Chris Taylor Hints a Return to Total Annihilation

PC Gamer has extracted some quotes from Chris Taylor on the CnC-Inside.de podcast where he answers questions about the RTS properties originated by Gas Powered Games now that the studio is owned by Wargaming. He explains that the Supreme Commander series is the property of Square Enix before throwing out strong hints that they may be pursuing a new installment in the Total Annihilation series. Here's word:

“In so far as other RTS properties that I am capable of working on – and I think you know what I’m talking about, I don’t even need to be coy – I think that nerd is alive and well.” Remember, the nerd in question is a metaphor for Taylor’s love of deep, complex strategy systems. Add that to the phrases “RTS properties”, “I am capable of working on” and “I think you know what I’m talking about”, and I think we know what he’s talking about.

(A hint: he’s talking about a follow up to Total Annihilation.)

Of course, this isn’t an announcement by any means. In fact, when pressed for confirmation later in the interview, he returned to maximum coyness. “I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t. It’s just not an area I’m ready to talk about yet. But you can use your imagination, even though you’re not on the project. You’re welcome to use your imagination, your imagination will serve you well in this case.”

Definitely more units. I'm still running up against the "Unit Limit Reached!" crap in SupCom and FA as I'm replaying it, and it's fucking annoying.

LET ME BUILD 500 FATBOYS DAMMIT!

There's a mod to let you use mods (if you follow) in the main campaign so it's almost certain you can already do this with a little research
I've played the whole SP campaign of FA with BlackOps Unleashed enabled (it was a riot). I can't search for you due to filters here at work sorry

In SC / FA the limit is settable in the skirmish settings. You should be able to bump it up to 1000 at least.

The sequel to TA was Sup Commander IMO. I'm not sure how you can actually get more 'TA sqeuely' than that. Stinks of someone grasping for original ideas.

Sup Com came out 8 years after TA. TA2 will come out 8 years after Sup Com. It's not like we're talking CoD here.

Sup Com had massive improvements over TA. Why wouldn't TA2 have further improvements? There's lots of things I'd like to see improved over Sup Com:
- Add unit physics so that certain weapon knock down/scatter units
- Add deformable terrain so better defenses can be built
- Improved AI for better SP and pathfinding
- Better graphics, Sup Com looks like a tabletop game, not a massive sprawling battle.
- Easy moddability so that ambitious modders can create their own games.
- More units. Top tech units in Sup Com were actually somewhat limited.
And that's just off the top of my head...

You're basically completely correct, however PA doesn't have Jeremy Soule doing the musical score, and that is a fucking slap in the face to one of the best composers of the last hundred years.

I doubt they intended it as a slight to Soule, I think he's just way out of their Kickstarted budget.

Soule has done every single Total Annihilation and SupCom game save for SupCom 2, and we should all be happy he didn't touch SupCom 2 since it was such crap.

I want to be able to create my own soundtrack to PA. I'll just take music from TA and SupCom1 and replace all the crap with great stuff.

In 1997 was in the heart of hard-core gaming glory, and Total Annihilation was the hard core RTS gamer's dream. It was the first work of man that made me feel compelled to meet the creator which I was fortunate enough to do.

A rebooted TA from Chris Taylor is one of the few things that might make me dust off my custom controllers.

"Custom controllers?" Do tell.

Also no love for Earth 2150?

Blech! 2150 must have been one of the ugliest RTS's I've ever seen! Now 2160 wasn't too bad, I actually bought that one. Apparently, though, it's somewhat different from it's older siblings. I never really had any interest in playing the other Earth-series games because looking at them for any length of time caused my eyes to bleed...

He is 2 years too late for the party. Planetary Annihilation is where it's at now. Shooting stuff on planets? How quaint... we now shoot asteroids at planets.

I still can't believe how badly Square Enix fucked up Sup Com 2

Heh. Still, PA coming out this year. TA 2 won't come out until 2015 at the earliest. By then we'll be hankering for something new.

True enough, but how much "new" can he do that isn't done by PA? Just figure that by 2015 we'll have much cooler toys to play with than PA or TA 2

Personally, I am hoping the Oculus Rift is going to be what I hope it to be. Because a good full immersive VR device that is not just gimicky because of technical failings could revolutionize gaming immersion on a level that is simply beyond our imagination right now. But when you experienced that immersion, can you go back to playing normal games? Or will it be boring? ^^

You can get a new copy from gog.com for a couple of bucks, runs on windows 7 too.

Oh, that's a good idea. I've no idea where to find it. It would be cheaper time wise to just buy that and start playing...

My favorite RTS ever, lets hope its true. Its gonna need another epic music score as well, viva ARM vs CORE!

He uses TA composer Jeremy Soule for all his games, I don't see how he'd not get an another awesome score from him for this.

If i recall correctly, didn't they use like the Israeli Philharmonic to perform as well? Added a nice touch of class.

I don't know who they used, but yeah, half of the score was full orchestra.

Also, this quote is very heartening:

“It’s (Sup Com) Square Enix’s property, so they’ll have to decide if that nerd comes back to life,” Taylor continues. “In so far as other RTS properties that I am capable of working on – and I think you know what I’m talking about, I don’t even need to be coy – I think that nerd is alive and well.”

I read that as him saying, "Sup Com is owned by Square Enix, so it's up to them what they do with that. I've got this other IP (hint, hint) and I'm going to make a proper sequel with it, none of this console crap."

The four best RTSs are, in order:

1. Sacrifice
2. Total Annihilation
3. Dungeon Keeper
4. Warcraft

The first two never had sequels, and I never understood why.

Supreme Commander with Forged Alliance is the sequel to TA in all but name. Sup Com 2 is a very different game.

I've got my Sacrifice disk somewhere, I've got to dig that out...

Also no love for Earth 2150?
