X Rebirth Trading Trailer

A new trailer is now available from X Rebirth, the upcoming installment in EGOSOFT's X series of space simulation games. The clip shows how trading and mining work in the game's complex economy. The clip includes developer commentary, explaining the difference between simple item trading and the more complex trade and transport of large quantities of goods, which is a separate game system. This is also accompanied by this text primer on the topic:

Sharon, MA, September 26, 2013 - All X games have been created to provide players an open sandbox experience with multiple levels of gameplay elements. Among the most significant is a fully simulated and realistic economy. X Rebirth takes advantage of the wealth of experience derived from the prior X games to create a trading experience that is completely immersive. Today we are pleased to present a trade video that delves into some of the trading, building and resource management aspects players can expect from the X Rebirth economy.

Like any economy, supply, demand and animal spirits are the main drivers. In the trade world of X Rebirth, countless variables impact each of these factors. Prices and the economy can and will be influenced by pirates, warring factions disrupting supply routes, broken station power units, shot-down freighters, good relations with merchants, and the list goes on... For example, if a player directs his aggression at a freighter, he can be sure that his action will make prices rise or delay production elsewhere.

Upon first entering the X Rebirth universe, players will find the scale of their trading operations limited by their cargo hold. However, from the start the player will have a very impressive and easy to use personalized trade system. In time, and if the player chooses to take the path of building a major trading presence, the player’s trading activities will reflect the fleet of freighters acquired and the stations and factories built. Even those players who prefer to immerse themselves primarily in action-laden space battles will find that their actions influence the economy.

It bears noting that utilizing the streamlined trade management system allows the player to direct freighters to collect or sell goods, and stations and manufacturing facilities to manage resources and production. The ships and facilities will then perform their missions and tasks autonomously, while the player can attend to other tasks such as finding new resources and trading opportunities.

Finding new resources is among the more important elements in a player’s economic gameplay and this is also explored in today's video. Mining is facilitated by special drones which are designed to analyze and exploit asteroids.

Gave up on pre-ordering things, which has helped me avoid a few tempting stinkers. But it would have been difficult to stay on the wagon if I'd noticed that green man sale in time. Oh well.

So, being totally new to this franchise, I have questions. Can you fly to and land on the near by planets seen in the video, or is it strictly flying around in space to different stations? May be a dumb question, but IDFK.

Nope, you can walk around on the stations as shown in the video - which is new to the series, but no landing on planets.

Cool, thank you much.

Just one thing I noticed when watching the trailer...Is anyone else bothered about the way the ship moves in the game? Feels very, very stiff and not at all realistic. Arent there supposed to be Newtonian mechanics involved?

There are no newtonian physics in X. As for the stiffness, most of that can be attributed to the fact that Bernd is using the strafe option to move around. Your ship in X has thrusters that allow it to strafe in all three axis, and it's the easiest way to move when you're around space stations.

The flight itself is smooth and does feel like you can "powerslide" a bit, but there is no Newtonian stuff in there. Few, if any, of the X fans want it.

As far as I know no X game used inertia.

Looking forward to this. I will NOT preorder because of a few caveats. The X games are always buggy as hell on release, and I skipped the last one because of the attrocious space combat. I hope that they fix that and that they will give us a meaningful story to go with the sandbox experience, because buying the biggest ship in the galaxy and not being able to fly it isnt much of a draw.

I used to think the X series had huge learning curves, until I started simming with DCS.

X newbie here and it looks like I'm taking the leap with Rebirth too. I have a copy of Terran Conflict I picked up somewhere (Steam sale binge? Humble Bundle?) that I think I'll install as a preview.

Damn space sims, between you and Star Citizen you're really putting a dent in my wallet this year.

@ Wolfox and dj LiTh: Thank you for the feedback. I may just have to pull the trigger on this one, so to speak, and give it a whirl.

Got it preordered from GMG.
Too good of a deal to pass it up, and the game looks like it will be a ton of fun.

Personally I like researching stuff online - yes there is very little hand holding in-game. But I'm a big boy, I always figure it out or google it.

OFC space games can feel repetitive - so do JRPGs. But they exist to provide an experience. The longest mainstream game recently was Skyrim - which for me had very little plot, no characters and hugely repetitive game play (go dungeon, clear dungeon, go back to quest giver).

The X games are the thinking man's sandbox - except thanks to the difficulty curve they are more like the ultimate broken glassbox.

Preordered

But then either they spend less time on other parts of the game, or throw more people at it which can cause more problems.

That's fair - at least as far as pre-release development goes.

Post-release however, I'd gladly pay money for an addon that enables multiplayer (when they have the resources to do it properly).

The community around x-games will never allow MP to become a feature or even a consideration, X games are SP Sandboxes, and they are bought for that quality! So it's a futile hope And I am tending to agree with that community, as to me a good SP game needs to be good in SP first and foremost. I have still massive doubts Star Citizens is gonna be so great as we have a lot of promises so far but 0 Information on how exactly SP will work.

And it always makes me doubtful when a game gets a LOT of coverage for it's MP but 0 coverage for it's SP. It usually means SP is gonna suck. And nothing ruins a game's SP more fundamentally than badly implemented COOP.

My main problem with the X games isn't how hard it is, is how to learn the mechanics. There is literally NOTHING in-game explaining how to set up production chains. You have to look outside the game, or waste a gigantic amount of time learning it by yourself (btw that's the way I did, back in X BTF, and, well, to be honest, was kinda fun. Except for the part where I had my rented mammoth carrying one of my fabs explode while hitting one of the gates)

I've played most of the X games over the years and one thing they all seem to have in common is major bugs on release, needing a good 3 months or so of patching to work them out. Considering this a major rework of the past games, I would expect it to be especially true of this one.

While I'm as excited as the rest for it, I won't be pre-ordering and will wait for them to work out the inevitable kinks first.

I don't always drink carbonated Mexican rat piss, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

I'm never played any of theses "X" games before, is this an MMO?

Single player sandbox space sim with one of the most advanced economies in a game. Also heavily supported by community mods. It has a pretty high learning curve though, especially with some of the mods that are almost essential IMO. X Rebirth supposedly helping with the learning curve though, but thats never been a problem for me.

I think the community is worried about it being watered down by multiplayer - it's a big game and Egosoft's attention is needed in many places. Going by their previous games, the last thing they need is even more scope and while some sort of multiplayer would be cool, I'm glad they're not stretching themselves any further.

It doesn't necessarily have to be watered down though - just give us the same experience we already have, but with the ability to do it with a friend co-operatively. I know a couple of people where that would make this an instant sale.

Instead, they'll end up waiting for Star Citizen.

I'd be very very surprised if Star Citizens economy is even half as good as past x series games.
