernatural in the Thief universe. On the contrary. Garrett himself just didn't and still doesn't have any intrinsic supernatural powers.

As far as I know Garrett doesn't have supernatural powers in this THIEF either. That horrible smokey vignette is a "in shadows" indicator and the slo-mo is an adrenaline rush / focus ability. The latter you shouldn't worry about because any sane person would play on "classic mode" difficulty, which removes that ability and the game is even balanced for this mode. So the focus ability is a fallback for the new kids.

Not sure if you played the later thief games, but as the series went on there was more and more occult stuff going on.

I have played all Thief games. I'm talking about the supernatural powers of Garrett.

where did you see supernatural powers? i didn't see any magic in this clip. a few poofy stealing effects, but nothing i would call magical. funny considering how a previous poster was complaining about how this wasnt supernatural and mystical like the original.
The black smoke and the slow motion and change in graphics filter, those are the supernatural powers. You can also view other trailers, gameplay trailers from E3 that show continuous gameplay and you shall see the supernatural powers.

Oh my god this is bad.

If you want to do Dishonored then don't use an IP which dictates a different way of gameplay.

You can't change this much stuff and hope to get away with it.
Although I'm afraid they will get away with it, since everyone who remember Thief 1 & 2 are old and will die soon and won't complain...

This all looks like too much flair, scripted "awesome segments", handholding and forced gameplay.

Just present a problem with some tools and let the player figure out how to overcome it. I'd buy the shit out of a game like that.

Free jumping is immersion breaking but popup text that says 'We allow you to jump here' is not? What planet are you from? Seems to sum up the design decisions.

Hahaha, that's definitely one of the bigger loads of shit I've read lately. Basically we were too lazy in level design and jumping would let the player break the shit out of our game, sorry!

Exactly, you two. I can't believe there would be a single person in the whole wide world that would buy that airstrike of bullshit.

The video was awesome (The new Garrett isn't THAT bad...) . What has me worried is that interview I read this morning.

can you say what you found was awesome by the vid? didn't look so great to me... at least it didn't look like the good 'ol Thief from back in the day.

Well as much as I love Thief and Thief 2 (even Thief 3 to a lesser extent) I'm okay with it not being exactly in the same vein. The huge dark city, the stealthy stealing of stuff that I find so goddammed addictive, and the overall mood look incredible. He is seen doing classic 'Thief' moves like using water arrows and such, so that was cool. It obviously doesn't guarantee a good game, but it was a very good trailer I thought.

I agree Prez, I think sometime people just get too caught up with wanting the game to be an exact copy of what the original was years ago. I personally didn’t like Thief 2 as much as I liked the first one. I really loved going underground and fighting the undead and the wisp. That part of the game to me was a lot of fun.

I remember though that many people didn’t like there being undead and complained about it which is why in part 2 you saw none of that. Probably another reason why I didn’t like part 2 as much.

Still looking forward to part 3, hopefully it’s still fun to roam around in the shadows.

Gonna wait until I've heard more on this one. The troubled development cycle bothers me because usually games with those kinds of shake ups turn out a bit schizophrenic.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I thought Deus Ex:HR was outstanding & I thought this was the same team doing this game, I guess i was wrong?

It's not by the same team... this was being worked on in parallel together with Deus Ex by a different team and had a troubled development with many delays. It was rebooted a bunch of times due to "quality" reasons and people left because they didn't like management or where the game was heading. It's definitely not going to be a spectacular game, that's for sure...

Yep. Based on the video alone (which in fairness to Horrorscope is the only thing referenced in this thread headline) this would have shot up straight to the top of my wishlist. That's a win for marketting I guess. It's the hands on preview that is going around that has us all worried. It tells a very different (perhaps "truer") story of the game. Still, I was certain the XCOM reboot was going to suck balls based on previews and I ended up loving it so anything can happen.

To me a lot of people want to rush to judgement on this game. To me it looked good, just as long at the main mission is still that same atmosphere, modern engine will be nice and if there are some scripted events, that they don't take away from the main game-play and at worse don't add much... I'm ok. There are somethings going on there that the original would of been better off having. I liked all 3 so far, believe it got better as it went along, we'll see if this is all that. Totally don't see the horribleness. Half way through 2 again now... we'll get to the Dark Mod once through all three again. Also played that other one that came out years ago that had MP, that was very good as well. The slowed down sneaking atmosphere is just aces.
